100 Elminster of Shadowdale (Com. 5)
49 Warpriest of Moradin (Com. 6)
42 Couatl (Com. 0)
143 Rikka, Angelic Avenger (Epic)
65 Aspect of Kord
56 Clay Golem
29 Voice of Battle
13 Aramil, Adventurer
497 points, 8 activations

Map: Field of Ruin

Summary: This band combines the Warpriest with the Voice of Battle, maximizing the potential of his morale save-inducing commander effect. The Clay Golem, Rikka, and Aspect serve as the beaters, with the golem doubling as a screener against spellcasters and beholders. Having two close wounds will hopefully add to the longevity of the beaters.

Question: Is this warband tough enough to stand up against other 500 point bands? What would you tweak or change (keeping the core Elminster/Warpriest/Voice of Battle or Warchanter concept intact) to make it even more effective? Would you recommend a different map?

I would ditch Rikka and the Clay Golem. This gives you 202 points to play with, including the original unspent points.

I'd take 169 of those and upgrade El to Epic El. The difference between non-Epic El and Epic El is, frankly, overwhelming. And even more frankly, you don't need traditional 'beatsticks' in a Warpriest/Voice of Battle band, since ideally you'll be setting up your band to provoke morale checks on any hit, regardless of how much damage it does.

Note also that the Warpriest's CFX doesn't specify how the damage is inflicted - spell damage will provoke morale checks as easily as melee damage. With an El leading the way, you may as well focus on spellcasting.

Also note that, against Beholders, the Clay Golem isn't going to be screening for the Aspect of Kord - the former is speed 4 and the latter is speed 10. That's just not happening. What you want to do against Beholders is put tough figures in their path and give your damage-dealers time to work their magic. I'd use the remaining 33 points to bring in a Celestial Pegasus - it has strong saves, DR, lots of HP, and against non-Beholder bands its Spell Resistance and energy resistances mean it doesn't have to fear all that much out there. And it's speed allows it to keep up with and screen for the Aspect of Kord, which is really the figure you want cavorting in the enemy backfield as rapidly as possible.

Then the question becomes, do you really need the Couatl anymore? Against Beholders, snake's swiftness is a crapshoot anyway. The Pegasus doesn't benefit all that much from the Couatl's CFX, though you probably won't be keeping them all that close together. I'd argue that what you really want is a figure who can continue to provoke morale checks against anemies without being in base contact, and who isn't worried about the Beholder Anti-Magic Eye.

In short, what you want is a Half-Elf Bow Initiate.

Here's how I see the band:

Epic Elminster of Shadowdale (269)
Aspect of Kord (65) 𖓆]
Warpriest of Moradin (49) 𖓷]
Half-Elf Bow Initiate (43) 𖔢]
Celestial Pegasus (32) 𖕂]
Voice of Battle (29) 𖕟]
Aramil, Adventurer (13) 𖕬]
500 points, 7 activations

Keys:

- Kord and El dish out the damage to anybody who doesn't get close to the Warpriest/Voice combo.
- Pegasus screens for Kord to let him get into the enemy backfield and wreak havoc.
- HEBI hangs back and plucks anybody who does get close to the Warpriest/Voice, as does Aramil with his magic missiles.
- Voice stays as close to the Warpriest as possible, to be sure that the Voice is the closest target for the Warpriest's close wounds spell.

I think it's a dangerous band, though I'm sure others will have different ideas. I'd certainly take this band up against the Golem/Rikka/Kord band previously described.
