Explain to me why this isn't stupid nomenclature? Isn't a Round also what people use to describe their various games in a tournament -- round 1, round 2, 4 rounds of swiss, etc? Furthermore, doesn't turn become redundant with activation? On Zombie's turn he moans is the same as on Zombie's activation he moans, except that activation is the terminology used on cards. What gives?

Why not:

Round = game in a tournament
Turn = one player's turn
Activation = 1 figure's activation

That is, tournaments have rounds, players have turns, and figures have activations. Butta-bing, butta-boom. Oh, and fewer people are shamed... or is that the point?

A journey of 1,000 miles starts with a good whooping.

Because the existing terminlogy makes a good amount of sense and has history behind it.

(If you had said "is ideal nomenclature" instead of "isn't stupid nomenclature," I might agree with you. But if you're calling it stupid, I refuse to agree with you.)

Yes, that's why I am also careful to use "swiss round" and "game round" to distinguish them when they're both being used at the same time. (This is also what the DDM floor rules does.) Sometimes, I say "match" instead of "swiss round," when the context allows it.

But that's irrelevant to the point of this thread. Folks don't make the round/turn mistake in relation to swiss rounds. They make the mistake in the context of game rounds.

Yes, mostly. Activations and turns are basically the same thing. This many not be true forever, though. Star Wars Minis (which is a very similar game, particularly in the terminology department) has some abilities that grant immediate turns to other characters; these turns are not activations for those characters. So a distinction between activations and turns may someday be important for DDM.

Because we are already entrenched. There are far too many cards with "turn" (including "its turn") and "activation" printed on them to change those definitions now.

Honestly, carrots work sometimes, sticks are great, but carrot and stick works best.

If an article/post is corrected within a day or two they should be removed. That may be too much work, but I think it is a good idea.

Really, it's not that bad. The 'shame' induced by Guy on this is mostly good-natured prodding and is starting to turn into a badge of honor. I am a founding member of his Hall of Shame on Wizard's Boards and I am not offended by it. I appreciate his desire to make sure we all use the same terminology and, as an author of DDM articles, it is especially important for me to avoid these mistakes.

Of course, Guy now gets an opportunity to look at my work before it's published now, so if I end up in the Hall of Shame again, I can just blame it on him. [:D]

So if I were to take my turn and use my first activation of the round to take a turn with my Cleric and activate the Cleric so that he turns around and activates a turn attempt against an undead (formerly) Dire Tern in the first round of the tournament, and I successfully make my turn roll, is the Tern still around?

And even more importantly, does this qualify for the Hall?

Actually, I think you take your phase, not your turn.

Because I am a just man, when I throw rocks at birds I leave no tern unstoned.

Add the DDM designers to the Hall of Shame!

From Guy's Clarifications for Blood War:

(10/26/2006) Harmonium Guard (Blood War: LG, 8/60): The Commander Effect should say "round" instead of "turn."

Somehow I don't feel so bad now...

A turn is a single creature's activation.

A round is where both players roll initiative and then alternate taking phases of two activations each. When all creatures have activated once, the round ends.
having played d&d for almost 20 years, trying to make my reflexes accept that a creature can AoO more than once a "round" is making my head hurt. ^^ i keep trying to use 'draw AoO' tactics and failing. =P
