Has any one seriously tried making use of any of the new activation special abilities?
Squad Activation
Mob 2
Horde
Specifically are any of these a strength? Or are they purely an activation penalty?
I can see a use for Karnathi Zombies as a mobile barrier, But I've yet to come up with a band that could really use this.
I can see a use for Axe Soldiers as an anti-basing unit for the Arcane Ballista, But doubt it's competitiveness.

I recently played this band for fun at our local game. It seemed to do ok despite the low activations. The threat of doing 100+ damage in a single activation gives people something to think about - especially since I'll almost always have the advantage in initiative.
Sand Giant - 79
Cleric of Dol Arrah - 45
Dwarf Wizard - 21
4x Axe Soldier - 52
Man at Arms - 3
Total: 5 activations, 200 points
Most people say activation control is best when they can move/attack at the end of one round, then win init and full attack on the next round to eliminate dangerous pieces before they have a chance to retaliate. With this band, I can output a similar amout of damage in just the first activation of a round.
In the games I played people predictably did the move/attack at the end of one round, then lost initiative and proceeded to have their beater killed before it could attack again (thanks to a failed save against Bigby's slapping hand).
I don't think this is a competitive band by any means, but it sure made some people think...

I hadn't thought of a pairing with Sandy.
Your thinking is what I'm verging on, I'm convinced there is something to this. Especially if it psychs out an opponent.
Excellent point on the conversion from one round to the next. If the traditional method for getting 3 consecutive attacks backfires and kills a prime beater this has potential for the slower squads.
I'm not sure I like the way that Close Order Fighter is worded on the card. It becomes difficult to get the effect on more than 1 unit unless you surround a med. unit with 4 Axes.
So far I've only used the Axes in pairs so as to get auto flanking bonuses. Your Sand Giant reduces the need for that.
These guys would have been devastating in the era of the LSD.
I'll keep playing around with it. Thanks for the input.
