I'm a fairly new player, skirmishing against other fairly new players. One of the guys has been running a Mounted Paladin/Cleric of Dol Arrah band that's just been giving me fits. Stupid 27AC versus evil figures. . .

I actually managed to beat it today with a Rakshasa, 2*Chraal, 2*Duergar Champion build, but only because I was able to corner the Paladin. What are the more effective ways of dealing with this piece (advice for any alignment welcome)?

Thanks much,

Dagonet

You should be able to crush a warband using the Mounted Paladin, as it is not tier 1. First off, it has smite evil, so we will take that away by playing a good warband. Next, it has very high AC so we must bypass this using magic or special abilities. Finally, for its high cost (amost half of a 200 point warband) it really does not have a lot of HP, but is fearless, so automatic damage every round is at a premium.

Drum roll please.....I present to you the Archmage (and his friend the Inspiring Marshal). With the Mounted Paladin's strengths and weaknesses, the Archmage is tailor-made to take it down. First, sit back and pepper your opponent's warband with empowered acid arrows and magic missiles. Your opponent will be forced to become aggressive with the MP. Once, the MP is exposed, try to cast both of your Mordenkainen's Swords on it, with the help of the GMA from the IM. Then, just tuck the AM behind the rest of your fighting units and "help" the MP die a little faster. If you can, use the map with the smoke stuff that obscures line of sight. You might be able to take advantage of a situation where the AM (with his blindsight) can hurt the MP behind the smoke, but the MP won't be able to benefit from its powerful charge.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

I utterly munched a Mounted Paladin (MP) warband using Couatl/Marut. I like to buff the Marut's AC and give him Magic Weapon so I usually include Eberk to handle both. At that point the MP is essentially always getting hit each round twice for total of 60 damage (Snake's Swiftness + normal attack). Paladin's hit points are too squishy to handle that punishment for long (not counting anything else I've got flanking with the Marut smacking the paladin around).

Mmmmm...tasty, tasty Paladins [:P]

Hmm. What can handle a Mounted Paladin, you wonder? I see several options within LG and to a lesser extent, CG. Some of them are even pretty affordable, money-wise. Assuming a 200/8 environment, LG can run the "GAS Band" (Young Master + some Githzerai Monks); AC 25 is meaningless to the Githmonks and their Auto-Crit ability. 3 of those will nearly kill it without the Young Master helping. 4 will. If the Young Master is present, 3 auto-crits will do it.

Marut + Couatl will usually succeed as well. A Marut alone has a chance of defeating the Paladin outright, though I admit the Paladin is more likely to win. Either way, the Paladin will either be dead or very hurt. From there if you can land a lucky hit with a Justice Archon (not entirely unreasonable; get a flank going and +12 will hit about 45% of the time) and finish it off right there.

CG can run lots of auto-damage, such as a trio of Wand Experts. This is decidedly not a Tier 1 solution (running multiple Wand Experts usually results in them being slaughtered by a more diverse band), but they WILL work against a Mounted Paladin that doesn't have a Couatl with him. At range they'll deal 30 Acid damage/round to him. If he gets close...one of them dies, but the remaining two deal 15 fire + 10 acid apiece, for 50 damage. Running triple Renegade Warlocks can work in similar fashion, but again isn't really a Tier 1 idea.

CG also has a few 'can-opener' units that'll have a realistic chance of hitting the Paladin. Rikka with a flank hits at +17 for 20 magic...that's significant. The Brass Samurai can contribute 10 fire auto-damage from its breath weapon, then with a flank swing at +15/+15/+10...pretty good odds of hitting AC 25. Frenzied Berserker and Aspect of Kord also bear consideration. Many of these pieces are considered smart calls for CG.

Aramil can help a little in LG or CG, since he'll drop the attack values to a more tolerable +17/+11 (I'm accounting for the Bless here) for 15 damage apiece. CG won't care about the negligble shift in hitrate, but the drop in damage is significant. LG will care since the +11 attack has about a 50-50 shot of missing most of their common ACs which tend to be in the high teens, low twenties range.

As for CE and LE, I have no idea. I don't play them much, so I'll leave someone else to offer LE/CE ideas.

The mounted paladin looks like a powerful creature but when you play him one or two times you soon realize that he,s overcosted and very, very weak. His high AC dont give him a life-insurance because there are a lot of creatures with a very high attacks that almost never miss an attack (marut,kord...).And he has so low HP that two or three hit obliterate him (for an eye or orc champion its easy to kill him a lot). His cost is very high for his power and his charging ability....well,I have to say I could never use it.How to defeat him?
Let me see....marut,kord,eye,champion,helmed,gauth,beholder,frenzied.
Yes,thats it.

In 200 constructed I agree that the MP is weak but in limited he nearly won the pre-release for me. Also if the players are fairly new to the game and have limited numbers of figures he can be deadly.

Try to not let the MP get any charges on you and if possible remove the Cleric early to eliminate the heals and AC Boost.

The Mounted Pally works better in Epic, where the maps are more open and he's not the primary hitter.

The thing I really want to try is a Couatl-Mephling Pyromancer-Mounted Paladin x2 build. The Mephling casts Fly on the two Paladins, and you suddenly have two flyers with Mounted Melee Attack.

Of course, that's 272 points right there, but it would really be fun.
