It'd be cool to field a necromancer (and it is for a fun theme band), but the one we have is weak. Necromancy and the undead as a subject/theme in a DnD game/campaign is so common that its perhaps reached cliche'ism (to make up a word).

in regards to the skirmish game can this guy be saved or do we need a replacement?

for me I think grim necro can be salvaged by implementing a viable 30ish fearless unit (hopefully undead) in the LE faction.

any thoughts?

Summoners won't be viable until they change the rules. A good necro would be a commander with a CFX something like the village priest: "+2 attack and speed for creatures with "skeleton" or "zombie" in their name". Then give it a couple of spells like stone bones or undead torch.

Stone Bones (target undead gains +3 AC)
Undead Torch (target undead gains +5 damage vs. living creatures.)

It's deja vu all over again.

The Grim Necromancer will probably never be competitive. However, some other commander of the undead could be.

the potential +6 for undead is pretty impressive...undead are just so unimpressive...and summoners are still totally screwed screwed screwed right now...with the move to 8 activations i don't see them changing the rule soon either...too bad...grim necro is close...cultist as well...evermeet is ok but too spendy...and that's the problem...costs points to give them summons and opponent gets more points for killing the summoner...is the grim necro worth 50+...hell no...hell no...and thats the number game...

Rock Bottom Pricing:
Arcane Archer 30, Centaur Hero 67, Human Cleric of Bane 25, Gold Champion 34, Death Knight 52, Goblin Blackblade 9, Silentwolf Goblin 7, Orc Raider 10, Dwarf axefighter 9, Healer 9, Thaskor 65, Aspect of Demogorgon 71, Ogre 9, Fire Giant 79, Human Wanderer 7, Drunken Master 18, Barghest 12, Longstider Barbarian 27, Longtooth Barbarian 22, Frost Giant 76, Ravenous Vampire 42, Large Earth Elemental: priceless

If the rules stay as they are then Grim Necro is dead.

I like the idea of summoning and think it could be advantageous but well its not worth the points to summon to give your opponent more victort points.

If you really want to add undead, minions are the way to go rather than summons. A necromancer version of Snig the Axe would be very cool.

It's deja vu all over again.

I think the grim necromancer is not a very good creature but I use him often as a second commander. His curse is very useful if you use chraal, helmed and duergars (large or champs) and his summon is his best card. His best summoning choice is clearly the minotaur skeleton+ zombie and you can summon acursed spitit instead. In my opinion you can empower your hitters with him and a minotaur is not a very bad creature at least.

Even compared to other summoners, Grim Necromancer is a very poor deal.
I occasionally try Dragon cultist or Druid of Obad Hai for activation control. And the Evermeet is well worth using in a 500 point game to transpose a storm giant.
The Grim Necromancer is inferior to all of 3 of them. Only 2 extra activations. And while it does have a good commander effect for undead. The best LE undead is Lord Soth, who is not "a follower".
Mina & the Human cleric of Bane are perhaps worse summoners (I have never seen either played)

Don't worry about the current metagame. It doesn't matter if it's ugly, bad, or the best ever. In 2 years time, set rotation will ban everything.

Mina is a really bad summoner, considering that she doesnt have summon spells at all. [)]

You are right about the Human Cleric of Bane though. Would anyone in their right mind tie 87 points of cratures to 30 hp?

I've thought about running the Grim Necro for fun, on the Drow Enclave map. My first phase would be "move Necro forward, summon Minotaur Skeleton on the summoning circle" and "powerful charge into your start area with Minotaur Skeleton". [:D]

I've considered an Epic Aspect of Nerull/Grim Necro band in 500, which would allow you to bring in all the CE undead and benefit from the Grim Necro's commander effect. Problem is, in 500 point the undead just don't hit hard enough to be viable. Well, there is the Nightwalker, but he's a bit too expensive... Maybe the upcoming Dracolich will be a noncommander undead cheap enough to bring in? Probably not.

And since Blue Dragons are LE, theres a good chance you dont need to bring it with the Nerull.
