Does anyone know if there are maps available in like felt or plastic or something? Or atleast a way to preserve them better? After folding alot they tend to rip and get holes in the corners.

Any clues on keeping maps in good shape?

Thanks,
RJC

Get them laminated right after purchase.

We had a great post in the General Section regarding laminating maps. Here are some of the highlights

This can be very cost effective when done through a Teacher's Supply store vs. Kinkos. I get my maps laminated via the "thin lamination" technique. It makes them easy to spread out, and does a great job of preserving them. 2 doublesided maps (4 total, like in a Fantastic Locations) cost about $7.

There's also some plastic "drop-in" type things that can be purchased. The nice thing about these is you only need 1, and then you slide in whatever map you're playing. Of course, its still best to store your maps flat when you're not playing with them so that they don't take the folding/unfolding wear and tear.

I know Felagund and some of the other Fort Collins, CO use these and seem to like them.

It could be an excellent idea to make maps in fabric, like a rug, but i guess it could be a little expensive to make.

The new WD maps mark a lot with the dices, they are done to be destroyed by use, really weak in comparison to the aberration ones.

I just got a bunch laminated and will get my new ones sealed up as well. As long as I keep them in a good clean, dry place they should last forever.

36" x 24" toploader plastic poster holders are great - and map can be removed with care if need be.

I second that! I've got 8 of these so far. at $6 a toploader it's cheaper for me to buy a new toploader for every map than to laminate. You could make it by with only one, if you wanted, though I just went ahead and bought a bunch so I could permanently protect all my maps.

Incidentally, if you've already laminated the maps, toploaders can protect them even further, and they help flatten your maps out. Laminated maps are much easier to get in and out of a toploader.

If you had some maps as digital images you could have them printed on a banner at kinkos. I think that they have a variety of flexible materials you could choose. I think that this might work only for custom maps like Robb's becuase of copyright issues.

If you laminate, go with the 3 mil lamination. The printshop where I get mine done has 3 and 5 mil thicknesses. The thinner thickness seems to lay down better, and doesn't have the "curl memory" that the 5 mil thickness has.
