| Was going to email you, but figured I'd just ask on the board instead...Robb, you're seriously championing the Gulgar now, right? As in, you think it's a genuinely competitive piece and you're not being silly? You recommended it as a Brass Samurai partner in another thread, and I'm curious because I'm just not quite seeing it...
Why exactly is the Gulgar a good piece for CG? Moreover, why is he good in a Brass Samurai band? I can see he has Melee Reach 2 on a Large base, which is a trait a good whirlwinder should have, but the rest of it I'm not sold on. He needs Mialee's help in order to trump DR, and even then he's a 47 pointer hitting at +15 for 15 damage; not as accurate as a Dire Bear would be.
I'm really wondering here, what is it you're seeing that makes the Gulgar so good? I've got its card in my warband page, ready to play it, I just want to know what to expect. | | - Irrationally Fanatical Champion of Pegasus-mounted cavalry - Proud member of Team Low Tier Beasting: I play CG as my main faction! - Garland, TX 2006 Qualifier Champion My trading thread: http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=19725

| Im seeing the Gulgar as the whole package at 70%. Hes got ranged, reach, hits alot for 15, has good AC and HP.. speed 4 is painful.. but a mephling makes that go away.
I see him being useful.. maybe not "viable".. but useful. I would grab him in sealed. after thinking about this.. I can see the use and will try to build something around it. | | Minis... Serious Business Completed Trades (18 ) | Pending Trades (0) Ebay seller to Avoid –Fantasy_Quest_Dist

| It's just the relative versatility of the piece. I'm not saying it's the best unit out there but it has a lot of variables to throw on the table. I think it'd be best with an Inspiring Marshall and other useful ranged/melee pieces. In a Brass Samurai warband he'd be no better than a Dire Bear really. Although Guglar does have reach and an okay attack bonus. Plus a ranged attack if your opponent doesn't want to get his pieces in close for fear of whirlwind. So it could work somewhat. While it's attack bonuses for it's ranged attacks are subpar it can get lucky with two attempts. It has possibilities just because it's one of the few pieces that can be played in CG that has an AC over 20. It's stats other than the speed are all pretty solid. I feel it warrants some look. It's totally different for CG to be the slow man in the game so it is a bit odd but with the way CG fails morale saves slow might not be a bad thing these days.

| Don't forget that the Gulgar is one of the few pieces in CG with a good save. One thing I would consider, for instance, is two Gulgars, three steelheart archers, an elf warrior, a medium astral construct, and a Nentyar hunter. Morale save +12 is close to as good as you're likely to get in CG and with speed 4 you're almost certain to have a chance to rally them. With AC 22 and a large base, they're solid blockers and their ranged attack enables them to benefit from the Nentyar's commander effect until engaged (and even while engaging through melee reach).
Any CG archer band is going to want a solid, survivable front line that isn't too likely to run away. Gulgars fill the survivable part of that role a bit better than Frenzied beserkers.

| I think the biggest reason to consider the Gulgar for Chaotic Good is all the (relatively) cheap and easy tech the faction has access to. Think about the Crow Shaman: he can apply Cat's Grace to the Gulgar, simultaneously increasing his abyssmal ranged attack bonuses and his already solid AC, while Snake's Swiftness will help the sturdy critter tack on more damaged where necessary. Pair a Gulgar with an Elf Pyro, and you've produced a somewhat decent foil for Chraals and Helmed Horrors, especially if you're opponent isn't fielding a Magic Weapon.
I've been considering this as a fun-band:
Gulgar x2 (94 pts) Half-giant Psychic Warrior (42 pts) Crow Shaman (26 pts) Cleric of Correlon Larethian (25 pts) Timber Wolf x2 (10 pts) Xeph Warrior (3 pts)
Play the Half-Giant Glass Cannon lightly, and he can make an excellent clean-up hitter, not to mention a better target for SS spells most of the time. Play it on the Dragonshrine map, which has plenty of choke-points for the sturdy Gulgars to fill up, as well allowing you to pick up some oft-needed elemental resistence if you choose. | | *This post was recorded before a live studio audience*

| I play CG in the Eternal Campaign. My score right now is 5-1 and my only loss so far has been to a Gulgar band…

| Why is the Gulgar good in CG?
Basically, it is a LG piece with a ranged attack that will fight in any warband that would have it. In CG it just happen to have many things that the faction typically lacks while also having the potential to fix some of the Gulgars problems.
I have writen a fairly well recieved evaluation in Merric's article section if only I knew where to find a link to it.

| Man. It just feels so weird when I look at its card...every urge in me says "this is a bad piece", but I really want to try it. I'm going to go ahead and fit it into the following build:
Brass Samurai Gulgar Celestial Pegasus Rikka Graycloak Ranger (with Wolf minion) Mialee Elf Spearguard Devis Map: Broken Demongate. 199 points, 9 activations. | | - Irrationally Fanatical Champion of Pegasus-mounted cavalry - Proud member of Team Low Tier Beasting: I play CG as my main faction! - Garland, TX 2006 Qualifier Champion My trading thread: http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=19725

| Quite honestly as I said I don't think it's best use is with the Brass Samurai. It'd best be served with the Inspiring Marhsall behind it and the Dragon Shrine, most definately not on the Broken Demongate.
Perhaps try this:
Inspiring Marshall Gulgar X2 Celestial Pegasus Wand Expert Mialee (or Crow Shaman plus Aramil) Xeph Warrior X2
You have to use the piece right to see if it can really work.
