What is the deal with commanderless warbands? I see these posted every now and then, but I thought the rules state you have to have a commander. Is there some sort of exception that allows commanderless bands in DCI sanctioned play?

There is no rule that requires warbands to have commander(s).

Well, you can have a commanderless warband. Its only a bad idea, but you can, indeed.I,ve seen some people palying with only a wardrummer as their commander.

Back in the day, I played dual-archmage a few times. It is the best assassination band possible, as one archmage is completely expendabl and can suicide-mardy (or even suicide-double-mordy) almost any target. Of course, the activations suck...

Try Helmed Horror x4, Dark Moon Monk & a Timber Wolf. Man that's a fun band ΖD]

Or another funny one is Marut X2, Sacred Watcher X2, Timber Wolf X2, Man at Arms X2. It's just as annoying as it sounds. I hate the idea of commanderless warbands and they shouldn't win very often due to possible loss of map init and no init bonus but in a large multiplayer melee or team situation why not try them out.

Yes, that question has been in the back of my mind as I read the most recent posts. Is this a change in the rules since Harbinger? (I understand that the Command rules changed.)

I thought you needed a commander in constructed, and that you were required to assign a commander 0 to a figure if you didn't pull a commander in sealed. I'll have to pull out my "Advanced Rules."

The_Duke,

I'm re-reading my Wardrums rulebook and it looks like the commander requirement is actually a guideline cleverly disguised as a rule.

Don't know what the Harbinger rules were--I can't even remember, at this point. But Commanders are definitely not required in the current rules.

Yes, the Commander 0 option is definitely available, but it is not required. From the current DCI Floor Rules:

If a player does not have a commander in their limited warband, he or she can choose to make the lowest-cost, non-Difficult and non-Wild creature in his or her warband a commander with a Commander rating of 0. The creature's base point cost (and thus its victory point value) increases by 5. In the event of a tie for lowest-cost, the owner of the warband selects which model to designate as commander. Before the start of a match, players using this option must clearly mark, and announce to his or her opponent, which model is the commander.

Players may waive this option and not include a commander in their warband.
