| Hey all, my friend was looking to get into DDM and well he will be the CG 1/4 (each of us has a specific faction to save money and no arguments)
so since you guys seem like an infinite wealth of knowledge... what is a good CG band hopefully under 20-30 dollars (ebay of course) that my friend could use...
pleas make it a BEATER band (prolly aspect of kord, maybe one of those barbarians, etc.) but can obviously include ranging and maging tech
Thank you soo much and the only CG i have is Gulgar, Mephling Pyromance, and Half-Ogre Barbarian x2, those two different cougars, and a bunch of common (sneaks, rangers, etc.) elves and halflings (gulgar and pyro seem like a good combo but im no expert)
Thx again

| | With the Half Ogre Barbarians, get a Brass Samurai (Wardrums), a buck or less on ebay, or have your friends all get a pack of wardrums and someone will likely draw one. Add Steelhearts (two at most) for back up, Kord if you really want, but for the same price on eBay get a Rikka. | Well the Gulgar is my favorite new CG piece for it's versatility and solidity where most creatures in the faction are limited. So here's a variant of one of my concepts that will only cost you a little bit.
Inspiring Marshall Gulgar X2 HO Barb X2 Nebin Timber Wolf Lidda, Halfling Rogue or Elf Warrior
You can swap some points around for what filler (commons) you or he want.
Another would be my recent Elf warband. I hardly play themes but this one worked for me very well.
Cleric of Corellon Larethian Divine Champion of Corellon Xendrik Champion X2 Greycloak Ranger X2 (w/ Timber Wolf X2) Aramil, Adventurer Wild Elf Ranger
Morale saves +8 for everything but the Timber Wolves which can't be under command anyway is very nice. The Divine crusader is suprisingly tough and nearly hits every single time. Something about the probable +22/+17 attack bonuses. Her Spiritual Hammers can be great filler killers too.

| Just checking, but you wanted a $20 - $30 band, right?
Well that means you've got to stick primarily to Un/Common minis and splash with a few rares you could afford. If you've got a few Half-Ogre Barbarians, I'd get ahold of a Brass Samurai, an uncommon mini that shouldn't set you back more than a dollar.
If you're gonna spend $20 - $30 on a few "critical" CG pieces, I'd check out the CG portion of the Toolkit ("Stickied" Thread at top of Skirmish Discussion Page) for advice. Personally, for the cost I'd try and get ahold of an an Aspect of Kord or Frenzied Beserker. These minis mesh well with the Brass Samurai and will give your friends band a truly competetive edge. And, cause it's just worth it, you can't go wrong with an Inspiring Marshall. Good luck! | | Champion of all things Athasian "Don't sing it - Bring it!"

| The Brass Samurai's just a dollar or so, and has lots of Uncommons that work well with it. I will agree with the suggestion of picking up a Frenzied Berserker or two. No more than two, but their damage output is impressive if you get a flank going with them.
I'm not so sure I agree with splurging on an Inspiring Marshal just yet. While it's generally accepted to be CG's best commander, our 'best' hasn't been posting many wins lately; it might be worthwhile to start researching new possibilities since our currently defined 'best' isn't getting the job done at this time. | | - Irrationally Fanatical Champion of Pegasus-mounted cavalry - Proud member of Team Low Tier Beasting: I play CG as my main faction! - Garland, TX 2006 Qualifier Champion My trading thread: http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=19725

| Even if he doesn't want to spend alot of cash now there are some rares (commanders) that would be very worthwhile in single amounts. Notably Ryld, Inspiring Marshal, Warchanter and Greenfang druid.
With the Greenfang alone he could run dual Bears + other natural souls / animals+beasts from later sets. The Warchanter is, until something else comes along, the single best way to really boost saves in CG. The Marshal is ... well ... the Marshal and Ryld is simply Ryld.
Still, CG is a very rare-heavy environment right now (and still isn't top-tier) | | Triangle DDM Skirmish Group | My Email | 45-ish trades and counting | Stuff for Trade * * * Show your brother some love and click here * * *

If nothing else, having 3 large bases will teach your friend how to maneuver properly in DDM. Beginners will have a tough time even being able to position 2 large bases to attack a single enemy figure if playing against a more experience opponent. But otherwise, a pretty decent band for what you have in mind. | | Champion of Neogi

I like its use of non-standard pieces. A flying Gulgar also eliminates a lot if its movement problems and Powerful Charge becomes a lot more likely. If you can get her cheap, Mialee may be a worthy addition to this band; you give up an activation but get a Magic Weapon for a beater and a magic missle for the next enemy you see.
If you want to switch to a ranged CG replace the Brass Sam with a Nentyar Hunter and a HOB with Steelheart Archers. You keep one HOB and Gulgar to keep the enemy away from your archers and the Steelheart's don't worry about your engaged big men. The Gulgar may even get some free shots from the Hunter.

| Thank you all for suggestions... I do have a mialee and may tell my friend it is his choice and i like the idea of steelharts so they eliminate triple big bases... maybe
-HO Barb x1 -Xeph x2
+Steelhart x2
loses and activation but less useless fodder (is there any 4 pointer that is way better than xeph, mostly for tile grabbing at first) | | PS. This is what the alphabet would look like if Q and R were removed

| I think I'd go with some version of IF (inspired frenzy). Inspiring marshal Frez Berseker x 1 or 2 Rikka GCR + wolf filler
MIght cost around $40 to put together, but will be competitive at least. | | They just don't know what's good in life...Conan, tell them what is good in life. To rip the boosters. To count the minis spilled out before you, and to hear the indifference of the women...

| Thanks everyone
New.: that is a solid band and he will most likely evolve into a build like that but 40$ is a bit too much for a test but im sure it will eventually happen... thank you

Archer bands are hard to make work, although the King's Road map helps them out somewhat (at the same time can help the opponent).
Both Underdark and War Drums have some nice figures for CG. Neither has anything super spectacular (maybe the Gulgar! [:p]) I'd say neither is better than the other.
Oh and realize that you might not get your Ebay purchases in less than a week.

| Solid archer bands have a problem without a budget. I had offered a basic way to convert your earlier beater band into an archer band. The net result looks something like this.
47 Nentyar Hunter 47 Gulgar 38 Mephling Pyromancer 25 Half-Ogre Barbarian 30 Steelheart Archer x2 13 Aramil, Adventurer (if you have it) 7 activation
You have two large bodies to slow the enemy down. The Pyro can soften the enemy up early or be sacrificed to make more room for archers in the warband. Aramil can nerf the opposition if they get close so your blockers hopefully live longer.

| If you have your heart set on an archer band I might try to get something with the Nentyar Hunter and a Half-Elf Bow Initiate or 2. This will likely go over the cost limit (I have nil experience with E-bay, but I can guess the HEBIs will be expensive), but consider it a long term goal if your friend has his heart set on a very powerful range CG squad, it just needs some meaty screeners to block for the archers and it's golden. No range guys hit like HEBIs in my experience and with the Nentyar they can shred even the biggest titans in short order if not dealt with.
Personally I would forget the range band as they tend to be pretty lame, especially against current high-speed melee squads; the one I've mentioned is the only really effective one I've seen.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Champion of Eilistraee as she's one of the best CG commanders out there. Again this one will likely be expensive, but if you want to splurge on something this would be my choice. +2 to melee and AC for any follower wielding a sword (check the D&D stats, since it's not always obvious and most CG units have them) and any Drow are legal in your Warband, is one of the best CFX out there in general IMHO. Aside from this, she's Command Rating 4 and seconds as a pretty good beater with good to-hits, damage, AC, and HP. She is the queen when used with ANY barbarians.
People have mentioned the Inspiring Marshal, and all I can say is: Meh...He's probably pretty good with a range band because of his CFX, but otherwise he's a one trick pony with his movement SE, and though his Command rating 4 is nice for his points, he's combat useless. The Champion of Eilistraee is much more versatile (and keep in mind that even range guys can be effected by her CFX as long as they carry a sword on their D&D stats; it's no bonus to range but the AC and melee to-hit can help a lot if you get based). | | "I am created Shiva, the Destroyer; Death, the Shatterer of Worlds." - the Bhagavad-gita
