I'm a longtime LSD fan, but I just can't quite do what I want to with an LSD. If only I had 10 more points...

Anyway, next up is the Marut. Here is my Marut Band:

1x Marut
1x Couatl
1x Cleric of Yondalla
1x Warforged Bodyguard
1x Standard Bearer
1x Aramil, Adventurer
1x Warforged Scout
1x Timber Wolf
---------------------
198 pts 8 activations

I'm very happy with the band. If there was a figure that I was going to change it would be the Timber Wolf, but I can't think of anything else to replace it with...

For the map I'm thinking of Drow Outpost. It funnels combat nicely, and the band does quite well even if it is not on the ideal side. That new map with forests is tempting too, a cover bonus against a nerfed beater is nifty.

I'm very happy with what Aramil and the Standard Bearer do for this band.

Thoughts on the band?

I like it, but my big concern would be facing hill giants on the teleport temple. I know from personal experience (though mostly from the other side) how easy it is to get outmanuvered by Hill Giants on the map, as they pick off your support pieces one by one. That is one of the major things preventing me from bringing a marut build to a tournament these days. Though considering that no teleport temples or hill giants showed up at our last tournament, maybe I should be concerned about something else. [)]

I am not gone.

I like the concept - however your weakness really is flying threats, such as HH's swarming the Couatl (with some luck you can ground one or so) - it's save is simply too low to rely on...

One of these days WoTC will update their tournament page when I'm in the top 5... they never seem to do when I'm in that bracket :(

If you want to replace the Wolf, consider either Mialee or an Azer Raider. Mialee may not seem a good choice with Yondalla in the band, but, you never know when a magic missile will help. And, she can always cast her magic weapon on the Couatl. (How often does that rainbow serpent get based, after all?)

The Azer is nice too, I've found him to be remarkably sturdy against similarly-costed opponent pieces.

HH have to be *VERY* careful as if they are nerfed by Aramil they will only be doing 5 damage/swing to Couatl, and 0 damage/swing to Marut/WFB. The WFB can protect the Couatl as well as the Marut.

Yeah, against HGB it really comes down to rolls. They will be hard pressed to hit the Marut, especially if they get nerfed, but they only need 5-6 hits to win.

And, as you point out, they are able to eliminate the Couatl early (I don't care about the rest of the band), then the game is as good as theirs.

I just have to be careful with the Couatl.

Yeah, I've thought of those. Even though I'm unsure of the TW, I like him better than those. Tile points win games...

I like the band. My main concern would be the map in regard to what alepulp said about fliers - i.e. drow out post is a choke point map, but not as much for fliers who can just go over the pits. You can use legion's, but you can't count on high level pieces failing saves. You might be better off on Magma Keep were you could use the walls to your advantage (by limiting points of attack by your opponents).

But then again, you probably already knew this and considered it before.[:P]

Maps are something I've actually thought very little about. You are right about HH flying over the pits, but with Aramil I'm not too afraid of HH.

The only thing that concerns me if (1) other Marut Bands, or any band with a Couatl (hence Standard Bearer), (2) CE beater bands (especially HGB), this matchup is much more reliant on the dice that I would like. It may be that there should be other things that should concern me, and I'd be glad to hear of them.

I understand very well you feel happy with your warband because it,s solid and very hard-to-kill.Very few minis can face a marut+couatl+bodyguard como and survive. But I think you must to remove some of your minis and include a cleric order.Believe me: +AC and +3 save to the marut make him much more unbeatable.I think the only warbands that can beat marut (with good luck, indeed) are hill giants, orc champs and frenzied.

Actually my first build was:

1x Marut
1x Couatl
1x Warforged Bodyguard
1x Cleric of Order
1x Mialee, Elf Wizard (gotta have magic weapon)
1x Warforged Bodyguard
1x fodder

I liked this build since it ensured that the Couatl would hang around (lvl 9, +3 w/ major resistance, and +5 CoO commander, only failed morale on 1-2). It just wasn't as strong against mirror matches and Helmed Horrors, specifically, or anything else for that matter.

Think of it this way, Aramil give -2 attack, and -5 damage, Shield of Faith only gives +2AC. Sure you have to get it off, but that isn't that hard.
