Does a flying mounted pally (through elf pyromancer) draw an Attack of opportunity when it flies above a target and attacks, then flies away?

If the answer to the above is no..... then why cant an Archmage Cast a mordy sword above a target occupying the same space assuming there is no forest cover?

Do tell!

Flying prevents AoO's. It doesn't prevent an enemy from threatening the flying creature, and you can't cast a spell while threatened.

Just avoid ending the movement adjacent to an enemy, and remember that a flying creature only draws AOO from the adjacent enemies when it moves it's first square.

ooh flying paladin

Interesting

Unfortunately that is 176 points leaving you (most likely)

With healer, and 4 commoners as filler

could work kindaish [:)]

as answered you can't cast a spell when threatened. the question I have is can this happen when using quick cast?

Or to word that last question a bit better..... Can you quick cast (swift action) while threatened? Since you take no AOO from activating a teleporter (swift action), I can see this argument going both directions.... Gonna have to ask Guy for a ruling.

I think the answer is that flying creatures are effectivly "grounded" between movement. When it is not their turn. What allows the Mounted Pally to attack and move is the Mounted Combat ability which is a super charged version of Spring attack. The Archmage has no such ability. He must land to cast a spell. He can be threatened while he has landed. He can not HOVER over a square that is occupied by another creature.

If somehow he got Spring Attack, then yes he could cast the spell then move away. There would be no AoO.

And to answer the orriginal question. No, the Mounted Paladin does not draw an AoO when under the effect of the Mephling Pyromancer's Fly spell.

Quick cast doesn't really matter in this case. The reason you can't cast a non-touch spell while threatened by a creature (and don't have cover) is because the rules in the book say so.

It being a swift action isn't going to change that, nor will flying. While threatened and without cover, you can only cast touch spells, not even self ones.

This is not strictly true. The archmage can, while flying, use any of his spells mid flight (in the middle of a move) if he has not yet used his quick cast ability. Once that ability is used up, your statement is correct.
