This is a multiple part question. My friends and I play friendly games, we pick our warbands and basically pick a random map. I happened to be on a map where both of my starting areas were unprotected...I thought I did pretty well making sure they were protected, but my opponent found one line of sight to one of my characters.

His Erinyes hit my entire warband for 20 hp and -2 attack before I even got to move a single figure!

Then, the big question we had is that the one figure he did have line of sight to had spell resistance, and he missed the roll so the spell missed it's target. If the target of the spell is missed, does the spell fail, or do all the other figures within area of effect take damage as normal?

All in the spell effect area have to make a save against the spell. Just cuase the spell didnt effect the main target does not mean it wont effect the other minis that fall within the spells radius.

SneakyJoe has it right, but to provide a little more information: An area-effect spell does not dissipate just because the main target is unaffected. From what I understand, insofar as RPG-logic goes for this, the spell strikes the target...and for some magical reason, they are unaffected. The spell's effect goes over them, but does nothing meaningful.

You could think of it as sending a wave of flames at someone wearing a fire-proof suit. The fire certainly hits them, and washes past their form to go on to potentially burn others even though the man in the fire-suit is unaffected.*

*: This isn't a scientific statement, I'm unsure just how 'fire immune' such suits are. It's used for 'dramatic' illustrative purposes.

it was an excellent visual and simple example. I would have done something with superheroes like "I throw a grenade and hit my target (Superman) in the chest.. when it blows up and he doesnt get hurt, does everyone else around him get hurt.. even tho he didnt suffer any damage?"
