so ya.. ive been up 5 hours thinking of best ways of using Warduke...

for small modest fee of 70 points you get a low ac, low/medium damage, very high hp gladiator, 130 hp high. he can force a target to make a morale save and with his special ability he goes from (10m +5 fire) to (20m +5 fire) with +17/+12 on lowest level enemy. he also has cleave, blindsight and spell resistance and hes independant.

so i figure there are two ways to use him:

in the front lines relying on other pieces to kill off opponents low level pieces

solo breaking down your opponents army from the lowest levels on up

using him front lines is what i have been doing and he like homer simpson when he was a boxer. im starting to think using him solo might be a better option even tho it may be a waste of 70 points.

with him solo, your opponent would have to direct some heavy artillery his way which means taking it away from the main force right? but using him front lines means your opponent has to waste time burning through all his hp.

but because of his high cost there isnt much room for more beaters with wardrummer

i would like to see the thoughts from those more experianced than myself (pretty much includes everyone) on how he is best used

I'm not sure he has a place in 200/8 at all, with the current options open to CE. He fights like a 30-49 point beater does, then pays a lot of extra points for Cleave, Intimidate, Spell Resistance and Methodical Killer.

I thought about this for a while...and while CE's not my main faction -- therefore this is hardly an expert opinion with lots of experience behind it -- I wonder if the 70 point Warduke could fit into Epic play well. Methodical Killer will actually be meaningful in this format, since he'd now be doing +17/+12 (20 Magic + 5 Fire) to virtually anything. 130 HP, Cleave, and other abilities would be useful in this case.

In Epic, virtually every enemy Warduke runs into would be meaningful, once you dispose of the token Timber Wolf VA-grabber. If this makes him worth his 70 points, I don't know. But it seems plausible to me; that's 50 possible damage output without any support, with 130 HP. Compared to a Marut at +20 for a single 20 Magic + 10 Sonic strike (and Fearless, admittedly), that looks fairly decent.

I think he'd see more play if he were perhaps 55 points, but as it stands my best guess is he was actually built for Epic play, in both of his forms.

Have you tried him on Teleport Temple?

1. I think the last poster is on to something. One of wardukes bigger problems is that his speed 6 is not enough to let him choose the unit he wants to attack. Teleport temple might help that. (Or it might not).

2. I also think 70 pt warduke has legs in 500 pt games. It's not a gimme though. A typical 500 point warband will have a few figures that are lower level than its beaters--a cleric of order and a coatl for instance, or Ryld and an orc druid or tiefling (or a wardrummer). He would need to be paired with something highly mobile and able to clear fodder quickly in order to be effective. (Though even at base damage (especially with a damage boosting commander), he could fill the same role as a justicator--reliable backup hitter)

I dunno if this would work for you because we play 300 pt warbands, but one of the fellas at the shop used Warduke, Vampire Aristocrat, and Orc Wardrummer to great effect. He took out my fully healthy Aspect of Hextor with Warduke's special ability because of all the negatives to morale. Then the VA's commander effect took hold and destroyed the Aspect. I don't remember, but I think he had a mini with aura of fear as well in range of my Aspect (maybe an Ogre Ravager).

The only Warduke band I've ever had much success with, even for fun, was this:

Warduke
Ogre Ravager
Mounted Drow Patrol
Bugbear Champ of Erythnul
Orc Wardrummer
Timber Wolf
Hyena
Orc Warrior

I think the MDP can be big in making Warduke work, as something that can usually do a good job clearing low-level fodder/tech from the board. The Ravager tends to be strong against many opponents that otherwise have to the ability to chew through the band's relatively low HPs quickly; Aura of Fear for use with Intimidate is just gravy, and shouldn't be counted on.

One of the big things is the Bugbear's CFX, which makes Warduke's weenie damage a little bit more tolerable (he also provides a handy MW for the Ravager). There could quite possibly be better options than the BCoE, but this is the best I've come up with...

im thinking have warduke and 2 hitters. this way warduke can go behind enemy lines and do his thing forcing the opponent to split his forces

if he ignores warduke, my two hitters should do enough so when warduke comes to play, the enemy will have to burn through a ton of hp in a weakened state. with enemies already weak the low warduke damage isnt a problem, hes just finishing them off.

studying the warduke card for hours i can see a few things backing up the idea of using him hunting to trigger his methodical killer buff

hes independent, means he is always under command no matter where he goes. he has cleave, finishing off groupped opponents

people usually have their ranged units behind their hitters so wardukes blindsight and spell resistance is perfect for when hes hunting in their turf

so i came up with the warband called "PREDATOR"

warduke 70
rask 52
blood ghost berserker 37
orc sergeant 24
orc savage 7
orc skeleton 5
hyena 5

I've been having a lot of fun playing:

Balor
Warduke
Orc Wardrummer
Hyena
Orc Warrior x4

Giving -4 to whomever you intimidate, then watching them fail the enslave role is great. lots of fodder to help up your initiative, and you've got 165 victory points tied into 255 hp's.

Not the best out there, but it's fun and could give your opponent fits when piloted correctly.
