to be honest, when i first saw the large fang dragon i cried a little on the inside.

yet another CE piece with low attack and a dragon with no breath weapon!!!

but then i started using him! i think he is one of the best flanking pieces for those heavy melee clashes.

his high hp and better then average armor make him perfect for flanking while his large base keeps the enemy from swarming. with flanking his first attack is at plus 12 but for 20-30 damage which can not be ignored.

he also can cut off opponents pieces from moving deeper into the fight because an aoo from him can hurt a lot.

sure things like timber wolf with high speed make a gret flanker but can often be killed or routed with one activation letting the opponent bring another act into the battle.

the large fang doesnt suffer from this so may be used as a long term flanking piece

what do you guys think?

edit: forgot to mention how great this piece works with the dragon totem hero and large green dragon. you can fit dragon totem, large green and 2 large fangs making their hit with flanking 14/12/12

I played this band last night:

Hezrou
Large Fang Dragon x 2
Orc Wardrummer
Hunting Hyena x 2
Hyena
Gnoll
Dragonshrine

I like this band and think it as pretty solid. The strategy is obviously to flank an opponent with the Hezrou on one side and a Large Fang Dragon on the other. Against stenchable opponents, this will give the LFD +2 from the Hezrou's Commander Effect, +2 effective from the target's lower AC, and +2 from the flank bonus. If you manage to fight on a Magic circle, you could get +2 more.

At this point, your LFD is hitting at 16/14/14, which is good enough most of the time. This band will do well against most Chaotic bands and should do all right against most typical LE teams. Foes with DR, constructs (immune to stench and the LFD Blood Drain), and very high ACs are the undoing for this band. Too many of the above problem pieces are played today to make the Fang Dragon team your best choice overall, but I think it can be competitive at smaller tournaments.

I played lynchpt's band last night--I was playing a "fun" band (read: tier 2-3):
Balor
Firebelcher
Bugbear Champ of Erythnul
Quaggoth x2
Abyssal Maw
Gnoll
Hyena
Drow Outpost

Losing map init and having to play on Dragonshrine was the first blow. Having to choose between three large figures with over 100 hp each was the second. Then, I couldn't help but get out in the middle of the big hall in the middle of the map. This allowed for the flanking and magic circle effects lynchpt describes.

(Could I have "turtled" my high-speed band to control a choke point on this map? hard to say with the perpendicular hallways).

The Large Fang is a force in open spaces, too many hit points, and that Blood Drain is nothing to sneeze at. I might have done better in this matchup if I replaced the Firebelcher with a Large Fang.

The Large Fang might have also done well on my map, as the choke point is negated by flyers.

Consider moving the Large Fang Dragon to LE with the Hobgoblin Talon of Tiamat. The Talon boosts the LFD's attacks to very respectable bonuses, and he works reasonably well for non-draconic followers as well.

HToT
LFD
Duergar Champ x2

Could be the core of an interesting new band. The LFD is a nice counter to many Chaotic bands, with his relatively higher damage.

I now have a Have/Want list updated with all my rares! Stop by to take a look!

Hobgoblin Talon of Tiamat can only bring in Spawn of any faction into LE, not Dragons.

You could also try:

58 Dragon Totem Hero
34 Bladesinger
84 Large Fang Dragon x2
18 Nebin, Gnome Illusionist
06 Xeph Warrior x2

You only get one magic weapon this way (you could sacrifice an activation for Mialee and a 2nd magic weapon), but if you can make use of both commander effects at the same time, the dragons can do some serious hurt. The use of the blur spells depends on what you're fighting. If you're worried about commander assassination, blur the commanders. Otherwise blur the dragons to make them even more difficult to kill.
