Since a large shadow dragon can shadow jump and use its breath weapon to kill all your fodder, then jump back to safty, are the days of 8 activation warbands numbered?

I doubt it. I think a lot of bands will still have 8+ activations.

However, I agree with your general concern and think that we may see a rise in bands with only 5 or 6 activations.

I agree.  Activation control should still be important.Â

But is it not funny how the following fit together:

Ultroloth 62
FGFP 84
Exarch of Tyranny 54

200 points, 3 activations.Â

Knight of the Rahshasa's
And Crusader of the Zakya, Ak'chazar, Naztharune, and Naityan Rakshasa's

As long as it's 4-6 tight activations, everything has a role, sometimes those warbands can do surprisingly well. If they're resiliant enough to hang in there to eliminate the enemies activations before they drop any quite often they may be unstopable. It often relies a lot on luck though.

I have never played a warband with less than 7 act. Maybe I will experiment this week see how it goes.

If your playing fun games activations aren't a problem but in compeditive play 8 activations are key going with less IMHO is risky. Activation control is key it's also why commander rating are so important.

With the Large Shadow Dragon, having 8 activations will be just as risky as having 6 activations

I think gone are the day you went "I have 12 points left and 4 minis to fill. 4 Orc Warriors!" You have to have more durability than that...

I think now we see the rise of the mid point fodder!

Certainly at the Championships having low hp activation control fodder is something to really think about. The maps allow those Shadowjump Breath Weapons. I think it's questionable whether it's a universal worry though.

I would say the number of bands with 10-12 activations will certainly drop.  If you have 2 Graycloaks, 2 wolves, 2 xephs, and 2 bats, (coincidentally 48 points, just like a shadow dragon) it doesn't take long for your army to go from 12 activations to 4 activations.  With 8-9, there is a little less crap on the board and your targets aren't as juicy.Â

I won a qualifier playing 7 activations.  I had been practicing with 6, but I found just one more to be a big help.  If you do play with fewer than 8, you need a plan on how to deal with the opposition.  I had a flying VNC; so by turn 3, my 9-7 activation disadvantage was often a 6-7 activation advantage.

Conversely "Lady Vol" might bright back the "swarm of summoned fodder" warband with 20+ activations.

Which will also reduce the value of the 9-12 activation warbands. Simply because they can't get "activation control".

She might also make the "Mob+Squad Activation" creatures viable.

Don't worry about the current metagame. It doesn't matter if it's ugly, bad, or the best ever. In 2 years time, set rotation will ban everything.

As much as I would like Lady Vol to have that sort of effect I just don't see it...

But fodder in general has been on the wane for awhile... how many 3pt pieces have come out in the last few sets??? The design team is having trouble keeping up with figs that allow for extra actiavtions for cheap... Maybe they are planning for lower activation warbands...

As a rule right now I won't play under 7 and expect to win reliably... but looking around it's getting easier to justify... 5-6 will probably soon see its day but for every 5-6 you will still see a 10+... LE can get lots and lots and lots... AOE dmg is keeping that from seeing too much play...

Minions and summons hopefully will come back into play... LE and LG should be getting minions every other set! A "summoner" with 1-2 minions would be a great mini... Summons rules need looked at again...

Demons and Devils need Summons!!! they need a lot more than that but this would be a step in the right direction... the Balor effect killed these outsiders before they got started... hopefully the design team sees this and drops it and dragon effects the outsiders (demons and devils mostly)... they are costed to have summons with them thats for sure...

kinda getting off topic so I end...
