| The light steel shield has a base 5% chance of spell failure. Mithral reduces this to 0%
The max is 0%. The metal can't help you cast spells better than you could without it. [)] | |

| | I was just looking at some of these options for my Mystic Theurge. I was looking for a way to stack Mage Armor and Magic Vestment. The latter can be cast on a buckler to enhance the shield bonus which stacks with the Mage Armor bonus. Are we sure that arcane spell failure can be brought to 0%? I can't find anything in the core books that says otherwise, but I'm not always up to date on the errata. | |

Not quite! The masterwork cost is included in the cost of the mithral. You do *not* add it on top of the cost of the mithral item. Mithral items are automatically masterwork, due to the cost of the material.

AC penalties also die at 0. And, this is one of my favorite tricks with magi and Archers (and monks -- it's a shield not armor!). Magical mithral bucklers are fantastic. Cast spells, shoot arrows, keep a shield bonus to AC. Sign me up! | |

Yes. The logical subtraction of 10 from 5 is -5. However, that could effectively give a bonus to casting if your character was wearing armor. That can't happen, so the net result is 0%, or no affect on your ability to cast arcane spells. 0% is the best chance of spell failure possible from any item of armor -- it's as if you don't even have the item. | |

And if you take the Improved Buckler Defense feat from the Complete Warrior, you get the bonus to AC even if you attack with a weapon in that hand! I love masterwork bucklers.
And next time I play my elven swashbuckler mage, he'll have a mithril breastplate. Hoody-hoo!

| | Yeah, but shields are the only thing that get the largest benefit from this. Most armor drops down in weight and penalties, but it doesn't really disappear. | |
