| When I saw this, I thought you were talking about a personal RPG fund. And yes, I do have one. After a crazy month on Ebay, I was forced to *regulate* my RPG purchases.
But no, our group doesn't have a fund. Then again, we don't meet as frequently as we'd like, and I already have pretty much everything.

I was thinking the same thing about a "personal slush" fund for RPG use. I have one of those....[}:)]
I asked the guys I game with to chip in some cash from time to time to help defray some of the costs of snacks and such. But it has fallen to the wayside..... | | Ambassador of FUN!!!

| | As for the RPG slush fund for the group, no. We play at my house (I'm the only one with kids), so I feel responsible for providing drinks. Everyone else--on no particular schedule--brings snacks each week. Every once in a while, I'll have everyone over for a cookout before we play. Again, I'm thankful I get to play D&D on a regular basis, so it has never bothered me that I invest more into our group financially. | | The man who thinks he can, and the man who thinks he can't are both right. | I think it's a great idea but this question has always prevented me from trying anything similar...
What happens when one or more players leave the group? Since the material is community property how do you divide it up?
I think your idea could work great for a solid group destined to be together for a long time. But in my experience, people change jobs & move, have kids, or simply lose interest. I have rarely had a group stick together for more than a couple of years. Have you had to deal with those issues?
If you have a workable solution I'd love to hear it.

This could be dangerous. How do you determine who "owns" the book? What if one (or more) of the players leaves the group? Are these "community" books kept by one of the players?
I think it's a good idea to have a food/snack fund or even a minis fune because you can break those cases up by booster. But community books is something i would stay far away from. | | WotC - making me wish more and more every day for a return to the TSR days. :(

It has turned out pretty awesome, in that it allows us as a group to buy maybe a book or two a month, a case of minis every once in a while, and of course pizza every once and a while =) All of which we would all be to cheap to purchase ourselves.
If there is any one else out there who does anything similar, I'm curious how you work it.
My last gaming group in the deep south (New Orleans) had a number of interesting traditions. One tradition was that the DM (like any guest of honor in the south) should never go thirsty--so players, of our own volition, made sure that he always had what he wanted to drink. As for food, well, we all chipped in.
What did go into our fund though, was quarters. If we were caught being too far "out of character" or metagaming, we had to put a quarter into a jar. You'd collect a couple of bucks in a night, but it was more of a symbol that you should stay in character. Of course, at the end of the year you had plenty of money in there, and the DM usually used it to order us dinner. | | POST DISCLAIMER: Above post may contain humor. Now with micro scrubbing bubbles. That's a good question. We have a list of everything we've baught with the fund to seperate it form our own personal books and minis and haven't really planned for anything except we'll divvy it up when we're done or split up.
Because the group I play with it shouldn't be a problem though. In the past whoever needed the books has used them, and since if any of us are playing it will be with each other... the only guy who doesn't get to use the books isn't playing anyway!
While we're somewhat on the topic, one of the guys in our group and I have all of the Forgotten Realms novels.... I buy some, he buys some, heh... after about 10 years of this we've kind of come to the informal agreement that whoever has the nicest bookshelf gets to have them in it [:D] | | Join the Eternal Skirmish Campaign.

| | Every once in a while when I purchase some big game needs (pencils, binders, folders, etc) I ask the group to throw in $5 to help offset the cost. We play at my house and I do all the printing of hundreds of color pictures. We all know the cost of print cartidges. they are cool with it and they understand that it is all the property of the DM. They are friends of mine so they don't care that the property is mine. They know that I put way to much time and money into the game including thousands of minis which they love. That $5 doen't cover nearly the cost of those thousands of minis!!! | | Give me more MIND FLAYERS! | |

| Well our group is proof that not all people are equal... financially speaking.
We have one guy who is an unemployed layabout who lives off of his girlfriend. One of our GM's spends a small fortune on books. One guy has two seperate child support payments. My husband and I run our own business and have a good amount of cash flow. We find ourselves treating the others to dinner about once a month. (This week we brought brats but last month we brought a 14 pound rib roast.)
Group funds are kind of out of the question for our group. [:(]

Back in Highschool I was lucky to have a student government with the ability to disburse funds to all the various student organizations. One year we pulled a coup on them, brought in many members of the game club into the Student Council and requistioned funding for us. We didn't see the money untill the following year and by then I had graduated, still I heard they made out quite well for themselves. | | Pathetic Earthlings. | it has actully been jokingly commented on several occasions that every time a game is run at my place(usually 1 or 2 and sometimes 3 times a week) everyone should put a dollar in a jar to offset my daughter's therapy bills when she grows up (she's almost 2 at the moment).
The deaf group i play with has a rather nasty rule that if a player actually uses verbal speach beyong laughing, they must put a gold coin in the naughty jar, we usualy use that money to buy dinner at the end of the month. | | Einstein would turn in his grave; God does play dice, and the dice are loaded!
