The best city sourcebook I've ever found was Carse, by Midkemia Press. It's been out of print for over a decade, but you can usually find a copy or two on eBay. Absolutely great iso-map, and every single building is keyed. It's generic, as far as rules.
A lot of people on EN World rave about the new version of City State of the Invicible Overlord. I haven't read it, so I can't speak to that first-hand.
The Game Mechanics have a modular city in production that I'm pretty happy with: the first book is Thieves Quarter and Temple Quarter will be out Real Soon Now. | | Jeff "Wayne Laredo" Wilder | Email | Have/Want List | Trade Policies | Are You an Ethical Trader?

| Are you familiar with the anthology books called "Thieves World"? They were very well done anthologies released in the mid 80's to the late 90's.
I have heard a rumble that the "world" is being redone for d20. 99% of the action takes place in the City of Sanctuary. I imaigne therefore than 99% of the D20 info shall be on the city of Sanctuary itself....
If I find more ifo, I'll post a link.

| AEG..the company that made Worlds Largest Dungeon is supposedly making Worlds Largest City.
I think its supposed to be bigger than any city published and it will flesh out every stinking NPC, building and guild and dungeon in it.
The book will probably be another phonebook-sized monstrosity :)
Necromancer games has also been talking about a major City called Bard's Gate. But Necromancer Games has been saying that it will be released someday since they made their first d20 product. | | Champion of the Skulk Vindicated Champion of the Twig Blight

| You can buy the Living Greyhawk Journal as a PDF that has the awesome Greyhawk City map. You can also get that map as a CC2 file online for free from the author's website. It really is an excellent city map.
And if the LGJ info on the city isn't adequate (it only detailed a few sections of the city), you could always try and pick up a copy of The Gem of the Flanaess which is a detailed supplement on Greyhawk City. I think you can also get it as a PDF from RPG Now. | | Bite me.

| A Carnival of Swords, by Paradigm also has information on Old Coryan, the old quarter of the absolute metropolis that is Grand Coryan, capital of the Rome-inspired Coryani Empire in Arcanis. Also includes an adventure.
Nishanpur: The City of Secrets, by the same company is similar, but is set in Nishanpur, the seething den of corruption at the heart of the evil nation of Canceri.
There may be other products like this by Paradigm, both of these are excellent though. Ask Captain Harlock, our resident Arcanis pimp. | | Support awesome games: Play Hecatomb!

| Thanks for the suggestions. I'll do a little digging.
Going to avoid anything by AEG; don't like their stuff. I saw Carnival of Swords a while back, but didn't think it had much -- I'll look again.

| Cauldron isn't a large city, by any means. It is well made, though.
Also, look for any information on Sigil (the City Plane).

| What kind of population are we talking for most of these? I forget the D&D community categories at the moment, but I want at LEAST five digits. On the other hand, I don't want it to be a sprawling metropolis that will take the adventurers' entire lives to explore. So, Sigil is probably out. | | My H/W list is not current... That might be your biggest issue is not generic enough. Its got a ton of great info but alot of that pends on being the high magic adventure campaign it is. It gives pretty detailed descriptions of all the neighborhoods. Sharn is a city of towers that there are several levels of. So it is has (off the top of my head 5) major plateaus and the city raises from them. When I suggested it I didnt think that much about how specific it is. Dont know how well it would translate. | | Im out- find me on Hordelings if you want to chat. | |

| Greyhawk City has a population of roughly 70,000 people.
Populations of cities, though, tend to be so far off base that they should be ignored anyway. IIRC, London had over a million people in 1500 AD. I can't recall many fantasy cities getting even close to that amount.
Maybe it's because all the monsters e't 'em?
Here's that map I was talking about: http://melkot.com/locations/cogh/cogh.html
It may take a few moments to load, but it's well worth it.
Unfortunately, the Living Greyhawk Journal that has detailed information on parts of the city, is unavailable. I also looked for Gem of the Flanaess and Folks, Feuds and Factions, but neither is available as a PDF... legally. I know they exist as I have a copy of both. Just depends on how you feel about OOP PDF's I guess. | | Bite me.

Union was another major planar city where beings from all over the multiverse came to trade goods.
Its in the Epic Level Handbook so its a good base of operations for epic characters and a place to buy epic majic items....not to useful for low level characters.
I always though Union was kinda silly though. The city guard are epic level NPCs. I know its the only way to keep the peace in a city full of epics.....but at the same time I can imagine going through what a person needs to go though and accomplish to reach epic levels...and then become a city guard. | | Champion of the Skulk Vindicated Champion of the Twig Blight

| Think of how much you would have to pay even a single epic level city guard, much less a legion of them. Taxes would have to be prohibatively high, and I complain about my property tax in Illinois.

As for City State of the Invicible Overlord, I can not wait. As an old school gamer, I remember the original, one of the best products (if not the best) from Judges Guild and would love to revisit it.

| Here's another for you:
Monte Cook is releasing his city campaign setting, Ptolus, next month. It's going to be a 640-page, full color source book. It's about one huge city, and was one of the test "worlds" for the 3E rules (so sayeth the blurb).

| Big cities can be found in a number of old Judges Guild Products:
City State of the Invicible Overlord was the first. Tarantis City State of the World Empereor was the largest. Mid size to small city was Modron Restormel was another mid sized town/city.
Carse was pretty useful from Midkemia Press Thieves Guild works, detailed many parts of a city (Haven I think)
In some old White Dwarf mags there was a serial city that was published over the span of about a dozen issues that was very detailed. (Something like Irrilian, IIRC)
You could find some Runequest cities like Pavis that would add a different flavor, or even delve into Tekumel for truely out of this world stuff (the EPT is very different.)

| Even more Info:
Dragon #334 is the start of a new series (I assume) of articles focusing on various cities of the Forgotten Realms. Each city has a write up, map, and descriptions of various things found in each location.
