| Khemit (otherwise known as Aegypt). The PCs in my Greyhawk campaign went through a portal (Stargate) to participate in Gary Gygax's Necropolis there.
Imagine Ancient Egypt where the Pharoahs survived to late mediaeval times and you have it.

| I'm using Scarred Lands. (More specifically, Calastia.)
My players are running a group of very independent-minded characters in a realm governed with an iron hand. The interesting thing is that the common folk, by and large (or those that have time to care), have embraced the prosperity that nationalism and expansionism have brought to their nation. (If that sounds familiar, hey, don't blame me ... ) So it's not a matter of the PCs leading a just rebellion of a downtrodden peasantry ... that would be too simple.
Basically, the PCs are in the situation (or, to be more precise, are headed that way) where they have to decide if they can make governance decisions for other people, solely because the current government is evil.
Even though Scarred Lands is a high-powered setting like Forgotten Realms, I've found that the NPCs and events aren't constantly in the DM's face like they are in FR. Scarred Lands is a setting; my games take place there. I've always felt more like FR is a place where my games are barely and grudgingly permitted to exist alongside all the "official" goings-on.
My next campaign, BTW, is going to be an Iron Heroes game. I've just started reading the rulebook, and it is everything I wish D&D were ... at least so far. | | Jeff "Wayne Laredo" Wilder | Email | Have/Want List | Trade Policies | Are You an Ethical Trader?

| | Scarred Lands here too. What initially attracted me to the setting was the back story of the war between the Gods and their parents the Titans (not MM titans these were massive 'forces of nature' type things). In the beginning there were only 8 gods and one surviving titan that fought on the side of the gods. Divine and Defeated added a few lesser and demi gods to the mix (one of the best 'flavour' books out there for the Scarred Lands btw). I really like the various city books too as they get to the 'meat' of the city without a lot of wasted space on stat blocks and such. I want a city book to descibe the city and its inhabitants as living, breathing people, not more 'monsters' for the party to mow down. They usually give a brief "name, sex, race, class, level, alignment' thing for any named npc before describing their function and personality. | | Completed Trades: Crescent Hawk, Vimes, demagogue, vidman, Eric is God, Strachan Fireblade, FungiMuncher, Dudeeehm, Shasack, gausse, kyrin, nyjastul69 Champion of the Remorhaz | |

The odd think about KoK is that there is one pathenon of gods..thats it.
There is no elf or dwarf panthenon...everyone worships the same gods no matter what the race.

| | we use a semi-homebrew campaign, the world is ORB, was represented by a series of books(inferno! was one) and even a few fighting fantasy novels, though no source books were written, some dude had worked out the panteon of gods and with that basis our gm has filled in the blanks, made maps etc. A low magic world(well for the pcs the bad guys seems to have a unlimited resource of magic:) and pretty much anything you want can be added, you want warforged no worries they can be fitted in, though mostly it has the feel of the old school grayhawk, forgotten realms before it got full of power pc's. | | BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS | |

| I'm participating in both a Kalamar and Scarred Lands campaign at the moment via PBeM. I still love the Forgotten Realms but of recent years I've found myself moving farther and farther away from it other then perhaps tapping it for source material. Homebrew campaign worlds tend to lead the pack in my hand (3 out of 6 games I'm in).
The Kalamar game I'm in has been waxing and waning for almost 3 years but I think we've all become attached to the characters so even if things get slow we tough through it. And the single pantheon of gods is a feature that's come to grow on me and something I've incorporated in to my own homebrew world of a fashion.
Scarred Lands I fell in love with many a moon ago when I was running a campaign spin on the Nameless Legion (Dragon magazine). It's a bit more gritty and real then FR and the survivalist mentality just seems to spur some great RPing when I've experienced it. Reminds of a few of the Dark Sun campaigns I was in.
And though its not straight up fantasy/D&D based, Shadowrun has been a fun and favorite campaign setting of mine in the past. If there are others campaign settings slinking about on the edges I'd love to hear about them. Always game to try something new. | | You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? | Playing in an Oriental Adventures/Rogukan campaign for the past three years. It works out pretty well as a number of us are big fans of the genre. We just need some of the monks to pick up a little bit more of the high flying/jumping mindset to go with their combat styles. Currently my samurai has probably made more "flying" leaping type attacks on foes. Sometimes that is the only way to get a good shot at the foe when they are big or behind things. The two dominant players (ones who like to try and control the direction of things and think big picture for the party) are also playing the Imperial Sorceror and the Noble Samurai. The Sorceror deals with the rest of society while the Samurai tends to call the tactical situations, which fits well with the players and the characters at the same time.
In my experience the most frustrating gaming occurs when the character and player are not even close to being a match. The wimpy mousy quiet player trying to play the boisterous Barbarian, or the crazy non-planning player who just wants to fight things trying to handle leader duties and deal with the powerful NPC's. A shift in roles can be enjoyable at times, but the other players also need to shift their play as well to cover the other bases.
A subset of the playing group has begun another game (set in a combo Greek/Gaelic setting) and in that one I have taken a much lower profile character. A Cleric of Artemis, who is gruff and coarse and not a real good dinner companion. Not a leader type in any sense. Will see how this works out. | | Built the addition for this addiction, now on to the "gaming table" project.... http://www.maxminis.com/hw_list.asp?user=Zenako last updated 29 May 2006 Set Status: in a nutshell = all of all In Process trades 0), (Sig last updated 05/29/06) 300 plus Completed Trades -

| The main campaign I work on is Legend of the Shining Jewel based in our own world (after we were chased out of FR). It is not published......YET.
I also use Arcanis, 7th Sea R&K and am getting back into Dragonstar (who I must agree with Testament (I think it was) in that the World Book (galaxy guide) pretty much sucked, but with the good writers of Living Dragonstar and hopefully with the new game, I grew to enjoy.)

| my wife has been really into the Arcanis setting right now, so besides my homebrew and some occasional greyhawk...it has been all Arcanis.
It is pretty cool, basically the roman era of fantasy so lots of maximus and names like that.

| Arcanis is a d20 setting, for D&D. One and a half books are needed, the Player's Guide to Arcanis is essential, and the Codex Arcanis, which is nothing but setting info. The Codex is 3.0, although that makes little difference, as all the rules info is updated in the Player's Guide.
I'm unsure of price, although the PGtA is fairly pricey as a hardback. Annoying too, since the binding is very average. There's other books for it too, there's Ssethregore: In the Coils of the Serpent Empire, which is all about the malevolent Ssethregoran empire, the evil snake and lizard men who once ruled Onara, and intend to again. There's also Legacy of Damnation, which is all about the Dark-Kin race and the Sealed Lands, those cursed realms ruled by the imprisoned Fiends. Then there's my fave, Nishanpur: The City of Secrets, which is about the sinister city of that name, in the throughly evil lands of Canceri. It also features an adventure. There's other books too, which may be harder to find, Carnival of Swords, which is a book similar to Nishanpur about Old Coryan, and The Bloody Sands of Sicaris, about the frontier city of Sicaris.

| We've recently been playing Oriental Adventures as well. We're using a Rokugan with a few different clans and fewer restrictions on what is and isn't in Rokugan. On an odd note, however, has anyone noticed that Samurai classes generally stink? The only one I really like is the Master Samurai from the old Sword and Fist book. The other two are a weak fighter (with a limited ability to enchant his own weapons) and a two-weapon fighter.

The main thing I have noticed about the Samurai classes from WotC is that they really have nothing to do with being a samurai.

| Hey Ghendar,
here is a pretty good source of information for the Living Arcanis campaign including downloads and stuff. http://www.onaraonline.org/ Testament is right on about the books. You really only need the Players Guide to Arcanis to get into it. After you play, there are other regional specific texts comming out...the Canceri book is not long before the shelves.
The PGtA retails for 40 bucks but I am sure if you are frugal you could find it for less.
hope that helps,

| Right now I am playing in Eberron, but in the past I played in Rokugan it was fun and different, to different for some as the campaign quickly fell apart as some people insisted on playing characters that clearly were against the spirt of the settings(a goblin thief with samurai,wu jen and such). I also dmed a campaign in the Kingdoms of Kalamar for a while I loved that setting. Ran a group from 1st level to 6th in the Renaaria bay area before the game broke up for a while, by time we all got back together someone else wanted to dm and everybody wanted to try the new eberron setting and we are still all there. I liked the Kalamar Renaaria bay because you could have sea adventures, jungle adventures, desert adventures and just regular wilderness/town advenures all in the same general area and it didn't feel forced. | | | |
