No. 3.5 wasn't a big enough change to warrent new books I agree but I notice I can use my 3.0 books in my 3.5 campaign. | |

Because Im about 90% sure 4th edition is when I quit the hobby. I have to much 3rd edition product to change systems. Id just keep on playing 3rd and would stop putting money in WotC's pockets.
Huh. I have Dungeon mags from the single digits and regularly use them in my 3.5 campaign. I just can't see the logic behind this attitude (unless it is the standard 'screw da man' one). | |

| D&D has always been a very clunky system compared to many other games. 3.x took some major steps in correcting it, but it still doens't have the same feel as many other games. Combat is slower, magic is clumsier and characters are highly restricted. I think if they make a 4.0, they better make a whole new magic system that works fluidly and lets characters remain versitile and adaptable.
For instance, those who have played the older Shadowrun games will know what I'm talking about. Their magic system, while complicated, was also very open ended. If there wasn't a rule for something, your character could just "try it", roll some dice and the GM said yay or nay. In D&D, if it's not a spell, tough.
I like a lot of spells and if they get rid of the good old staples, I would be disappointed, but I think it could be made a lot better too. | |

| I've always prayed that D&D would someday take a cue from White-wolf, particulary Mage. I love the open ended fluidity of it all. No classes to bog down doing what you want to specialize in. And the open ended magic system in D&D would be most amazing. Not sure I will ever truly see that though, which is sad.

I have to agree with PatEllis. The potential for min/maxing and disparity between characters is huge. Skill systems are generally great for solo RPG projects like computer games, and roleplaying heavy games too. But a combat-focused game like Dungeons and Dragons could very easily be broken with a skill based system. I'm not saying that it would be impossible to balance it, just extremely difficult. If Jonothan Tweet and Skip Williams can create a new modular based RPG system that's well balanced I will consider 4E a massive achievement, but I won't hold my breath. It's simply a very difficult project.

You actually a minority there.
Most of us really dont like PDFs over books. Having a full shelf to feel proud of and pooring through the pages of a book is always better then reading off a screen.
Totally agree ... I sooner have a book and pay the extra money then have crappy pdf's. Its more professional looking and plus I rarley use my computer in the game itself. I use it more for lookup after game hours.D&D being nothing but laptops on the table would suck!! Pizza and beer stains on the character sheets is classic fun! | |

I agree. The DM in the Tues. game I play in uses a laptop, even rolling with it. It makes my dice sad. There's nothing like the shooka, shooka and clattering of rolling dice.[^]
