Nothing to do with love or the heartstrings. More of a knowledge is power and I don't think we should share type happening. Was having fun playing a rather rigid explorer type. Think Indiana Jonesish but a dwarf [:p] Ranger/Rogue/Royal Explorer, lawful neutral.

Our party went hunting for some ancient tablets that were told to contain secrets/knowledge/answers to a perplexing rise of a strange gray skinned dwarf-like menace (homebrew campaign and Druegar were unheard of even to current day dwarves). After much searching, heartache and bloodshed we found the ancient dwarven hold and one of the tablets.

Turned out only my dwarf could read the ancient dwarven script (wizard could have with a spell but since I could do it without much effort he gladly let me shine and saved his powers). Anyhoo, long story short is he finds out about the ancient bloodline tie between the druegar and normal dwarves but to use the ancient magics to cull and subdue their rise it would have reprecussions and effect ALL dwarves, not just druegar.

Second tablet we eventually found gave more details in to the whole affair and turns out the dwarves of ancient times could not bear or bring themselves to use the magic so instead they cast their evil cousins in to the realms beneath and sealed them away. By now my PC was having some serious doubts and was far from eager to complete their assigned mission and began holding back some info.

A small jump to the current air of politics in the realms of that world and humans far outstrip any of the other races. Of the party my dwarf was part of 4 of the 7 were human, with a half-elf and aasimar making up the other two non-humans. All six of them were still gung-ho on completing the mission and using the ancient magic to stop the druegar menace despite the clause and historical reference that the dwarves of old feared using it and found another way.

My PC began twarting certain things subtle-like so that our party's goal of using the ancient spells would never see light. One thing lead to another, then another, then another. Started taking a bit more drastic steps and eventually the DM made some secret rolls, scribbled some notes and passed them to me so only I knew that his machinations and selfish bent had slowly ebbed him over to LE.

Never killed any of my companions but did one time cause a spell to go haywire and a summoned creature got out of hand and caused some major pain. Rest of the party never guessed I'd turned black on them. Never did get to finish the whole story as RL caused a break in sessions and we never could get back in the flow on this one.

You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing?

I've had a few "heroic" characters that have skirted the line a bit, but never fallen completly. Quite a few of the other "evil" characters I've played do tend to have semi-noble backstories.

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

Well way back in the days I had a good cleric following a good god until one day he died. This was in the Forgotten Realms so I was waiting on the fugue plains when I brought back to life.

My stay on the fugue plain had a drastic effect on him and change of gods came into effect as he started worshipping Myrkul (while being an evil god not all aspects of him were evil) But worship of the death god quickly shifted him to a more neutral view on life.

The problem of Myrkul is that Myrkul was also the Undead god and the use of undead not looked down upon. Also when constantly meeting with other members of the church more often than not, they were 'evil' over the next few levels this poor cleric started accepting the darker teachings of Myrkul until one day he became evil.

Not only did he go over to being evil, but when Myrkul was killed, he refused to accept it, so much so that now-a-days he's completely insane. I still keep him around but as a NPC now.

Unfortunately this all happened so long ago that I can no longer remember everything that drove him to his 'Evil' lifestyle.

So I had a LN Dwarven Wizard who really just wanted to perfect his craft as a Smith and creating magical weapons. We just happened to live in an Archpeligo dominated by a LE Mageocracy that had essentially "conquered" the Dwarven people by maniplating the Clan Elders into swearing Oaths of Fealty. A dwarf, once he or she swears an oath will keep it no matter what.

As the adventures continued, Nikolai determined that the Magocracy needed to fall, and he determined the most efficient routes to accomplish his goals. Effeciency meant that morality was moved to the back of his mind more and more often.

After awhile, he drfited into LE. I did not argue with that and continued on my path. My most blatantly evil acts were unwitnessed(or at least no witnesses were left behind), so the Chamion of a NG god who could detect evil as a Paladin w/in the party never had cause to check me out until the very end of the campaign.

Nikolai retired an honored hero of the new Empire and Freed Dwarven people. But was politley asked to travel far away after.
