| | Oh, for any of you who saw my previous post on the assault of the illithid city, this is the precursor leading up to that. They need the rings to aid them in their mission to the illithid city. | | Give me more MIND FLAYERS! | |

| | How about a character stuck in a mirror of life trapping owned by the tomb tappers, or simply exists in the compound (or whatever it is)? | How about someone else going on the same mission as the first group and runs into them. They might even start out as opponents before they realize they can benefit by teaming up.
I have a similar problem. I have 3 new players joining my next session and this is how I plan on introducing them into the group. Both groups will be in the same town on what they think are diffrent missions that will dovetail into each other. Both groups will need to join up to complete there missions which they will find out are linked to one over all goal.

| | How about when they find the rings, have the new guy already there with all of them. | New characters should fall from the sky, like Rufus in Dogma.
Failing that, you can retcon them in: they were with the party the whole time, just not doing very much.
More seriously, look at the character's background, and try to use some of that as a reason for him teaming up with the party. Maybe the new character has had his life ruined by mindflayers, and he runs into the party while on his quest for vengeance.

| It is always tricky to introduce a new character into a group in the middle of a mission. Our group is a little paranoid and have encountered doplegangers and illusions of friends often enough to take very little at face value. The last time someone tried to join us in the middle of a mission, we almost killed them.
I kind of like the whole Conan thing... find him crucified out in the middle of nowhere. Heal him or kill him, it's up to them. The big problem with putting someone in a bad situation and having your party rescue him (or her) is that quite often the party won't consider that person an equal (full share of any loot) and they will really have to work hard to be a full party member.

| If the new character's class is a rogue then well...he got trapped there and now, besides trying to find a way out he is there to get loot; have the group find him as he is about to pocket some stuff.
Wizards and Sorcerers could be looking for the magical items as well, but have them come with summons and a couple of hired help. Or they are just traveling between planes, things go wrong, here we are!
Fighters/Paladins/Clerics/Druids/Rangers could be indeed trapped in whatever fits your adventure best. Maybe whomever gave the "quest" to the party had not much confidence and has sent this one individual to follow them (works best with rangers and druids).
Many posibilities and it all depends on the character class and aligment, those will better help you tailor something somewhat believable and not cheese. | | Trades >> Completed: 49 | Bad: Ø | Pending: 0 | Trade & talk Live on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis

Conan's different though...the rest of the "party" already knew him before he was crucified on the Tree of Woe. It wasn't exactly introducing a new character. | | "Why am I all sticky and naked? Did I miss something fun?" -Vindicated champion of Tordek, Dwarf Champion

| It looks like I am going with the mirror of life trapping idea. In the DMG it states that if it is "full" and another comes within its magic one individual is thrown out of the mirror. I think I will have an npc get caught into the mirror and have the new player spring out. Then it will be the groups decision whether they try and figure out the command word to release the others (which can be a side mission in its own right). The new player is a sorcerer and basically could have been caught in the mirror a long time ago and thus never have travelled to this pretty dangerous demi-plane. He is coming in at very low level and it would seem odd, without hired hands for him to be here. Plus it is nearly impossible other than a specific key or a tomb tapper allowing entrance to get into their tomb. Tomb Tappers wouldn't necessarily just allow any old 1st level character access to their area.
Thanks for all the help on this. It has been very useful! | | Give me more MIND FLAYERS!

I actually did something not *too* far from this recently. The previous session, the game ended just after a fight with a mummy on a stone bridge over a darkened cavern. The fight ended when the Monk pushed the almost dead mummy off the bridge, off into the darkness.
The game picked up with the characters hearing muffled groans from below. They descended a rope to investigate, imagining that they would have to finish off the mummy. Instead they found that the mummy had *landed* on a Barbarian that had gotten lost in the cavern! The Barbarian was a newly-introduced character.
