| | Armor and other magic items resize, weapons don't. If you want to alter things for your game you can, but most players react . . . poorly. | | It's deja vu all over again. | |

This is actually not entirely true. Armor of the same size category will resize, i.e. full plate +1 will fit a skinny elf or a burly half-orc just as easily. A suit of Large full plate + 1 will fit an Ogre or a hill giant, but not a Medium sized PC.
Wondrous items and rings will resize to fit, regardless.
So yes a PC can determine if a ring is magical by trying it on and seeing if it resizes. He could also use a 0th level spell to do the same thing, so magic items resizing isnt giving him information he couldn't find out easily.
Another thing to note is if you have cursed items in your campaign, PCs will be reticent to randomly try things on to see if its magical given the small chance that it will have an undesirable effect.
Hope this helps. | | Sanity is a one trick pony, my friend, . . .but when you're good and crazy the sky is the limit.

| Just remember... cursed magic items resize too. So just trying every thing on isn't the best method. Like Mrfurious said... detect magic is a zero level spell that can be invaluable and I have never known a wizard/cleric/sorcerer/druid that didn't have it.

| | Yes, the possibility of a cursed item should deter that technique nicely. Give a macho guy playing a fighter a girdle that he thinks is for strength but really is a girdle of masculinity/femininity and make him play a girl for a while, with NPCs making lewd comments all the time, and the PCs won't be likely to try something unidentified. | | E-mail | Have/Want List | Reference thread "Whatever you do, don't drop a blade barrier on a troll."

| If you want to avoid the super easy-ID of magic rings, have them change to fit only once the ring has been identified as magic...Kind of like a secondary ability that has to be conciously employed.
You could also give vague size descriptions about rings until the players try them on. If a ring taken from a Hobgoblin is claimed by the Halfling Rogue, claim that the ring came from the Hobgob's little finger, and that it might fit the Halfling's thumb or middle finger. After it's put on, you could say that "it seems loose, but you think it will stay on" or something like that. I think that should take care of most problems until your PCs take on an Ogre or something similar.
Just because the rings resize a bit doesn't mean that the fit has to be perfect, or even that the change is instant or noticable. | | Champion of the Werewolf Lord, Knight of Anything Duergar, and Squire of Things Gnollish List reset with the start of previews for each new set...got Chainmail®?

| | I guess I never thought about the idea that a PC would know a ring was magic just by trying it on and watching it resize but yeah that's a very good point. I'll have to try that out on our DM sometime when we find that or armor. | | Jason Slingerland

| There is nothing wrong with just trying on or using magic items without having them identified. It's even listed as one of the ways to identify items in the DMG.
Why do people have to jump to the cursed item card so quickly? There's no reason for the DM to hose a player just because they didn't use a 0 or 1st level spell on something.
Cursed items should have a reason for exsisting beyond just hosing a player. A magic sword that gives a penalty to your Will save, sure (a Wizard doesn't want the Fighter to get too cocky). A girdle that changes your sex, not so much (other than the cliche insano Wizards).
