If you like Eberron, check out the recent article on the Lords of Dust in Dragon (not sure of the #). They're about as epic as they come.

The problem with Epic level charcters is that they generally have outgrown the ability of normal campaign environments to handle them. Power growth is not linear, more like exponential and that is hard to integrate into a coherent world without becoming unbalanced. That being said, it in some ways is not unlike a Superhero Campaign with Superman, Hulk, etc and lots of normals. Just need to focus on the BBEG's and ignore the rest.

Problem is, what do you publish to support this dicotomy. Just the BBEG's to be integrated into a campaign? Perhaps some skill/feats? They did that with the ELH. Same thing happened with older versions of D&D, there were vanishingly few modules created for high level play and most of those were hardly worth the bother. The Bloodstone mines were perhaps the most useful, but even there the range of character levels given was absurd, I mean seriously 18th -100th level! I did use goodly portions of that module as part of my underdark campaign, and the PCs were no where near that level and handled most of it without too much trouble.

There is just not enough of a market to support that level of play to justify the time and money to develop modules from what I see.

Built the addition for this addiction, now on to the "gaming table" project....

There was a recent Dungeon magazine adventure for characters level thrity-something....dont remember the issue #.

And you raised a good question...what is more used...Epic Campaigns or Campaigns with Psionics?

I would guess Psionics is MUCH more used than Epic. But thats just my guess.

Gotta go with the Count...I think psionics is much more used than Epic. Personally, I find psionics to be an interesting mechanic, whereas I start getting bored with characters above level 11 or so, much less 20.

I'm a big lover of the psionics myself. It always seemed new and fresh to me in all its forms, though I admit that 3.5 is the first time it seems like it is actually balanced in play as well as fun. I can't wait til this weekend when I get the first shot at running my new Kalashtar Soulknife.

I just don't have any interest in psionics, and my character is now 21st level. We have about 8 prestige classes total. My DM has to spend hours to stat out NPCs. The spell examples are limited and less effective than 9th level spells.

I just don't think that one book of fluff without even much crunch would be that difficult for them to produce. Hell, if they're able to do Magic of Eberron (which I realize is now a core campaign world), a world with only about 8 spells listed in its campaign source book, couldn't they give us one supplement dedicated to epic level play? At least one thing for 3.5? I mean the original push was pretty big (with hints in the FRCS beforehand)...why have they just let it fizzle?

I have never played in a campaign for very long that went above 20th level... it just wasn't that much fun. Sure it's very satisfying to run a character from 1st level up, but after running up to 20+ levels... it starts to get boring and I am ready for a change. Never been a fan of starting at high levels either.

Psionics can actually be fun especially for a GM. Expanding the powers of the Mind Flayers alone is worth taking a look at.

I love psionics but, for me, epic play is meh.
The highest campaign my group ever got to is 14th level we usually get bored at about 10th level and start over.

I only played one epic game. The Epic level handbook had just come out and we all wanted to try it we spent weeks building the perfect 22th level characters in preparation for an epic campaign and after two games we quit, to many choices and not much roleplaying it just got boring.

Occasionally we will run a game or two for high level throw away characters but we have the same problem too many choises slow battles down and not much roleplaying when you can take on almost the whole kingdom with out breaking a sweat.

Well, it's the kind of problem that you bring up which I think they should address in a new book. How to streamline combat and feat and skill selection.

I'm playing in a campaign that started about 3 yrs ago. There was one DM from about 1-4 levels. I took over until about 14th level. And now, the characters are all at 21st. Our DM is great, and the game is going really strong. Some combats take forever, but our characters have been doing a lot of planar travelling, and it's all been really interesting. I just wish there were more options provided by WOTC to help us make quicker decisions.

Once you get to Epic levels, I think it is up to the DM to encourage much more role playing. My brother took our friend's 23rd level Paladin and framed him for murder. He's a Paladin, so he has to obey the law, and he gets banished to a monastary for 3 years, without armor, weapons, magic, etc. Makes things kind of interesting.

I have a campaign where a high level Ranger kills a wizard with a White dragon and finds this large gem on a pedastal. He takes it of course, not realizing that the gem is part of a spell focus that keeps the weather cold. Not a big deal except that it has been that way for hundreds of years, and people in the surrounding communities depend on that climate for their way of life. Now the question is, how does the Ranger get the gem back to where it belongs, knowing it is part of an evil organizations design??

I ran an epic campaign where I took away all of the characters stuff (Magic items, weapons, armor, everything but the clothes on their backs, and also I took away spells) Then I ran a game where they had to really on their skills and roleplaying to get thru it. The appreciated it very much and I think it went more smoothly than most epic stuff I have run. I did ofcourse give them their stuff back at the end.
