And hence, he probably only buys singles of OTHER minis which interest him.

Sadly, the minis we get most of are low level creatures, and when you're in an RPG, you tend to zip through the lower level (fewer XPs needed to level).
When you get up into the L4-8 area, you need larger foes, which generally means rare figures that are hard to get hold of.
Foertunately, the recent trend towards large uncommons is helping out a bit with midrange encounters.
Personally, I like the demons and devils for mid-high level encounters, but most of those are rares.
Giants are also all rares, as are the older dragons.
To use your most of minis (commons) you need to run a lot of low level stand-alone adventures.
Such is life.

I have always been here.

ok, the goblin adept is available, and I have one. But I would rather have lots of basic goblins, orcs and gnolls. I have ordered singles online of gobins and such, but I dont think I should be forced to buy into the secondary market for the most basic monsters. Kobolds at least have been in abundance! But if I could custom order a set of D&D archtypes I would want;
rat swarms, ghouls, large vipers, and lizardfolk...
I could go on but will stop before you get tired of me.

They have been doing a good job lately of balancing the sets for RPG and for minis. I agree on the large uncommon bit. As a DM I always love being able to have multiples of those to use for encounters.

I would like to see the slightly up the amount of core content humanoids in each set. The commons should almost ALL be the guys you want multiples of in multiple poses (orcs, lizard men, skeletons, gnolls, hobgoblins, etc) They have some but are maybe just a tiny bit below where they should be.

Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested!

Actually, 3.5 has the means to make minis of "low-level creatures" useful for longer, since monsters can be enhanced with templates, extra HD, etc. Also, humanoids can have levels, so you could conceivably use the orc and goblin minis all the way to epic levels. That's one of the coolest things about 3.5, IMNSHO. I would never have dreamed of throwing orcs against 9th-level characters in previous editions, but now I'm wondering if the orcs will be too tough...

Honestly, I don't want them to put out a ton more orcs or goblins. I've been collecting since Harbringer and I have more of them then I will ever use. I want to see new monsters, not a constant rehash of the same old thing.

The secondary market is what you have to do.

Those of us who have been there since Harbinger dont need a goblin, orc, drow, dwarf warrior and kobold in every set to cater to newbies.

Im sorry but that what the secondary market is for.

A goblin in every 3rd set is good enough for everyone to be satisfied.

Counts right!!!
I spend more on the secondary market then I do with cases and boosters that way I get the right amount of what I want from a set and not too much of the other. I take it your not a collector so secondary market is the way too go. Ebay will be your friend!! [:)]

To answer your question...A "Core Set" of miniatures is a great idea for newbies.

Now for skirmish I couldnt say....But an RPG Core Mini set would be sweet.

The D&D basic game was a good start...but it really didnt have enought mosters. 2 Orcs, a single Trog ect..
And buying a second set is not cost effective.

If there were a Core Set that was always available I's say it would be a big box with like 30 minis in it.
4 Adventurers (Regdar, Lidda ect)
4 Orcs
4 Goblins
3 Zombies
4 Skeletons
5 Kobolds
1 Ogre
5 Dire Rats

It would be sweet if a pack like that was always available for new DMs to scoop up.

Warhammer, LOTR.... etc etc

DDM is acollectable game. What you are trying to do falls outside the mandate of such. As other have stated they can have the same creatures in every set. They have already done the core set. It was called Harbinger. If WOTC did the kind of non-random packs your talking about it would cut into booster sales. Then they would have two product lines without sufficent volume in either.

For large numbers of orc and goblins buy a LOTR set. For undead Warhammer.

This isn't too bad, esp for $16.49:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0786934093/103-9124737-0951029?v=glance&n=283155&v=glance

The box comes with the following 16 Minitures

Adventurers: Aramil, Eberk, Regdar, Lidda

Monsters: Dire Rat, 4 Kobolds, 2 Skeletons, Wolf Skeleton ,Black Dragon , 2 Orc Warriors, Troglodyte

CHAMPION OF THE REDSPAWN ARCANISS

One day I will have to explain to my kids why they have to pay for their own college, but when they realize that I have a full set of Harbinger it should make sense to them...

Yup Count that would be cool..maybe not me now cause I have all that..but for new RPG DM yes it would be helpful. Unless it had a dumb looking ogre not the armored one. Then I would be in love!
