What's the source for the Half-Golem? Was it Fiend Folio or MM2?

It looks kinda fun and cool. I would like to have my character become one. What are the resrictions, benefits, bonuses, downsides, to becoming a half-golem??? (If it matters at all, my character is a Thri-Kreen Fighter)
The problem with becoming a half golem is if you fail a will save along the way you lose your character. As you attach new limbs to your character you have to make a will save that increases with each limb. If you fail one your character becomes a NE construct, he keep the memories of his former life but becomes murderous and cruel the new creature seeks to slaughter as many flesh creatures as possible.
If you become a half Golem you take on some of the traits of the Golem type you attach to your self both good and bad. For example a half flesh golem gains DR 5/silver but also gains berserk ( a bit like rage but you can't turn it off or pick your target and if your a barbarian the bonuses and penalties stack).
Thri-kreen can become half golems but as a DM I wouldn't let a PC become one without massive backstory to support it and I would have to increase his ECL.

| Thanks guys. Can you make a half-golem customized, like when you make a real golem??? Like say an emerald golem. | | Disipline is the only way to overcome chaos. That would be up to your DM. The basic template in MM2 allows, as I recall, only Stone, Iron, Flesh and Clay Half-Golems. A DM would have to do a bit of work to set up any other type of Golem.

| I should also add that I would never allow as Half-Golem PC in a campaign I was DMing. Too many issues with the abilites as noted above.

| If your DM allows a Half-Golem template, then I don't see a problem is the Thayvian Golems being used. Quite possible a Thayian wizard may even be responsible for no other reason then as a experiment (Just like the original Construct Frankenstein.)
The rules introduced in MM2 do need some work, and is one reason why they should update MM2 to 3.5 standards. The likelyhood of a fighter having this done and not turning into an unthinking killer is remote. In a novel series one character somehow survived this process three times?! Your character will be lucky just to survive it once. | | "I was sittin' here eatin' my muffin, drinkin' my coffee, replayin' the incident in my head, when I had what alcoholics refer to as a moment of clarity." - Jules Winnfield Sales/Trades Bad (1): Ironfist Boulderbender Trades/Sales completed (8.): Danthl, Dafrca, Garyaxe, qillan_dvra, realmaster, Vandal_Savage, cavedweller, unearthed arcana. That sounds like a cool and interesting novel. What is/are the book(s)called?? Is it Forgotten Realms or Dragonlance or what have you??? (I really need a new book/series to read. The one I'm reading now is really going off course and falling apart and becoming very uninteresting quickly.) | | Disipline is the only way to overcome chaos. | | A web-enhancement from Wizards also allows a few more half-golems -- including Brass. I once played a brass half-golem and it was pretty broken. We were in a situation which should have been hopeless (wave after wave of opponents) but the half-golem had the right immunities and other powers such that he was essentially invulnerable. The DM finally gave up and said "after lots of fighting, you win." And then I had to promise not to play that PC anymore. [}:)]

Its from the Forgotten Realms trilogy (well only two out so far) about the Dragon Rage. I first book is called The Rage, book two is The Rite. One of the main characters is a half-iron golem who was mauled as a child by dragons (lost arm/leg) and a wizard took him in and helped along the way outfitting him as he grew.
I'd have to agree the story works much better then the actual rules they have setup in the MM2 to actually implement such a transformation. | | You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing?

THAT'S THE BOOK??!?!?!?! That's the series/books I'm reading now. The first book was cool. The second book slipped up a bit and is foreshadowing the third book will suck WAY worse. I don't want to read about a half-golem (How do I put this) getting it on with a dragon in human form. I really am looking forward to getting a new book/series to read. Man, is it hard to find a good book though. (I never got into the drizzt books)
Does anyone have any good books they're reading now that they could recomend to me?? | | Disipline is the only way to overcome chaos. Champion of Half-Golems Knight of Golems "This world is made for love and peace" - Trigun "anyway..shadow..you've figured women out. KUDOS." - raye_kino16

| try the belgarath series by David Eddings, one of the best fanasy series I have ever read.
Recently I have read the Binding Stone by don bassingthwaithe set in the Eberron world. It was great the author really did his homework he got the setting down cold. The characters were set up with eberron in mind and all had interesting backstorys that were explored in the book. He also did a good job on spellcasting and PC building he kept the characters within their levels i.e. they didn't suddenly have a leap in power just for a plot device.

| | If your looking for a FR series try the Everis Cale Trilogy, book three was just released so I haven't read that one yet. I really enjoyed the first two though. What????? Hmm I've got to check these books out. I wrote an RPGA Living Greyhawk module set in Veluna with a kid(NPC) with that background about 2-3 years ago. The kids mom (a wizard) made him into a 1/2 Golem to save his life... the kids name was Robbie... I couldn't help myself. | | Lord Storm | |

| | Hmmm....instead of looking at the half golem template you may want to look at something similar. Monte Cook's "Chaositech" would allow you to simulate a half golem, but it is a little more balanced IMO. | | Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.--Dylan Thomas
