Even if it had 1 hit point left....I wouldnt have sent my familiar to attack an ogre out of fear of the AoO.

Like you said learning the rules better changes the game :)

Forunately, the DM at the time was just as new as I was. He forgot to give the AoO against the flying creature.

Either that or one of the characters in the party had already provoked an AoO that round.

It's been so long that the only thing I remember is that my familiar did not get hit by an AoO and was successful in his "dive bomb" attack.

I love when things like that happen. We just brought in a new player into our game who is a 3rd level ranger. The rest of the group is around 10. Anyway, just yesterday it was great when his one hit was the one which killed the tomb tapper!!! It makes the new comer feel important and adds to the enjoyment in the game. Did I fudge the dice in his favor? Nah! Never! [)]

I was DMing a group of 5 4th level adventurers, they were trying to sneak into an old monastary taken over by a large group of orcs with a couple of ogres back up. The Orcs were using slaves to work a nearby mine so one of the tasks was to free the slaves.
They managed to sneak onto the roof of the main building silently before the alarm was sprung(due to there own rash actions) and all the forces came to bear on them, instead of a number of small battles they ended up fighting almost everything at once.
The sorcerer and his cat familar got seperated from the rest of the group(on the roof of an entirely diffrent building) the two of them managed to hold off reenforcements to keep the main group from beeing totally surrounded and the cat killed 4 orcs all by itself while not taking a point of damage. It was kind of hilarious they couldn't hit that cat and it was criting them all over the place.

Three adventures come to the end of a cave. There is a hole in the celing with a chain hanging down. Now we are a little nervous about climbing the chain as it will put us in a dangerous spot if there is anything in the room above.

So Garak my LG human fighter suggest to our wizard that he let his squirrel familar run up the chain to take a look. I mean who would bother to attack a squirrel right.

The wizard never did forgive my character.

Yes I am Gelatinous.
