From a balance standpoint, four CR 4 creatures is a heck of a lot easier than a single CR 8 creature. Especially when they encounter something of that level four times in a row. If you want a tough adventure that progresses slowly, go with a single creature. If you want to characters to get through the room fast go with four lower CR creatures at once.

For your extra-dimensional creatures you could try the Pseudonatural Creature from Complete Arcane, or the Half-Farspawn template from Lords of Madness. Here's a link to the excerpt:

What levels are the PCs? How many are there? What classes do they have?

One great point about doing your own adventures is that you know the answers to those questions, so you don't have to design blindly.

Cheers!

I don't have a group yet. I'm not done creating the adventure so there's no point. I am going to hopefully get the PCs, when they get to this part of the adventure, will be around level 6, 7, or 8.

And I'm looking for 4 creatures that will put up a good fight, I'm not looking for 4 boss monsters (That half-farspawn is a bit to high a CR and I'm to lazy to dumb down creatures.

Disipline is the only way to overcome chaos.

Hello,

Speaking as a DM for many years, while I enjoy writing up adventures I always have the group first, and then design the adventure. The group you are playing with will influence what you want to design for them. If the group is large (more than 4 PCs) you can throw more at them.

Merric's advice is good as well, those points will need to be considered once you do know the compostion of your group.

Cheers [:)]

Just throwing ideas out there for you since the adventure looks to be in a hot spot. All of the below list could be done as groups or as more singular, higher CR battles...

Mephit (group of them - fire/smoke/ash whatever your taste)
Ash Rat (group of them)
Ashworm (x2 = CR4)
Either a Half-elemental or Half-Janni (bit higher CR but good stuff)
Lava Ooze
Fire Bat (group of them)
Pyrokeneticist (if you're open to Psionics, would be different for the PCs)

You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing?

i'm going to agree with omand and merric. while it can be alot of fun to write out adventures like a novel or like wizo does it with all the pertinent info all laid out, it is much easier to make a flowchart of bulletpoint progression that is easier to change as your PCs throw you wierd responses to utterly normal situations.

when wizards writes an encounter, it is balanced for all kinds of different party types, but also scaleable... the basic information of your adventure sounds really great, but the particulars are really something that you'd have to decide on the spot. how many spells do they have left, what magic items have they recently receieved, what are the weaknesses and strengths of your party. an easy way to narrow down your possibilities is to go review the "monster niches" article on the DnD site. (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dd/20051028a) you already mentioned that you don't want "boss monsters." and thats perfect. but do you want a 4 creature mob? 4 spoilers for your party's specific strength? do you want a creature for each member, or have to take them down as a team? all very good questions when designing any encounter.

some other things to consider. what do you do when they try to dispell the barriers, jaunt through them, fly above the creatures, sunder the summoning circles (if 1 appears at a time, they'll get a clue by the 2nd guy)... don't get to constrained by your predesigned ideas, or your players will feel out of control. also keep in mind that if you're on the elemental plane of fire, water magic is impeded, while fire magic is improved. dang, way too much for such a little question...
