I used to have a subscription to Dungeon magazine back in the 90's for about 5 years. I ended up letting it lapse when the adventures I liked became few and far between. I considered picking it back up with 3.0 but had enough of my own material to last a while. When I did finally check it out, it was mixed with polyhedron and only had 2 adventures per issue. Ugggh!

Well all of the changed recently. I picked up a few of the Age of Worms issues and was incredibly impressed with the quality of the adventures as well as the extra content provided. I bought the first 5 over the counter, and the quality stayed high. They managed to bring me back into the fold. The adventures look great, are very interesting, and the extra content is perfect stuff for a DM interested in enhancing his game. If you haven't taken a look, I strongly suggest it.

I've been buying them over the counter since the Age of Worms started back in May or June. I haven't been able to scrape up $40 at a time and not spend it on minis instead [)] Plus the wife doesn't notice $7 a month. Anyway, I've been very happy with the content, adventures and articles alike. There's lots of great stuff to poach, borrow, and steal if not just use whole and my group is enjoying the weekly strugle against death that is the Age of Worms. Eric Mona and the entire staff at Paizo as well as their freelancers are doing great work.

I did the math comparisons. The subscription wins every time. Forget paying per issue, which I've run into problems finding in town before. Some issue may sell out faster for whatever reason.

Cheaper, faster, earlier, no extra trip to the store? Sold!

Subscription all the way. You pay about half of what you do over the counter.
Unless YOU LIKE PAYING MORE THAN YOU HAVE TO, get a subscription!!

The subscription is on my Christmas list and will be the first thing I buy if I don't get it. I've just been dragging my feet, I only get $40 a paycheck 'allowance.'[)]

Even though it was something I have been requesting of Dungeon for years by sending letters..I was never heard.

Then Dungeon gets this "great idea" to do an adventure path with Shackeled City and its a HUGE hit so now they are doing "Age of Worms".

If only they listened to me sooner....Oh well at least they are doing it now...Dungeon is the best it has ever been in the magazine's history.

I love my Dungeon subscription, but it's hard to get them every month and know I can't check out the Age of Worms area because my DM might be just a tad bit upset ([}:)] Ghendar I'm looking at you.)

Subscription is the way to go. I usually get them in the mail a month after they hit the shelves down here in Oz, but so few stores actually carry the magazines, and those that do get very little stock.
The only way for me to lock in the issues was through subscription.
I can endure the snailmail postal lag.
AoW is definitely worth it, and there is a heck of a lot more material besides.

I have always been here.

I've been comtemplating picking up a subscription everytime we go to Gencon. For those of you that do have it. Do you find yourselves pulling ideas from it a lot?

I used to never really want to use the adventures, but might steal an NPC or a map. Now I find the adventures really cool and want to incorperate a lot of them into my campaign. I'm sure part of it is me getting older and lazy with my campaign, but a good part of it is the increased quality of the adventures.

Cool, I will have to look into it then. Not sure if I would end up using the entire adventures but I very well might grab NPC's, items, and baddies from it. That would pay for itself then. Thanks.

I enjoy paying more buying it off the rack. My FLGS holds one for me so I support him and have a reason to visit the store at least once a month. But that's just me.

Have to agree that the magazine seems to have really improved, I've been buying issues here and three and with the recent AoW and the three part Forgotten Realms adventure, I've been buying it monthly now.

I almost ALWAYS buy off the shelf as I don't mind paying 20% more to support my store. In this case, Paizo makes the same either way (probably more actually) and you get the magazine 3-4 weeks before it hits the shelf. Its the only thing I don't buy directly from the store. Still makes me feel guilty for not supporting the place where I get to play every week.

I had heard Dungeon beefed up its content with articles about running games and campaigns. Is it still just adventures or are there other tools and articles now?

It's mostly still adventures, but they have added articles on the end to help give DMs more tools. They tend to be interesting reads too.

Yup its a great mag for a DM, I have been buying them monthly since they went too 3rd edition. I loved the Shackled City story and Age of the Worms is turning out pretty good.
The Vampires of Waterdeep they just did (3 part) is going too be jammed in the campaign I'm working on now.
Amazing magazine.

I rarely use the adventures or anything else from Dungeon. But, I have loads of pre-set stuff for what I want to, and then it's all there. I almost never get around to running things when they're new, so by the time I want to use some stuff, especially stuff that spans multiple issues, I already have all of them.

And, given the cost of a subscription over the cost of buying them one at a time, it's a great deal. Compare a year's subscription to the cost of a single hardback book. They're fairly similar.

I let my subscription lapse a few years ago because:
1. Issues arrived months after hitting the newstand
2. The Postal Carrier tended to mutilate the magazine, forcing it into my apartment mailbox

But I have continued to pick it up, first at my (F)LGS and then at my wholesaler. Great source of ideas. Even better when they put DDM stuff in it.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that and I applaud anyone who supports their FLGS. However, I support my FLGS with other purchases and still benefit from the discount that a subscription affords me. Best of both worlds.

BTW Kyle, do you frequent a store in Providence? Elsewhere? I'd like the address if you have it in case I'm ever up that way.

The one I frequent is in downtown Providence. It's called The Game Keeper. It's on the second floor of the arcade bldg. It's (Arcade) the oldest enclosed shopping center in the US. It ( The Game Keeper) was also HQ for MonkeyGod Ent., a small d20 co. that I did some playtesting for.

I hear that the new landlords are forcing out all the cool mom & pop shops to make office space. This will probably be around spring. I had another one close to me, North Providence, but they moved about 20 miles away.

Couldn't agree more. I started subscribing during the Shackled City adventure path, and the new format kicked in midway through. What a difference. I can't be without my monthly Dungeon these days. (Dragon, on the other hand, is more of a love/hate relationship).

I've been subscribing to Dungeon for years, and it really has improved markedly in the past 6 months or so.

On a side note, they even managed to get an adventure in the most recent issue where you can use your Sword Archons and Ghaele Eledrin miniatures.

I was quite pleased to see the AoW campaign using a lot of the new minis. They have done a GREAT job with the variety of encounters.

I got my first issue via subscription this month. Very cool!
