| I'm a huge sorcerer fan and as well as a big fan of all things dragon. Therefore, I've always really loved the idea of draconic feats.
However, I was recently reading my new copy of Lords of Madness and I was very surprised by the Aberrant feats. In many ways they are much stronger than Draconic feats (found in Complete Arcane and expanded upon in Races of the Dragon). Specifically they're more generally useful and scale better.
2 in particular bother me:
Draconic Skin gives a +1 Natural Armor. The Aberrant equivelant, Bestial Hide, gives a +1 Natural Armor for every 2 Aberrant feats you possess.
Draconic Flight gives you flight for the remainder of a round in which you cast a spell.Starspawn gives you wings so you can fly anytime you want plus you get an energy resistance and immunity to altitude problems.
Now don't get me wrong, there are plenty of great Draconic Feats (breath is just sick), resistance, legacy, toughness, even claw is cool. It just bothers me that some of them don't stack and are of low utility. Does anyone else feel that the Aberrant Feats are better than the Draconic Feats? Is there something I'm missing? | | Have: Cat; Want: Storm Giant Champion of Anything Dragonlance Before trading, please check the Disputed Trades Thread

| | Do the aberrant feats have pretty stiff requirements, such as having to have an aberration graft, subtype, etc.? Or other types of requirements that would affect either roleplaying or game mechanics that might differ from draconic feats? I don't have Lords of Madness yet. | | Champion of the Bone Naga (There's just so much roleplaying to be done with a large skeletal snake!) | |

| Sorcerers do not have a ton of spare feats usually, so I wouldn't normally worry about Bestial Hide. Draconic Skin seems a little weak to me. Dodge grants a situational AC bonus, but it is a better bonus type and it is an entry feat for a number of abilities (if you include non-core sources).
Starspawn looks overpowered though. Natural flight and elemental resistance are pretty good for a single feat unless it is a very low resistance.
I honestly I don't like the Draconic feats. They look neat until you remember that virtually all of the abilities can be duplicated by spells. Taking a item crafting feat and Master Artisan from the Player's Guide to Faerun seems more efficient to me. The problem is really that sorcerers (at least the ones I have seen played) almost never have feats to spare. The only ones I am tempted by are the breath weapon and the one that grants a bonus claw attack when you cast a spell. | | It's deja vu all over again.

| I'm at work right now so I can't post specifics on the Aberrant feat requirements. IIRC they aren't hard at all to attain, although they do turn you into somewhat of a freak (bulging eyes, tenticles, etc.). So they would have a role-playing effect. Because of this, I don't think they work for PCs, but they are great for BBEGs.
Starspawn is good, but it isn't that good. The rate of flight is limited to 1/2 your land move and it is for a limited duration. Still the flexibilty to fly at any time is nice PLUS you get cold resistance 5 and the altitude bonus (which are worth a feat on their own if you ask me).
One other key difference is that Draconic feats are sorcerer only feats whereas Aberrant feats are open to all classes. Draconic feats often draw from your spellcasting powers whereas Aberrant feats just function all the time.
One more aberrant feat that I think is too good gives you a swim speed and the ability to breath water. For just 1 feat with 2 general prereqs! | | Have: Cat; Want: Storm Giant Champion of Anything Dragonlance Before trading, please check the Disputed Trades Thread
