| I got an advance copy of Tome of Magic: Pactmagic, shadow, and truename magic. It was a gift from Ian Richards at Winter Fantasty. Winter Fantasy rocks by the way!
Anyways:
The book is nicely devided between all three optional magic systems. Each has its own mix of rules, feats, magic, monsters, and uses to fit it into your campaign. Normally I'm not a fan of optional rule books, but this one is exceptional. They tried to cover all the bases and in my opinion did a very good job of it. The art is amazing and the rules look interesting enough to take the jump of adding these types of magic to your game. Its worth the trouble.
Overall I would give it a 9 out of 10. It only loses out in that it doesn't have a nice intro adventure for each type or some other way to heavily tie the systems to your existing campaign. | | Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested! | Always a big fan of magic and psionics, now tome of magic in march and complete psionics in april. Woo Hoo!
Glad to hear they did a good job with the new optional systems, the sneak preview in dragon seemed interesting. Good to hear the whole book might be as good as the preview.

| | This book is high on my want list. I love new magic systems. The more varied ways of using magic, the happier I am. | | Champion of the Beholder and Beholderkin

| | Its good to read that they did a decent job of things. I envy you getting an early copy. My big hope is that we as DMs/players have an easier time of incorporating this material in to our games then say with the Incarnum book. I've got one game that I run that is heavy in the FR/Red Wizards camp so my mind has all sorts of possible uses with this book. Here's to it truely being that 9 out of 10! | | You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing? | |

Can't wait to see it Brad, thanks for the review so far.
What are your feelings about working some of these ideas (truename magic is the MOST interesting) into an Eberron campaign? | | POST DISCLAIMER: Above post may contain humor. | Details that I'd like to know:
Shadow magic, is there a new Pr-class for wizards/sorcerers/arcane users that casts shadow magic (that is also non-evil but not necessarily good either.) Or is it a base class?
Description of binder class and options to use other base classes with binder abilities.
True names: Any of the big name Fiends or Celestials named?

| didn't get home until late last night. But heres a bit more:
The book is split into 3 seperate sections, each color coded with a nice border so you can see the division looking at the side of the books pages. First is Pact Magic, then Shadow, then Truename. Each section has rules for the magic, prestige classes or base classes using it, optional feats for other classes to incorperate it, spells, items, monsters, and info about groups that fight for or against the specific magic. Each is sort of a mini DMG + PHB for each type.
Pact Magic is based on the concept that there are really weird monsters on other planes. You make a pact with them to gain power, sometimes at a great sacrafice to yourself. This allows you to channel their abilites, summon things and other magic effects. Notables included Karkus (from FR fame) and Kyriptis from the Tomb of horrors fame. Theres also a cool swarm critter listed (swarm of crows) and some weird tooth monster.
Shadow Magic seems to be similar to the shadow weave in FR. Didn't get far in this section beyond the art. Beautiful btw!
Truename Magic: Didn't get into this section at all yet. Will do so tonight.
