I was thinking about making a purple half-dragon based on the Purple dragon from the Dragon Compendium. However, it has three breath weapons. Is there an official rule somewhere on how to choose which one to give the half-dragon? Have any of you helpful types already done so? Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks

The monster manual always gives half dragons the elemental breath weapon if that helps.

Though you could always make up a new rules, thats always fun. Since half-dragons usually only get breath weapon 1/day a breath weapon like fear or weakness or whatever shouldn't be too unbalancing. I don't know though, the ability to send the minions of the Big Bad Evil guy running away in terror leaving him helpless even once a day is pretty powerful.

How do they do DC for half dragons? Is it 10 + 1/2 racial hit dice + con? So an average PC race character would have what? a DC 14-16? Thats not too bad. Elemental damage would probably give beeter bang for your buck, but the otehr would be more memoriable a character.

Yeah, I actually want to use it as an exotic npc...someone you can't tell if she's bad or good.

What sort of self-respecting chromatic dragon has THREE breath weapons? They should have stuck with the first-edition blinding, non-elemental energy lance.

Or go the route of the purple What's New Dragon and do something like the "Cone of Errata." [)]

OK. Here's what each dragon does:

Purple:
A purple dragon's breath weapon can take on three different forms. It can manifest as a cone of searing energy, a burst of blinding power, or a deadly blade of pure energy.

In its cone form, the purple dragon's breath weapon deals the listed damage as normal. Creatures must make Reflex saves for half damage.

In its burst form, the dragon's energy manifests as a blinding flash. All creatures within the ability's redius must make Fortitude saves or be permanently blinded.

Size/Burst Radius- Medium/30ft, Large/40ft, Huge/60ft, Gargantuan/80ft, Colossal/100ft

In the breath weapon's final form, the dragon forms a blade of energy that it uses to slash through its enemies. The dragon uses the blade as a weapon within its normal melee reach. It gains iterative attacks with this weapon as per its base attack bonus, but never more than four such attacks. The blade ignores all physical barriers, allowing the dragon tp make touch attacks to strike its foes. It deals half the damage listrd for the dragon's breath weapon. Because of the energy nature of the blade, the dragon does not add its Strentgh modifier to the damage. The dragon makes this attack in addition to its other physical attacks, although it cannot use a bite attack in the same round it attacks with its blade. The blade dissipates at the end of the dragon's action.
