From http://www.gamingreport.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Sections&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=197 (gotta love Google):

WT: If you had to pick a favorite of your new releases, which might it be? Any particular reason for the favoritism?

CP: I’m pretty excited about the Deck of Many Things, which should be out the week before Christmas. It takes a classic artifact and makes it real, with evocative art by Eliane Bettochi on tarot-sized cards. The reason I’m particularly keen on it is that I can imagine my 12-year old self thinking it was really cool. Generally, my tastes have changed a lot since I was 12, so I find it comforting that I still have a few things in common with my younger self.

Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

Yeah - but they show up in every campaign and I almost always pick a couple cards. Especially my chaotic PC's.

The one time I pulled from a deck, my PC's soul was imprisoned by Asmodeus.

Kind of reminds me of Harry Potters "Any Flavored Jellybeans". Except in D&D you tend to get the cyanide flavored one instead of ear wax.

didn't there use to be a cross reference that made your standard playing card deck into one of these for use in the game? Use this thing one time, got a good card the first time, got killed by orcus IIRC with the second card....

There still is. It's in the 3.5 DMG.

Never really thought it was worth money to get, basically, a Tarot deck...

I'm interested in one because it isn't a Tarot deck (i.e. the artwork/names are accurate and I don't have to break the deck up). I'm mostly interested in the quality of the artwork.

Nice to hear it'll be out before Christmas. Make a nice stocking-stuffer.

I've been in two campaigns where the item has popped up, one where it was represented by stones on the ground. I bever do it because my luck is horrible, but my friend always has gotten the same card. It's hilarious.

Aren't these decks basically campaign killers? I love the idea of the item, but I've never had the guts to drop it into my game. Seems like it would really mess with the flavor of the game.

Not really. It depends on when in the game it comes. In the games I've seen it in, by the time they appear PCs are usually 12-13th level so any gains are really not that big or unbalancing, and PCs usually get more screwed by it than not. I think the artifact is a real lesson in what greed an get you.

as a DM, i give the deck of many things as an option. the players may at any time request one card per session. and then the hilarity ensues. ha ha ha!

We have found the deck to be a fun way to add some complete randomness into our group (in the past).  Nothing's quite as fun as finding that Orcus is pissed at you (yeah, that one went well).

Just..one..more...card...

For any DM who is worried about teh deck being potentially game-killing I have a simple suggestion: cheat.

Take out any cards you feel are too good or too bad and replace them with duplicates of less potenitally unbalancing ones. Your players will never know the difference, it will be just as exciting and nerve-wracking for them, and they will forever have another yarn to add to their repertoire of stories.

That's not cheating, it's simply item creation

See, I took a look at the previews of Green Ronin's DoMT, and I just wasn't all that impressed with the artwork. I've been using the old DoMT cards from that old Dragon magazine (#148, August 1989) for years now without problems. I like the artwork just fine, and it doesn't include prominently displayed artist signatures. Besides, it was cheaper.

I just made my own using art from the WotC galleries.

Is there a full list somewhere I checked the DMG and it doesn't mention any of the things listed above...?
Or can the DM just add to the deck ?

You'll probably have luck on the web somewhere. I don't know a site offhand, but there have been alternate lists (expanded, more random) for wands of wonder so I assume in a similar place there would be what you are looking for.
