| I understand the frustrations of not getting value for your entry fees though. With Dreamblade for instance the majority of the repaints haven't come from Valor or Passion, the factions I play. Any booster that is opened to drafting is a 50/50 crap shoot there will be something I can even make use of. A certain amount of risk is involved.
With DDM hey lots of things our out of our control there. Sometimes the Epic Card isn't so good, sometimes the repaint sucks. Still I like to have them because I'm a bit of a completionist there. The last three prize boosters that were opened had a Wizard of Turmish, Van Richten, and Thrall of Blackrazor, I'm sure those players that pulled them (I was one of them) weren't 100% thrilled to get them.
The last 3 sets I've had completed to day or day after the release. Unless it's a select few minis I might want an extra of a booster draft doesn't do much for me, I end up giving my picks to other players. I suppose I could be frustrated in not comming away with anything for my entry fee except for the fact I had somewhere to go and play minis, hang out with some friends and be part of a community.
There's all kinds of ways to look at this issue. I'm sure a few people have different opinions on the matter. It's a subject that's come up before and always worth of discussion.

| My suggestion would be something like this:  Possible Prize Structure:  4 Players $20 entry - League Kit only , repaint and epic for each player and a bonus pick for the winner and 2nd place from the templates and modules. prize cost about $10 5 Players $25 entry - League Kit only , repaint and epic for each player and a bonus pick for the winner and 2nd place from the templates and modules. prize cost about $12 6 Players $30 entry - Booster and League Kit, booster for winner, repaint and epic for each other player and a bonus pick for 2nd place from the templates and modules. prize cost about $20 7 Players $35 entry - Booster and League Kit, booster for winner, repaint and epic for each other player and a bonus pick for 2nd place from the templates and modules. prize cost about $22 8 Players $40 entry - Booster and League Kit, booster for winner, repaint and epic for each other player and a bonus pick for 2nd place from the templates and modules. prize cost about $24 9 Players $45 entry - Booster and League Kit, booster for winner, repaint and epic for each other player and a bonus pick for 2nd place from the templates and modules. prize cost about $26 10 Players $50 entry - 2 boosters and League Kit, booster for winner, booster draft for 2nd - 9th place, repaint and epic for other player and a bonus pick for 3rd place from the templates and modules. prize cost about $38 11 Players $55 entry - 2 boosters and League Kit, booster for winner, booster draft for 2nd - 9th place, repaint and epic for other player and a bonus pick for 3rd place from the templates and modules. prize cost about $40 12 Players $60 entry - 2 boosters and League Kit, booster for winner, booster draft for 2nd - 9th place, repaint and epic for other player and a bonus pick for 3rd and 4th place from the templates and modules. prize cost about $42 13 Players $65 entry - 2 boosters and League Kit, booster for winner, booster draft for 2nd - 9th place, repaint and epic for other player and a bonus pick for 3rd and 4th place from the templates and modules. prize cost about $44 14 Players $70 entry - 3 boosters and League Kit, booster for winner, 2 booster draft for 2nd - 9th place, repaint and epic for everyone but 1st and a bonus pick for 3rd and 4th place from the templates and modules. prize cost about $56 This way the store is always making between $10 and $20 towards basement rent, and generating good will and sales hopefully pays the rest of the rent for the basement.
But if we start getting mostly bigger numbers then we will run out of repaints since the store can only get 4 kits a month (28 repaints) but there should be left overs from smaller tournaments | | Champion of Champions (for all races! even Gnomes ) Reference Thread Winnipeg Gryphon Cavalry Forums

| Back to the Sealed DDM issue I went back and looked at the last 6 sanctioned tournaments Game Knight ran that weren't release events. They played out with 7 in attendence, 4 in attendence, canceled, did not occur, 6 players, and 6 players.
Not exactly a stellar record there.

Oh we're on that like stink on a monkey. And as the master of scheduling I will I'll even run the event so Scott gets a chance to play in it. The only questions is should we do it Thursday night or Saturday afternoon?

| Aren't the choices Friday (6th), Saturday (7th), Sunday (8th)? It should be run whenever I'm in town. Which may be neither.
I'd probably say saturday is the better day for it though. Assuming we get more than our standard 6 people for sealed tournaments it would be sorta rushed to do it on a Thursday.

I was going to run a 500 point game there anyway. Hopefully everyone isn't at the lake.

| Wow.... it's back.
8 People out for the Star Wars release event, it's a very nice looking set. We were hoping for more but what are you going to do, it's somewhere to build from. An official Booourns goes to Nico who said he would be out but didn't come, his paladin better watch out on Wednesday.......
1st place went to Steve, 2nd to Andrew, 3rd to Scott, and 4th to Garret. Rounding things out were Joseph, Jay, Kyle, and Bram. Each of the finalists pulled a very rare in their prize boosters so that's none to shabby.
Only 3 people made it out to the DDM event. I would have played but I was too busy officiating the SWM.
League this Thursday, be there or be square.

| Yay!! 2nd Place for me!!!
Just want to say thanks again to Scott & Mike for putting on a great tournament (I would have said that even if I lost), and thanks to everyone else who was there. It's nice to see all of you enjoying Star Wars Minis. It's always been my favorite game - DDM is a very close second - and I'm hoping that some of you guys will come out next Saturday to play again. I know Garret probably wants to avenge Darth Vader's untimely demise at the hands of a lowly Ewok......(mwaah haah haah haah!)

| I'm putting together the July schedule now. Assuming we get one of the Night Below release events I think that will be all the sealed for July, the one I was going to put on the books for a Thursday night I think I'll bump back to August.
Any thoughts as to what Demos you'd like to run in July?

| Here's what I have so far for a revised July Game Knight schedule.
Wed 4th D&D RPG, AAM non-sanctioned.
Thur 5th 100 point DDM sanctioned (Scott)
Sat 7th 10 AM - 100 point SWM sanctioned (Scott), DBM Edge (MJ) 1 PM - Night Below Draft Release Event (MJ)
Wed 11th D&D RPG, AAM sanctioned (Scott)
Thur 12th 200 point DDM Sanctioned (Scott)
Sat 14th 10 AM - SWSSB 1 PM - 200 point DDM non-sanctioned
Wed 18th D&D RPG, AAM non-sanctioned
Thur 19th Epic DDM sanctioned (Scott)
Sat 21st 10 AM - 200 point SWM sanctioned (MJ), DBM Edge (Scott) 1 PM - 200 point DDM non-sanctioned (Andy's Kill or be Killed event)
Wed 25th D&D RPG, AAM non-sanctioned
Thur 26th DDM Ladder League
Sat 28th 10 AM - SWSSB 1 PM - 200 point DDM non-sanctioned (Tyler's Bar Fight)
A couple things may be subject to change. I think we're pretty likely to get one of the Night Below Release events but if we don't I'll run another sanctioned even in it's place. Scott is going to look into it on Monday.
I moved the regular sanctioned 200 point DDM tournament a week back so everyone could play with their brand new Night Below minis.
Let me know what you think.

| Actually, I won't be out for minis on Saturday the 21st - my friends are getting married that day, and it's out of town. I guess you guys could still play Kill or Be Killed that day, or move it to another.....doesn't matter to me either way....Summer is always kind of on and off for me anyway, depending on how much photography work I get.
I'm hoping I'll be able to hang around for the Dragon event this Saturday.....I'll definitely be there for Star Wars that day though.

| Re: Prizing
It seems nobody is happy unless they get a free booster. I wish they grew on trees too!
Seriously, I usually try to get 50% of the entry fees to help pay rent. The other 50% goes back to pay for prizes. Things to consider are this: Basement rent is paid separate from the main business, $265. That is $66.25 per week or $22 per day games are run. To generate $22 I need 9 people if the 50% rule of thumb is in place. Wednesday generates no revenue from AAM or D&D from entry fees, but does make a few dollars from drink sales. This puts the hope that Thursday/Saturday will break even up to trying to reach a $33 target. Heroclix only seems to generate $15 to 20 every second week. SWM is lucky if we get the required 4 people for either minis or starships. Retailer kits are $10 US, or about $11.80 CDN, plus freight and brokerage. I would safely put that at $13 or more each. The prize bin is full of stuff that some people just throw back or are not interested in. There is a monthly prize (the ticket draw) which was created to keep people happy when the stuff in the bin/retailer kits became boring and repetative. If I pay to keep the store open with an employee, 4 hours is $40. There is work involved in getting the sanctioning requests in, which takes time. It is also work to order the kits and time their arrival, enter the results and confirm those emails, and talk to WOTC when the upload process doesn't run smoothly, etc.
These are the things I have to take into consideration. The point about more traffic means more sales is a valid point. However many people buy their cases, and complete their sets with trades, and that is that. This isn't a complaint, just an observation. I know that without a place to play, case sales would also be down. So having the room also helps keep people interested in minis period. Besides, I like the game and I want to see other people play it too.
But I can't give away the farm. I've made concessions before, and will again. I think I need to sit down and write the prize schedule in stone at this point. I have 4 (sometimes more) retailer kits to work with each month. I usually try to save those for sanctioned games. With the non-sanctioned games we run 8 tournaments a month. So we will run out of kits if I use one for every game. And here we go again for people who come regularly getting the same Wizard of Turds card every week for a month. (For 2 months with Drizzt, and most people didn't even have the figure).
Sigh............
I'll see what I can come up with, again. If there are any suggestions for prizing other than boosters, entry fees, or retailer kits, please let me know. I've tried in the past to put things like dice, dice bags/boxes, card sleeves, various bags of figures, and other single uncommon figures in the prize bin. Now we have monthly draw tickets as well (I'll have to count them this month to see what those are costing). | | "GameKnight Games and Cool Stuff Winnipeg's source for RPGs and minis!" www.gameknight.ca

| Hey all,
Sorry to hear that there was no tournament last Saturday. Life ended up a bit busy for me (plus, the rain did not help set the mood), so I was not out.
Not sure what is going to happen this Saturday. I do not have a BIG dragon to bring, so I guess I have to figure out a warband to possibly try to kill one.
Cheers

| Or you could just play Star Wars Minis!
If anyone wants to get in on a tournament and doesn't have enough minis for a decent squad, just let me know in advance, and I'd be happy to bring down what I got and let you pick from mine. I'm sure that more than a few solid squads can be made from my 750+ Star Wars collection.
Fact of the matter is, I am happy to have a place to play these games, and although I may have moaned and groaned about prizes before myself, you won't find another store in Winnipeg that offers as much in the way of tournaments and prize support as Game Knight does.
oh....and as a side note, I haven't taken off my Star Wars shirt since Saturday.....

Hmmm....
Round 1 will have half the players play warbands, and half the players play dragons. Switcheroo for round 2. Odd numbers mean 3 people will be a group with 2 playing 500 point bands versus the third playing Big Red. Round 3 will have dragon killers (from rounds 1 and 2) play dragons one more time versus the people who failed to defeat one in rounds 1 and 2 (helping more people get more prizes).
Option #1: No entry fees. Each person to defeat a dragon will get 1 pick from the prize bin, and a blue raffle ticket (maximum 1 pick per person per day).
Option #2: $5 entry fees. 1 booster to be drafted as prizes (minimum 4 players, 8 or more I will add a second booster) Each person gets a blue raffle ticket, two if they win any games. Each win will be ranked by how many points of warband you have left (more points equals a bigger win), each loss will be ranked by how many hit points the dragon has left (less hp equals better rank). Only rounds 1 and 2 count for scoring. If you play again in round 3 you can opt to have it replace your round 1 or 2 score. But you must decide before you play, and accept your results. | | "GameKnight Games and Cool Stuff Winnipeg's source for RPGs and minis!" www.gameknight.ca

| I just spent the better part of my day organizing the shop's singles. I've changed prices on a lot of the single rares. 80% of those are now less expensive than they were.
I am also planing a June sale on single minis. Each week a different set will go on sale. The details are: June 1-2 Aberations and older 20% off June 4-9 DeathKnell 25% off June 11-16 AngelFire 30% off June 18-23 Underdark 25% off June 25-31 War Drums 20% off
Star Wars single rares are in the case and priced. Commons and Uncommons are being sorted. Cheers!
