Another good session tonight. Hopefully everyone had fun.

I'm going to reward everyone with a bonus 100 XP for roleplaying and what not. And I'm going to double that for everyone who posts a good paragraph here on what happened this week from the perspective of their character. The best entry gets to reroll their next critical miss.

We woke this morning after a night spent in a guano covered cave, the horses don’t seem to smell as bad after that.

There was a bit of indecision about whether to investigate this down shaft that the foolish dwarf dropped his spear into, but it was decided that we should press on to the enclave of Elven  knowledge so that we can learn more about our young charge.

Three long uneventful days of travel go by, that gnome is so annoying why must he talk so much, and why are there no wandering menaces for me to kill!!But, then we found a whole encampment of Hobgoblins and Bugbears what fun.

Though it would have been better to take them by surprise we were spotted an alarm was set off, we managed to kill over half of them before they ran away to join another larger group. We spent the night in their abandoned encampment and then pressed on, as we got closer to our goal it became obvious that they had gotten there first but Nymagus has found a back door so we traveled some more (oh what I wouldn’t give for a chance to kill some more bugbears) and now we have found a ruined tower and some stairs into the ground

Smack dab in the middle

05/24/2007 9:59 AM
After spending a relatively restful night in the cave, with no sign of that odd wolf, we broke camp and began moving out. There had been some discussion of exploring the cave with it's shaft and door, but the urgency of getting to the elven court seemed to be more important. After the gnome and dwarf making idiots of themselves again down there, I'm happy to be moving on...

After a few days of uneventful travel interspersed with some decent hunting in the woods for meals, we spotted a campfire a few hundred feet off the path. I scouted up with Lannister and his slave-goblin. We managed to see a few dozen hobgoblins and bugbears in what appeared to be a mercenary camp. Returning to our party, Blix informed us that they were indeed mercenaries, and vicious ones at that - though how a goblin defines vicious was yet to be determined. While the idea of circumventing them was tossed around, we decided to attempt an ambush. As luck (usually bad) would have it, we were spotted by a scout. Lannister took off after it trying to prevent it from delivering its message, but was too late. The little bugger through up a flare and alerted the whole camp. I'm not entirely sure what happened in there, but Vail and Lannister were running around together for a while. The rest of us moved up to attach since the element of surprise was lost. In the course of the battle, Vail returned to us without Lannister. My heart sank at the moment, but I fought on. Nymagus fell, but I stepped in to draw some attacks away from his defenseless body. When I had a chance, I poured a potion down his throat that revived him and then, glory be, Blix cast a cure spell on him as well! The little guy had been taking lessons from Gawain and was now a cleric of Lathander, likely the first goblin ever to be one. At any rate, the battle was long and hard and at the end we had slain roughly half the camp. Lannister returned to us, but the rest of the camp had fled into the woods to the north. Before exiting, they sounded an alarum horn that was answered by another further on.

We decided to rest up in this camp since they had abandoned their tents and supplies. Nymagus and I discussed the probability of the 20 or so survivors meeting up with the next group to form a super-group of 60 or more opponenets. We would not fare well against those numbers. We scanned the map long and hard and found something that we may have overlooked previously. There were three small marks on the map to the south, about two days travel. We had come somewhat by it without seeing anything. The marks looked similar to the way some cartographers indicate ruins. In the morning, we conferred with the others on the prospects of moving forward. Since elves are secretive by nature, it would stand to reason that an alternate route existed. It would likely be a hidden and dangerous route, but one that didn't involve 60 mercenaries standing in wait! For some strange reason, we were met with suspicion in voicing our discovery. Gawain must be fixated on the wolf I saw the other day, since my expression of being deep in thought instantly made him question whether the wolf had reappeared. Since the full moon is approaching again, I'm concerned about this fixation.

At any rate, we headed south. Two days of clear travels led us to a fallen tower. The tower was of obvious elven construction and had a concealed door in the now-cleared floor. The door appears to open into an underground path that will, hopefully, lead us to the court. While I'm sure there will be denizens below to contend with, hopefully their numbers will be easier to deal with. If our current pace holds, we should be in and out of the Court in just a few days. Hopefully we'll be able to start looking for Lannister's sword soon. I'm also looking forward to getting back to Shadowdale to see if I can invest in a better bow.

I'm going to retire for the night now. I'll write more in the morrow.

All hail the mighty Green Rhino!

In your closet

05/24/2007 2:52 PM
After sleeping all night in bad guano bigger than my head, we left that accursed cave. After a few days of boredom, We sighted a huge bonfire in the distance. Lannister, Casey, and our friendly neighborhood goblin, Blix, set off to scout it out. It seemed to be a large band of hobgoblins and bugbears equaling about two score combatants. To Lannister's despair, Blix knew more about the band than he did. Blix told us that the band was called the Rusty Sword gang and that they were known to be very vicious, hire themselves out as mercenaries, and use poison. We talk tactics for awhile, and decided to be sneaky, but alas, a goblin scout saw us and as it ran away Lannister and I shot at it but it managed to set off a flare. Already separated from the rest of the group when we chased the goblin scout, Lannister and I did what we do best, he ran away and I hid in the bushes. I was there for a few seconds after Lannister left and was about to go find someone, when a group of eight walked right by me. I waited until they were about eighty feet away from me, shot, and jumped in the bushes again. Looking out i saw they were focusing on Lannister who came out of no where. In a boldly heroic move I distracted two of them away from Lannister and RAN. They were about to catch up to me when I saw a large flash in the woodlands. The flash lit up everything and I saw my party in peril fighting another twelve hobgoblins and bugbears. Seeing Nymagus go down, so I ran up and saved his life by striking down his attacker in a mighty blow. Things went our way after that, with us killing all of our enemies and finding out Blix has taken to the path of a cleric of Lathander, following in the footsteps of Gawain. Casey scouted out the camp, upon returning he reported that the remainder of the band was packing up camp. By the time we got there the had left and we heard a horn in the distance, possibly meaning they had allies about half a day away. While Felix, Thagnor, and I were staging a battle of the bards (with me winning by a long shot), The others talked about what to do next. While all this was happening Lannister came back! He had a new, slightly decaying puppet friend. Apparently there is a back way into the elven court that the elves were not telling the rest of us. Going in the back way we found a tower with stairs going down. Going boldly down we traveled for three days.

Hello,

OK, time to address a few issues right off the top:

1)  Because of work I really cannot make it in to Gameknight much earlier than 5:30 on Wednesdays.  Sometimes a bit earlier and sometimes a bit later depending on traffic.  For the next little while I see that as being a bit later than 5:30 due to construction on all of the main southbound roads I can use to get to Gameknight.

2)  I don't mind the idea if Montana's food, but I have to admit that ribs are not my favourite.  I also do not like the idea of having to relocate for half of the game and them moving back again (plus, how will Lannister and Gawain spar if Scott has to mind the store?).

3)  Pizza for this week sounds good to me.

Cheers

Still a day or so to post your musings on the last session for the bonus XP.

We resume the action once again right where we left off last week, perhaps the perils of playing under a time constraint.

Will the brave adventures make it to the library they seek or will the forces of evil once again conspire to stop them?

Will Lannister get his sword back, the very sword who's absense seems to compond his ill fortune daily?

Will Gawain preside over his own nation of Lathander worshipping Goblins?

Will Thagnor blow his jug?

Will the terrible secret of Fleix Flounder be revealed?

Will they have Chicken for my pizza?

Tune in tomorrow to find out.

While Montanas is awesome and anyone who speaks out against ribs is risking having the escalator clause in their torchbearer's contract kick in........ I don't think as we are set up as a group currently it is in the cards.

For now we'll stick to pizza, burgers, and subs or another take-out option.

So, what does a sane cleric write about when travelling with insane (or slightly less than sane) colleagues?

Well ....

After a somewhat restless night sleeping in a cave filled with the smells of bats and guano (and bat guano even) the part yahd to come to a decision about our future course.  Would we explore the Drow tunnels we had discovered, or would we continue on our quest to the Elven Court and the knowledge (hopefully) contained in the library there.

After some short debate we continued on to the North-East to the Elven court.

Our travel was generally fairly relaxed and easy for just over two days.  On the third day, just as dusk was falling, we sighted the glow of a campfire in the distance.  Casey, Lannister and Blix went forwards to scout things out, and eventually returned to tell us that there was a camp of Bugbears and Hobgoblins around a great bonfire up ahead, roughly 200 feet or so off of the main trail we were following.  As we were still travelling with 22 horses, 2 mules and 2 donkeys, we knew that we could not sneak past the group of evil humanoids.  In addition, Blix told us that the Bugbears and Hobgoblins were from the Rusty Sword clan; know for being vicious and ruthless, and for hiring themselves out as mercenaries.  Another band of mercenaries in the space of less than a tenday.  A suspicious circumstance.

We were planning how to ambush the evil creatures when suddenly Veil and Lannister ran from the camp saying something about a scout.  Evidently we had been discovered, but as I was concentrating on strategy, and seeking Lathander's guidance, I had not noticed a thing.

Shortly afterwards as the remainder of our band prepared for a rushed assault against the enemy we saw and heard a small flare/explosion erupt in the tree tops near the enemy camp.  Surprise was well and truly gone.  I quickly cast Bull's Strength on myself and Bless on the party and we headed off to see if Veil and Lannister had been taken by the enemy, were lost and fighting, or something else.  We did not find Veil and Lannister, but we did run into a gang of Hobgoblins and Bugbears being led by a tough looking Hobgoblin dressed in Chainmail and wielding a very fine morningstar. Our ranks closed quickly and Cutter flew into a berserk rage to attempt to take down as many of the enemy as possible.  I called upon Lathander's support and summoned a spiritual weapon from the heavens to assail the enemy leader, but it was all for naught.  Lathander's holy weapon did not strike the foe once during the battle.  My own holy silver mace did much better, getting in a few nice hits on the enemy, but the battle hung on a knife's edge.  Cutter was badly wounded during the fight and Nymagus was knocked down by the enemy, bleeding from many wounds.  Thankfully, Casey was able to help stabilize our Elven wizard, and amazingly once the fighting had died down Blix also cast healing magic on the wounded elf.  At some point during the battle as well Veil had rejoined us, and he was also helping to protect Nymagus.  All in all, our little band fought well including Thangnor.  Torchey, Snoot and Blotto guarded the horses and pack animals just as well.

It seems that Blix has decided to follow in my footsteps and worship Lathander to such an extent that the deity has granted his favour upon him.  A glad day indeed it is when another soul is turned towards the dawn.

Not all shared in my optimism and happiness, however, as when we were envetually reunited with Lannister (who told a tale of running around the woods with many Hobgoblins and Bugbears chasing him) he claimed that our position had been discovered by a goblin scout with the same tribal markings as Blix.  Therefore, Blix was not to be trusted.  Alas, I must continue to minister to Lannister's untrusting soul.  He is correct that many goblins are evil and dangerous creatures, but Blix has had a change in attitude I sense.

Once we managed to regroup and heal up (and amazingly Felix forgot to mention to all of us that he had taken heavy damage during the battle as well) we continued our storming of the enemy camp to discover that in a period of roughly 10 minutes at most that the remaining enemy had fled.  The camp was large and could accommodate roughly forty troops.  As we had only faced about 20 humanoids in total, we seem to have gotten off lucky.  Of course, the horns that we had heard from the camp, and from the distance to the north during the battle signalled a rough future for us.

We slept the night in the enemy camp after fortifying it as best as possible, and also locating some treasure.  A large chest of silver and copper coins will help pay wages to our hirlings for the near term at least.  A journal found in the camp indicated that 7 mercenary bands had been sent against us by a drow priestess.  Having now faced two on the road that would seem to leave five more searching for us in the wilderness.  Perhaps it was only 4 more bands if the first group of drow we faced was also hunting us directly?

After a peaceful night we awoke and considered ou plans anew.  Both Casey and Nymagus were conversing in low tones, and Casey looked quite contemplative.  Very similar to when he saw that strange wold he had reported to us before.  I thought that something was up when he and Nymagus began speaking about a hidden way into the Elven court that they had not mentioned before.  I do not totally believe their reasoning behind the decision to head back south to a hidden entrance, but I trust their courage, honour, honesty and companionship enough to follow them to this hidden entrance for the time being.  I do not beleive they mean ill, but simply are not quite ready to trust the rest of us with all of their knowledge.  I can't say that I blame them.  After the antics of Veil, Lannister, Felix and Thagnor around the fire during the early evening, with singing, dancing, bad joke telling, multiple silent images and some poor attempts at compulsions spells and songs, I would have to agree that some of our fellowship might be less than all there.

Two further days travel to the south brought us to a ruined elven tower with a set of wooden trap doors into the earth covered in rubble.  We now stand at the gates into the earth, deciding our next course of action.

With the Light of the Dawn as my witness.

Gawain of Lathander

Shadowdale Campaign Chronicles Part III May 23/2007

First person narration by Lannister Lazenby

We wake up in this guano infested cave. I roll over onto something lumpy (more guano)? Nope, a potion. Sweeeet. Scrape off the guano, and it’s a potion Magic Fang. D’oh! Maybe it’ll come in handy if I contract lycanthropy.

We pull out one of our maps and make a note of this cave’s location, so we can comeback and check it out later. We pack up, head out, and travel for 1 day. A bonfire is spotted in the distance. Casey, Blix and I check it out. The little goblin is being uppity and uncooperative. We spot 20+ hobgoblins, 8+ bugbears and 4 large tents. Blix says they are the “Rusty Swords”, a group of fierce mercenaries. Whatever you say shorty. What’s that, a goblin spy! We chase him down. Can’t trust goblins, mom always used to say. I kill him with my crossbow, but the little bugger sets off a flare. He looks strangly familiar, like one of the goblins from Blix’s tribe. Now they know we’re all here! Veil and I hide. Where’s Blix? We see a hobgoblin scout come out and find the goblin corpse. He blows his horn. Curses! I try to get into position to sneak attack him. Damn, I miss. I run and hide. Oh, hey, a potion of hiding would help. Gulp!

A group of hobgoblins come marching by. I stay hidden and now don’t know where Veil has gotten to. I’ll follow these guys and pick them off slowly. SNAP. A dry twig?!?! Why do they always leave these things lying around in the forest? They hear me and I run and hide again. Run….run….run…hide…arrrgh I get shot! Run…run…run… hide, shoot-miss-aaargh! Run….hide….wait for it….shoot-miss-damn! They’re coming…hide…sneak attack. Woo-hoo double crits! Take that bugbear scum (as his corpse hits the forest floor). Hide again….shoot-miss…hide…sneak attack (almost killed him).

A new fight starts! Lose initiative-curses, and I fumble and lose my longsword (oh damn not again)…argh I’m hit…swing and miss…I’m hit again….swing and miss, out with my shortsword….fumble again (I hate this forest)…get hit again.....okay, at this point I take the hint. Those who fight and run away live to fight another day! Run…run…run…hide. Quaff healing potions, there, much better. Okay they’re gone, time to sneak back to camp. On the way, I stop and retrieve my sword, and hmmm, this bugbears head! I have an idea! I’ll put it on a spear and use it to trick the hobgoblins in the dark.

Back at camp, I tell the group how I distracted about a third of the enemies whilst they killed off the other two thirds. Sometimes my efforts just aren’t appreciated. And what’s up with Gawain? Hasn’t he ever seen a head on a stick before? Gee, the crusades are gonna come as a shock to him!

We find some chests with silver and copper, and a journal of this groups travels. It is trapped. SNAP, dang I hate it when…urp….that happens. I feel nauseous. I read the journal and it recounts how a drow woman named Ziranda is recruiting tribes in the area to hunt down the Shadowdale Light Fellowship. Dang it, that’s us. Maybe we ought to change our name at this point. Anyway, there is 8 groups, and we’ve possible dealt with 2 of them. Oh, and something about a goblin with a jeweled scimitar, who tried to sell it to this group, who is heading north?!?!? What the f***! I hate goblins. I’m going to get that guy and…oh, yeah, I’ll stay on topic. I keep working on my “bugbear puppet” even though the preist seems repulsed by the idea. Hey, it could be used to bluff them and save precious seconds in combat. Oh well, he just doesn’t get it. But he does dish out the good old healing. For that I am thankfull to have him around. Oh, and I mention to him about my suspicions about Blix and the group. He seems to think they’ve convertred to Lathander. (What? Are you freakin’ delusional? Who ever heard of Lathander worshiping goblins? Your church is going to love this one….)

We camp for the night and nothing eventful happens. Casey and Nymagus are wrapped up in conversation, but I can’t seem to get into position to eavesdrop on anything juicy. I bet they don’t believe Blix has come over to Lathander. The next day Gawain asks Blix about the goblin corpse I pointed out earlier. He says he doesn’t know anything (filthy liar). We debate going North (after the hobgoblins and my SCIMITAR) or northeast (elven library). A decision is made to head to the library. Sigh….my scimitar…. For the next two days travel is clear. We start seeing hobgoblin patrols with more frequency. We find a good camp. I seem to have lost my puppet, turns out Cutter ditched it. You know, what strikes fear into the hearts of our enemies? A head on a stick would do it.

Casey and Nymagus suggest another approach to the elven court. It seems they know something, and I sense they are holding something back! Casey seems to find this trail that leads to a tower. Another ruined elven tower. Don’t these elves look after their stuff? There is a set of doors and they lead down into a 30 foot radius round room.. I don’t know how this will get us to the elven court.

I have a bad feeling about this…..

Another session and the craziness continues. Oh sanity, wherefore art thou?

Since it's been working pretty well I'm going to offer another incentive for you to post your character's thoughts on the last session. Here's the way it's going to work this time, everyone is to post a good paragraph on the last session. If you all do so you each get 150XP. If someone fails to post though everyone loses 150XP.

It's all about the teamwork baby.

The Legend of Fiddlin' Dingle Oakenheart - Part 9 (Owwwww the Pain!)

No More Mister Nice Gnome, as the song went so did Dingle.

Tired of these constant bandit attacks young Dingle decided to do something about it. Despite his terrible personal pain the little gnome stood up and forced himself to walk it off, determined to get his stuff back not to mention his pride.

Tracking the Blood Harpies wasn't a difficult matter, it was clear they didn't consider Dingle a threat. An hour or so later as the terrible throbbing subsided the young fiddle player discovered the bandit's camp deep in the woods. Little more than a collection of simple tents Dingle watched the all female bandits for a time, studying their habits.

The Blood Harpies seemed to guard a particular tent with extra care. He figured that is where they were keeping his possessions. Forming a plan young Dingle decided to wait until the cover of darkness to sneak in and recover his things.

As evening fell the crude women dipped into their supply of fortified wine. With the bandits distracted Dingle knew this was his opportunity and under cover of darkness he slipped into their camp and made his way to the well guarded tent.....

Perhaps if you compose an epic jug ballad in their honor.

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

We spent the evening setting up a pen for our many horses.  Hopefully they will still be here when we come back from the Elven Court.

We traveled down the stairs into the darkness and found a large chamber with no doors.  After a thurough search, Nymagas said some of his magical mumbo jumbo and said he saw a sigil on the wall.  He then said something in ancient elvish that might have had to do with travel and asked us to walk into the wall.

Lanister, made a snarky comment about walking through the wall on the left and Nymagus said something else in ancient elvish that sounded similar to peril and walked through the door after saying he would be right back.

After he didn't return I followed him through the wall thinking he might be in trouble only to find he was in the middle of a large empty cavern.  Eventually the rest of the party came through the wall and we examined the room finding a tunnel leading down and another alcolve similar to the one we cam through to get here, but it had been damaged.

We traveled down the tunnel looking for a way out and found a symbol of Corelon on the floor that had been desecrated, there were also many elven skulls on the floor.  Even though Gawain said not to touch anything Nymagus disturbed the skulls and they all started flying around us and their eyes were glowing.  We destroyed them all before they could do any damage.  We then took a closer look at the disturbing visage on the only door out of the room.

We discovered that the doorway wanted a sacrifice to allow passage, and a few of us tried to give it blood by cutting our hands to get through it but to no avail.  Nymagus offered himself to the door by placing his hand in the mouth of the vissage and holding it there but it took a heavy toll on him, and he collapsed after the door was saited.

We moved into the next passage and were ambushed by some drow, I flew into a rage and did my best to kill as many as possible, it was a very tough battle and we were lucky that none of us fell, though a Felix was severly injured and I was near death.

After some ministrations from Gawain and Veil I was feeling much better and we discovered a hidden doorway which led to the weapons cache of an elven hero, where we found some magic Full Plate, and a set of magic Scimitars.

We argued alot about leaving the goblins or Blix to mind the animals. A pen was
was constructed while we bickered...eventually a lack of commitment or interest
just meant the horses were left in the pen. maybe they will be there when we
get back, I doubt it unless my Paladin's stead is among them! What say you Mike
Oh Mighty DM?

We descended a narrow/dark passage that torchy lit up! A silver a day indeed!
He must stink from all the bat feces he collected to keep his torch lit!!! We seached
the dead end room at the bottom. The wizard was able to decipher what I
assumed would be a safe magical route through a portal in the door but -
the rogue had to be a smart ass/or goad him into another route. Of course the
wizard is going to do something else when someone goads him. So we all entered
a dark, errie detect evil route. Luckily everyone made it though the portal but the
way back was destryed or defaced!

The Paladin has been going 1st and reported an evil cricle in the next room full of
dead skulls. The cleric and the Paladin had to turn them about 5 turns when they
came to live when the wizard kicked them. YOu know the wizard pretty much does
his own thing so guys stop telling him what to do!!! Anyhow the party swats at the
skulls and we get rid of them before they go boom in confined space and kill us.
Whose bright idea was it to come this fu@kin way!!!

down another passage we run into drow, a sh@t load of them. The Paladin takes
his multiple lumps and misses horribly but does start hitting at the end. Cutter has
moved past me and is also taking a heavy beating. The cleric sacrifices his attacks
to heal me Felix and then Cutter keeping us going a bit longer - he goes down
though for his efforts - I follow shortly too.

The rest of the party is moving up and taking range attacks on the Drows. I believe
cutter with some help from me nearly took down half the drows. The party took
the other half down. Way to go team Cutter!!! Whew!!!! After major healing the
party found some magical weapons!!!

Well Mike, does that qualify for a good paragraph for the incentive.
I had problems today posting there were errors on maxmini's.
I didn't to retype everything again but hey...shrug!!!

More importantly I am not responsible for losing the 150XP.
Unless me not wearing the orange thing effects everyone else!!!
