Thanks for the mention Aesoph. I go by Myth Master Jr on these boards.
Once again those dang orcs gave me fits. Their movement rates always confuse me and I end up making silly mistakes with my commander that allows him to get killed. Oh, well, a little more experience and I should be good to go. You guys haven't seen the last of me yet!!!![:D] | | Trade References||60 Trades Completed||Louisville Gaming Society||LGS Forums||Trade With Me Steven C Johnson, LGS Administrator All Gamers of Any Sort are Welcomed!

My wife Jules walked blocks to find another. She went up there and looked around and found that the only toilet paper was a pile in the corner that had been urinated on. | | Im out- find me on Hordelings if you want to chat.

| Ironballz and I ran into the worst bathroom in Illinois on our return trip from the Qual. It was covered in water. The sinks were filled with paper towels, the unirals filled with paper towels and the toilet clogged as well. I skidded as I left needing to find another bathroom to use.
The Tourny was really fun. I had a blast.

Ill be at Gencon no matter what offering moral support and such, and trying the last ditch qual there. I played my best, but I have a tendency for tough draws (Played the eventual 1st and 2nd place at Collinsville and two of the eventual top 4 here). But hey it makes my game better every time. | | Im out- find me on Hordelings if you want to chat.

| Yeah, I played (and lost) against the winner twice. He had harpies, I didn't have very good protection against it. I think I may have caught harpies now.
Until Angelfire, I'll be playing with harpies. Once AGF is released, well... we'll see if there's a LG cleric with a Remove Disease spell. | | Champion of the Minotaur Knight Herald of the Epic Snig

I got lucky against his harpies, minimal stuns from them. I just made a few major mistakes and never won an important init. | | Im out- find me on Hordelings if you want to chat.

| Yeah, this qualifier I have to say was a lot of fun. The people were all incredibly nice and a blast to play with. It's always a hoot meeting people you've chatted with in the forums, and putting a face to the names.
My original plan for warbands consisted of either trying a 4 ochre jelly insanity plan, or build something around my favorite piece in the game, the Lich. With the recent harpy buzz, I figured I'd toss a pair in instead of a 3rd hitter and see how it flew. I have to admit, I was rather suprised with the results, though I didn't encounter any of the matchups that I was dreading. I think I had 6 CE fights, and 1 CG.
I'm pretty awful with memory, and never remember to take much in terms of notes, so I can't do too much round by round commentary. I do know that I was sweating bullets till the very end in most of them though, bloody zombie white dragons seemed to have a lich-fetish and he must have been bitten well over 20 times over the course of the day. I've also discovered that the miserable beasts are impossible to command. I know it's a longshot, but still, 0 for 8 tries with a spirit next to the dragon for most of them is still a bit sad :-p
I wanted to give a shout out too Ironballz for having to put up with my annoying table banter and lichtastic comments for not one but two rounds of fierce play. Had me biting my nails in the finals as I realized I'd miscounted some range and had to have my lich go for his hold monster just 2 squares away from Mr ravager, and just a few steps from his champ. If he'd made his save there, I'm not sure what would have happened. I suspect we'd have a very re-dead lich. Both games were a lot of fun, as he is just one of those players that it's a pleasure to play against.
My semifinal opponent was the person I dread most to play in every tournament. Benimoto, one of the guys in our local group, and the person who more often than not pounds me. Every time I am paired with him at a tourney I get nervous, as I'm pretty sure he's the better player of the two of us. My saving grace this tourney however was the fact that he was fielding a band he wasn't familiar with. It was his first tourney piloting the now infamous Red Btings, and I suspect that saved me. Needless to say, the game was far too close for comfort.
As AesophDarkfable already discussed, I played him in round five. Probably one of the biggest nailbiters of the day for me, with my Lich just taking a mercilous pummeling. The lich was oddly on the ball for init that game like Aesoph said, which was a huge help as even with that statisitcal oddity the game was crazy close. I definately hope to have the chance to play him again sometime, as he's a great opponent.
The earlier rounds are a bit fuzzier in my mind. I played a dual white zombie dragon band, which did some very nice work on me with it's dual breath weapons. Think he killed 5 of my 6 orc warriors in the span of a round. Prior to that I played my only non CE band of the day, an inspired frenzy with a warchanter tossed in. The improved countersong had the harpies frustrated, but at the same time slowed the advance of the frenzies to keep them in the umbrella of protection. Heh, still, an interesting game of trying to time the harpies. My loss came at the hands of a very well piloted CE beatstick band, which dropped the Lich like a sack of badgers. I'd like to blame the dice, and I did roll some awful numbers, but the truth of the matter is I was simply outmaneuvered. Definately a learning experiece for Mr. Lich, axes....are bad.
All and all I know I had a blast, despite the absolutely creepy bathroom and the strange pair of subways within line of sight of each other no more than a couple hundred feet away. I mean, what was up with that?

| I was there in KY on Saturday, too. I took 11th place running a CE Quad, although I prefer to think that I tied for 5th place, since I had the same win/loss ratio ;) It was my first big tournament, and I'm pleased with how I played. Here's what I recall:
My first game was against someone running an amalgam of CE beatsticks, one harpy, orc druid, and two cursed spirits, I think. I caught some of his fodder and the druid in the red sam's breath weapon, so I had an early advantage. My big failure, though, was that I didn't base the druid when I had the chance, and my opponent was able to get off a key snake's swiftness. A couple of key bad rolls later, and I had lost my first match.
0-1
My second match was against a beholder, gauth, grim necro, dwarf skelly, minotaur skelly band. I won terrain initiative (which I actually won in every match I played!), and set up such that I could make it all the way to the extreme side of his territory with my entire band staying out of sight. Starting in the second round, I parked my band in a treasure room and began accruing tile points. My opponent didn't really understand how LOS worked, so he chose poor positioning for his beholder and gauth. Then, he started sending dwarf skeletons around my chamber, thinking he'd draw me out into LOS. Well, he drew out some orc warriors, but he was mistaken about LOS, which was obviously disappointing to him. The orc warriors weren't getting the job done, so I sent in the orc champ to clean up, given that I had nothing to worry about from the eyeballs. Next, he sent the minotaur skelly down, and I used the ogre ravager to take him out at a distance while still protected in the treasure chamber. Finally, all that was left was the beholder, gauth, and necro. I left a tile grabber in the treasure room and starting positioning for a final assault. Time ran out before the match reached its conclusion. All in all, the beholder and gauth didn't get to do anything but eliminate an orc warrior or two.
1-1
My third match was against a PDK, gold dragon, stonechild x3, man at arms band. My opponent sent the gold dragon into the thick of things, and I ganged up and killed it quickly. Then, I set up in waiting for the rest of his band. It shouldn't have been very close, but I made the mistake of staying clumped up, forgetting about the PDK's one spell. Well, he routed my untouched orc champ right off the board. I ended up winning by eight points.
2-1
My fourth match was against Benimoto. On the second turn, I nuked some of his fodder and his commander. That's when he taught me a thing or two about rushing when out of command. Also, Benimoto has one of the best poker faces I've ever seen. He was seeming all solemn and forlorn, while in fact he was plotting my ultimate destruction. I should have moved the fight to his side of the board and concentrated on getting rid of his champ and/or ravager. Instead, I stayed on my side of the board and ganged up on the dragon. The dragon breathed on me, and I couldn't hit for the life of me. Benimoto had also positioned his orc champ along the path that my eye of gruumsh and orc champion routed. Brilliant. I was definitely outplayed in this match, despite an early advantage, but I learned quite a few things.
2-2
My fifth match was against Keith, who was running a Quad with two champs. We met quickly at the center of the board. He took out much of my fodder with his red sam, while I went after his beaters with mine. That and some good rolls combined with his bad rolls to hand me the match quickly.
3-2
One major thing I learned is that I need to learn how to close. I had an advantage in both of the games I lost, and I let it slip away. Also, I learned that I can't run or turtle. I can't resist the urge to keep fighting and finish the match. So, I need to learn how to take time, reposition, and launch another wave of attacks. It's not the same as running out the clock if I'm trying to get into a good position for a final assault.
Anyhoo, I had a blast, and I agree wholeheartedly about the nasty bathroom at the Fun Asylum. Other than that, it was a great place to play, though.
