| Hello,
The Winnipeg Pre-release ran between 11:00 and 18:00 CDT today. A total of 16 skirmishers showed up, which is not an all time hight for Winnipeg, but respectable.
The top two finishers were:
1) Richard II 2) Isondaho
I went 1-3 for the tournament. In all three of my losses my squishy commander was eliminated and/or my Barbed Devil was routed off the board.
Overall, a great afternoon of fun. Angelfire looks to be a great set that will change skirmishing tactics quite a bit.
Cheers [:)] | | Successful Trades: 77 * Pending Trades: 0 * Bad Trades: KONG (B.W.) Trade History * Trading Thread * Sales Thread * Winnipeg Meetingplace

| Alright, so I just got finished playing in the prerelease tournament at Gameknight Games and Cool Stuff in Winnipeg, MB, Canada, and I must say I had a ton of fun. I¡¦m going to get the acknowledgements and such taken care of first.
First, thanks and congrats to Mark and Scott for a very well run tournament. We played 4 round of swiss and then the top 4, and it only took us about 7 hours, and that includes a break for lunch.
Second, thanks to everyone that came out, it was a lot of fun again. I hope some of those people that were there today begin to show up for the weekly tournaments so that we can get our weekly turnout back up to the 8 or 10 that it used to be.
So, on to the meat of the matter eh.
After cracking open my two boosters (anyone find these things harder to open then the DK ones?), I was both pleased and somewhat disappointed. I did find a Cleric of Dol Arrah (great), but I also got the Thri-Kreen Barbarian. Incited is bad, but that disruptive sucks too. My question is if the disruptive creature routs off the board or dies without making an attack, does the player still not get to add their commander rating, or once the creature is gone the disruptive part is gone? And does it apply to terrain init? I assumed it did apply to terrain init, but with the cleric of dol arrah around, I wasn¡¦t going to use anything disruptive, since the general plan was to dominate init and not fail too many morale saves.
Anyway, the list of what went into the band:
Cleric of Dol Arrah 45 Barbed Devil 89 Chraal 35 Dwarf Mercenary 9 Wild Elf Barbarian 6 Kobold Soldier 6 Skeletal Archer 5 Skeletal Archer 5 200
I also pulled:
Thri-Kreen Barbarian Bugbear Champion of Erythnul Wrackspawn Large Air Elemental Hobgoblin Impaler Talenta Halfling Dwarf Raider Elf Swashbuckler The barbed devil was my beef, and the chraal is just efficient. With the Cleric of Dol Arrah I had no real need for a 2nd commander imo, so the BCoE didn¡¦t make the cut. It left me 31 points, and I contemplated the LAE, but a) he looks silly, and b) it¡¦d leave me low on activations. So I filled in the final points with what I considered efficient fodder.
For tiles I went with rubble assembly, torture, treasure room, and spike stone cave. I wanted to block LoS in case of archmages and other nasties (Ghaele) and I liked the potential to win init and box in the large non flying creatures with the torture chamber and spike stone cave. However, if I had to do it over again, I¡¦d definitely have taken something with a magic circle since neither of my beaters did magic damage and there was just loads of DR all over the place. But live and learn.
Round One vs Mark (I think)
Mark¡¦s warband consisted of:
Hezrou Divine Champion of Corellon Weretiger Hobgoblin Impaler Caravan Guard
I won terrain init, and immediately set up to block his terrain and hinder his large creatures with the spike stones and torture chamber. It kept him from getting tile points the first round, and I don¡¦t think he got any the entire game really.
We met in a corridor with his hezrou and were tiger engaging my chraal and barbed devil while the DCoC magic weaponed a couple things. I managed to get rid of the weretiger pretty fast as well as the hobgoblin and caravan guard with a breathweapon and some attacks. After that it pretty much just turned into a slugfest, with the Cleric of Dol Arrah showing his worth by dropping 30 point heals onto my wounded guys. I eventually managed to wear down the hezrou and dismissed it I think. Either that or he made the save and I just had to pummel him down, I forget exactly. The DCoC went down as well, but I managed to survive thanks to the heals. My fodder accomplished little although I believe a skeletal archer scored a crit for 10 on the hezrou and the wild elf barbarian managed a crit on the DCoC for 20 which helped. And I managed to make morale with both the barbed devil and chraal. Commander 7 was paying off already.
1-0
Round two against Chris B.
Chris had the dreaded archmage. Archmages are bad news. The phoelarch with my fire fearing chraal wasn¡¦t a good thing to see either. Fortunately he only had three activations (longstrider ranger commander 0). He was nice enough to defeat the Ghaele Eladrin in the first round, so as long as I kept winning I would be able to avoid the Ghaele until the playoffs if he made it.
I won terrain init, and managed to get myself 1st turn tile points, and if he wanted 1st turn points he¡¦d have to use the longstrider ranger and run him way outta the way.
I was kinda fortunate here, since Chris played the archmage awfully aggressively. He ran up the archmage and phoelarch to try and unload the mordy¡¦s swords (which woulda been really bad), but I won init round two and smacked the archmage for 15 with the barbed devil and then used the chraal¡¦s breathweapon to hit the phoelarch for 40 and the archmage for 10. He retaliated by trying to cast mordy¡¦s sword on my barbed devil but failed both SR rolls and I breathed a sigh of relief. His phoelarch smacked my chraal for 20. His Longstrider ranger smacked my Wild Elf barbarian for 10, but thanks to his boldness, he stayed around.
Round 3 I won init (again) and sent my barbed devil after the archmage, but I missed due to conceal. ƒ¼ I then killed the phoelarch with the chraal, but failed my save and took 70 damage thanks to his explosion, losing my chraal too. ƒ¼ He managed to get a mordy¡¦s sword on the barbed devil. His longstrider killed my wild elf and then went to threaten my fodder and grab tile points at the same time. I did a bit of damage to the longstrider, but not enough to force morale.
Round 4 I charged the archmage after winning init, and rolled a crit, but missed the conceal check. ƒ¼ I did manage to rout his longstrider though. He took the aoo from the barbed devil and DD away, and now I had to chase him down. Aargh. Fortunately I was able to use the heal spells of my Cleric along with a large edge in init and activations to chase him down and finish him off with the barbed devil.
2-0
Round Three vs Norm (Isondaho)
I’m feeling pretty good at this point. Beat the archmage and won’t have to face the Ghaele for awhile. So of course I get to face the steel predator. Yikes that thing is scary. Pounce followed by a swift cone for 40 is just wrong. Fortunately norm didn’t do that to me. Norm’s band:
Steel Predator 94 Caravan Guard 5 Dwarf Wizard 21 Bugbear Champion of Erythnul 34 Dwarf Mercenary 9 Justice Archon 32 Skeletal Archer 5
A nice warband imo. I think I won terrain init, but after I placed my torture chamber, he blocked the optimal spike stone placement with his hall of heroes (I so should’ve used this tile for my warband), and made it so that the would get to the circles before me. The good news was that I would get tile points and he wouldn’t.
We moved out and I sent ye olde elf barbarian to grab tile points. He moved his steel predator into charge range, and I moved up my barbed devil and chraal up. I believe his skeletal archer killed one of mine, but it wasn’t a huge deal.
Round 2 I believe he could’ve done the pounce/swift sonic cone, and that would’ve hurt a lot but he chose to just pounce me. The Sonic cone came next round. He roughed up my chraal pretty badly (25 damage). I took the aoo to move the chraal around and get an attack off, and then brought in the CoDA to heal him for 30. This fortunately also put my cleric in a position to be useful, but behind a wall from his steel predator so I wouldn’t get caught in the cone. My barbed devil hit with frightful impale but he made the save. We then traded some minor attacks, but nothing major.
Round 3 I managed to breathweapon his commander who failed its save, and morale save, and rally attempt, so he was now commanderless. Nice. We slugged it out for a few round and unfortunately his steel predator made its ooc morale save at half hp. But I had one more trick up my sleeve. Half HP for the predator is 50, so I unleashed my Dismissal spell and he failed the save. Pfew. I then mopped up his band and won with tile points iirc.
Round 4 vs Daniel
Anyway, 3-0 and going to the Top 4, so this game didn’t mean a whole lot. I hadn’t seen this guy at any previous tournaments, but he was a solid player. His warband was:
Cleric of Dol Arrah 45 Large Copper Dragon 65 Dwarf Raider 21 Wand Expert 33 Chraal 35
I lost terrain init this game, and I don’t really recall what happened. I do remember there was a big open spot in just on my side of the center line, and this is where most of the fighting took place.
Looking at the cards, I realized the Barbed Devil would make a super wand expert shield (immune fire and resist 10 acid), so I wasn’t too worried. It turned out I underestimated him. With the open area he was able to run around and target things other then the devil. I shoulda tried to get more narrow corridors like in my other games. Oh well.
So, we advanced into this middle area. He managed to hit my kobold and chraal with the dragon’s bw, chraal made its save, kobold didn’t and died. I then went after the dragon with the chraal while I sent the barbed devil to thwack his cleric of dol arrah, iirc. I managed to get him to fail morale (bad) and he ran off, but rallied and healed himself. The Wand Expert also failed morale, but rallied and got healed too. His chraal hung out on my torture chamber killing things I sent there to grab tile points. But it gave me the time I needed to kill him copper dragon. But things started to go down hill. He managed to get around my barbed devil and started blasting away at the my chraal. He also managed to get to my Cleric and eventually kill both. I forgot about the chraal’s death throes, I think it coulda helped me. Anyway, it came down to my barbed devil and his cleric of dol arrah and chraal. When time was called (my only game to go to time) we both had 50 assault points, and I won by like 9 points. Well, 8 I guess since his band is only 199. He had 80 left, so I had 169, and I had 89 left so he had 161. Since he was grabbing tile points at the end, one more round and I’d have lost.
4-0
Round 5 vs Virgil
Virgil’s another guy I hadn’t played against before. We’re not at crunch time. To me there isn’t that big a difference between 4 boosters and 6 (although 6’d be nice) but there is a difference between 1 and 4, so I really want to win this game and guarantee myself 4 boosters.
Virgil’s band consisted of:
Sword Archon Werebear Wand Expert Ghostly Consort WTF
So, objective 1: Don’t get hit by the discorporating dive, and don’t waste too much time flailing away at the incorporeal consort.
I won terrain init, and dropped my treasure room just across the centre line so I could grab tile points and block that nasty wand expert. An added benefit was denying him tile points. I also placed my treasure room in his backfield so that anything that was routing would very likely not have LoS to the sword archon and not get to rally.
We both advanced, with me sending the wild elf barbarian to grab tile points and sending my beef ahead. I wanted to milk my activations as much as possible so that he wouldn’t be able to move the sword archon after I’d moved something important and get a charge off if he won init next round.
Round 2, his wand expert hit my wild elf barbarian for 10 acid, but thanks to his boldness he didn’t rout. I retaliated by smacking his WTF for 10 with the barbarian. I went to work on the werebear leading the way, but it made it’s paralysis save (the thing’s apparently humanoid and can be targeted by hold person). I smacked it with the chraal, but that dr got in the way. I was only doing 10 damage. He’d mwed his werebear with the wand expert and swung back, doing some damage. He used the ghostly consort (cool looking mini btw) to try and get me to hit myself, but I kept making saves.
Round 3 I routed the WTF and the werebear, although the bear was able to rally. Here I made a mistake, moving the cleric before he’d moved his sword archon and he then flew the sword archon over my guys to base the cleric. I thought the archon had two attacks and thought I was kinda doomed if I lost init, which I did. But fortunately he just smacked me for 30 and I made morale. Then I healed myself for 30. [:)] My wild elf charged his rallied werebear iirc and hit, while the kobold missed. Hmm. That’s not right. It’s close, but I’m missing something. No biggie really. Oh, I know. I charged his wand expert with the barbarian and kobold, both hit, causing him to rout. Then his werebear rushed my barbarian and squashed him.
I started to chip away at the sword archon’s hp as he hit my cleric and my cleric healed himself and made possession saves. Eventually my cleric died, but not before I’d gotten the sword archon to only 10 hp left. I then killed the sword archon with the devil, and his werebear with my chraal. I had enough tile points to cover the ghostly consort and got the victory.
5-0
Round 6 vs Norm again
Woot. Here it was for all the marbles. I was pretty content now. 4 boosters would be cool, 6’d be better. No pressure. For those of you with short memories, norm’s band consisted of:
Steel Predator Caravan Guard Dwarf Wizard Bugbear Champion of Erythnul Dwarf Mercenary Justice Archon Skeletal Archer
This was an uber quick game really. I totally botched my treasure room placement, but it didn’t matter (I put the entrances facing him, lol).
Anyway, we both advanced, and one round two, he double moved the steel predator to base my cleric, but decided not to blast the cone (I think it would’ve only hit the cleric). I took the aoo and moved away and healed myself back to full. Then I hit him with frightful impale (he failed morale) and on round 3 he failed his rally check and routed off the board. That was pretty much it since I hadn’t taken any damage. I cleaned up his warband, losing my dwarf merc to his when it rolled a crit, and my wild elf barbarian to his justice archon.
For my six boosters I ended up with:
Red Slaad (neato, not pulled in the prerelease itself iirc) Celestial Pegasus (definitely not pulled) Orog Warlord Sword Archon Phoelarch Efreeti
Very nice pulls imo. I also got a troll and a couple of weretigers. Hehe.
Not sure totally what norm got, but I remember an orc wolf shaman (I think, although he may’ve had that in the prerelease itself) and he did get the Large Copper Dragon and a couple of Chraals which is cool.
All in all, a great time, thanks again to Mark and Scott and everyone who showed up to game. It was fun, and I hope to see some of you had the weekly tournaments.

| Hello,
Just thought that I would add in my thanks to the organizers, Scott & Mark.
If anyone is interested, I pulled:
Booster 1:
Djinni Large Air Elemental Bugbear Champion of Erythnul Elf Swashbuckler Hobgoblin Impaler Skeletal Archer Caravan Guard Direguard
Booster 2:
Barbed Devil Blackscale Lizardfolk Spiker Champion Imp Ophidian Dwarf Mercenary Kobold Soldier Dwarf Raider
I selected the following as my competitive band:
Bugbear Champion of Erythnul Elf Swashbuckler Caravan Guard Barbed Devil Blackscale Lizardfolk Spiker Champion
Not the greatest (as my results showed), but I only had the one commander, and the Djinni needs support pieces in my opinion to be viable.
Cheers [:)] | | Successful Trades: 77 * Pending Trades: 0 * Bad Trades: KONG (B.W.) Trade History * Trading Thread * Sales Thread * Winnipeg Meetingplace

| | You know, I just realized my chraal should've been eliminated against Virgil when he killed my cleric. I think I still woulda won since I had a near full hp barbed devil and only needed one thwack on his werebear, but still. | |
