| I fronted all the money for the trophy minis, repainting, engraved bases, store trophy, etc. I really think the cut to the top 4 and the prepainted trophies made the California DDM Open into a premier tournament. (Having 5 of the top 8 from the Gencon Indy Championship did not hurt either.)
If anyone is interested in details about how the tournament was organized, the cost structure, or other ideas to do something similar in their area, feel free to contact me as I am eager to help out. with DDM in the title, so my email filter does not eat it. | | Member of the Low Post Count but High Post Content Society

| I've already set the wheels in motion to get trophies for next time...
A most excellent suggestion!
Ack: I hope you come (and bring a larger contingent with you!) to the next open!

I'm sure Rune would be honored to paint up some trophies... I mentioned this to him last night as we were getting ready for bed and he said it sounded cool. Right now he is working on a rather large diarama for a Christmas present (which is almost done and will be on his webpage soon) but he will have plenty of time the beginning of the year to paint.
So how long do the tournaments last? We are thinking of trying to make the next one. | | "Today is gone. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one. Every day, from here to there, funny things are everywhere." Dr. Seuss

Mrs. Rune,
You can count on the tournaments running 5 or 6 rounds in every case. Due to the natural slack time in between rounds, that leads to about 6 or 7 hours run time. TJs ran this past Open very tightly: our five round tournament ended in 6 hours - even including prize distribution! The tourneys will start at 10am, so you can usually figure on being done by 5pm - 6pm at the outside.
Watch this Tournaments forum for an announcement of the next Open; I hope to post it today.

| Another question for the Participants:
How many rounds did your matches go? Did you find yourself with at least 1 more round than you would have in the past?
How many were clearly decided on time, vs conclusive victory?

I'm with you guys on this - I think custom repaints are an excellent prize. Honestly, they don't even need the little wooden bases or anything, though those are amazingly cool. Four uncommons, painted slightly differently, is still a great, one-of-a-kind prize for your competitors. | | -DaemonKain Proud Mascot of Team Amish

| | I am currently trying to set up a large tournament like this in my home state (Utah) and I would like to know how you went about putting yours together. I'm trying to get advice from those who have already done this so that we can have a well run event with great turnout. If any of you who were involved in the organization of this tourney could e-mail me with info that would be great. Thanks. | | | |

I spoke with Tom at the Underdark Prerelease about the method behind his prize distribution madness, and I like the way that he thinks!
As a casual player, the likelihood of me finishing in the top 4 is verrrrrrry slim at best, (Understatement of the Year award candidate), especially given the incredibly skilled and competitive players that show up at TJs. Spreading out prize distribution does indeed give me a bit more incentive to show up. If I really hustle and if luck is on my side, I might place well enough to land in the middle/upper middle of the pack and walk away with a free booster. Given that I show up at prereleases to feed my plastic crack addiction a week sooner, and that my miniatures budget seems to be shrinking, even though it's not a sure thing that I'd place well enough to receive one of the more widely distributed prizes by any stretch, it's still within the realm of possibility. To me, that's just gravy on top of everything else.
That being said, the cupcake that I received for winning the last place showdown at the Underdark Prerelease was delicious. :) | | Cassael's Lament - An Eberron Story Vindicated Champion of Quori Champion of the Bone Knight

I will make every effort attend the next open. Hell, I think TJs and Dragon's Lair are trying to make this a regular event and I will probably offer my help getting it setup.
And Ive already started talking with Lynch about catching a local tourney at their FLGS.. what about yours? I can make the quick drive up to NH.. Ive got relatives in Portsmouth that I should visit more frequently anyway..... bop me over the head when the next one is being planned and I will see what i can do.

| I think we have a date - there are just a couple of more things to check. I hope to post the new date tomorrow. This time, you will have more like 7 or so weeks notice, rather than the 3 or 4 you had last time.
With the greater notice and more time for me to personally contact (bug) everyone I can think of, I hope we can at least double the number of New Englanders who show from last times 13. Of course, I would love for our Canadian friends to keep coming, but I realize we can't always count on that due to distance. Us more local types don't have that excuse.

| I'm another vote for the spreading out of the booster prizes and unique repaints for the real winners. My contingency are all novice competitors and we strive for the excitement of reaching prizes. If it becomes impossible, we probably won't come (even if we could fit it into the schedule ;). I played my last match of the pre-release for prizes (and did stupid things and lost), and it was the highlight of the day. I would have been more disappointed to be "out of the running" in a round or three than I was screwing up the nice chance I had.

| Here are some pictures I took at the NE Open. The comments are in French but I'll try to post an English version soon. http://www.blackguard.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4520
Also, we are starting the hole repaint thing for tournament prizes. For example, the North Bank League will attribute this repaint of Kord. http://www.blackguard.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4540 | | "And now, may I make a right choice, and change the evil fate of this unhappy day!" | Thanks for the pictures and report, Paido. I knew that my Grad School French would come in handy someday. You got one thing wrong though: your "malchance" with your inital Dueragr attacks struck me as rather "heureusement" [:)]. But seriously, you had a strong edge until that run of luck evened things out for me.
The trophy looks cool! We'll see if we can have one for our next Open.
Thanks,

| I would suggest some flexibility in the trophies and by that I mean not preselecting which one goes for first place. Give the winner first choice, and the appropiate base with the inscription.
Is your plan to try and have these fests every few months?

| The plan is to have these Opens approximately every two months, spaced such that they do not overlap WotC events. That way, between Opens, and prereleases and Qualifiers, the DDM players of New England should have an excuse to gather about every month.
TJs buys a whole lot of pizza and sells two good size slices for $3. We ate while we played.
Good point about letting the winner pick among any trophies.

| Congrats on the win, Pat. Great report.
I've been playing around with a similar build (with a horribly misguided Choker variation) and have had the same problem with the HH's damage output. It's gotten so bad that one friend locally compared the HH to the ZWD and just ignores it altogether when playing against it. I've gotten burned at least once by monks taking the HHs AOOs to get to squishier targets.
Sorry that I wasn't able to make it down, but we're still getting settled after 3 months of couch-surfing. Things should be much less crazy for the next open though. I have a work thing on a Wednesday in Boston in early January and hope to finally make it to Battlegrounds as well.

| Thanks for the detailed report Pat. It was a pleasure to read.
I too would personally value a special trophy more then large amounts of booster packs. This really seems to be a great solution to the problem of distributing prizes. | | Email | Ebay Feedback Page | Maxminis Referance Thread | Have/Want List
