I am happy to report that the first ever tournament hosted by my FLGS was a huge success. Thankyou everyone for coming out. Just a year ago I had no stores within a one hour drive of my home that hosted DDM. I was driving out to NJ to play which was 2 hours. So finally I took the initiative on my own to organize something at the only shop in my area. I called in December, got the OK, and invited everyone I knew in the area. We got 11 people to come out and two more of my friends who would have played were unable to make it so we could have gotten 13. I was thrilled. I was just hoping we could get about 6 to make it worthwhile but we got 11.

The secret I think was that I convinced the store owner to have it a free event. He purchased two retailer kits and I purchased two boosters from him for prizes. We gave out the prizes to everyone who played. I took the advice of the others on here and opened both prize boosters and had everyone take turns picking a mini. First place chose first, then second place, etc down to last. Then we went in reverse order back to the top. We played four rounds. I think everyone had a great time and everyone I spoke with said they would return.

The winner of the tournament was Chad Ackerman with the following warband:

Yuan-ti Abomination
Eye of Gruumsh
Orc Champion
Grimlock Barbarian x2
Lolth's Sting x3

If you notice this adds up to 208 points. But everyone failed to notice that fact. I didn't realize it until the next morning. Oops my only mistake as the organizer. I should have checked all the bands. I know Chad didn't do that intentionally so it doesn't really matter. Chad is a good player anyway.

I finished in second place with an IM/FB variant that I have been using. (The actual build is a secret). My only loss was to this other Chad when he scored a critical hit on my FB with his Eye of G to finish her off, which was followed by a failed sleep save on my other FB so when she died I got no death strike. Despite those unfortunate results for me the match was still close. Hats off to Chad for winning.

Third place went to Bill Swope (Swoper) with this band:

Aspect of Kord
Couatl
CoDA
Justice Archon
Barbarian Mercenary
HDW
MAA

Bill's only loss was to Chad Ackerman.

I'll see if I can get a report from Bill about his finals matchup with Chad for the first place title. They were both undefeated going into the match.

I'll give a brief report of my own matches later.

I live in Sellersville which sits about one hour North of Philadelphia and a half hour south of Allentown. Where are you from?

Just an FYI on sleeping Berserkers. As soon as you take any damage from any source, they wake up, even from burnout. So if they activate while asleep, burnout wakes them up and they can take their turn as normal still or get off a death strike if burnout kills them.

Of course the one way that would stop you is if the Lolth's Sting was the one that dropped you to 0 and then you failed your sleep save. So if that's what happened, then NEVERMIND.

Its funny you mentioned that because I was aware of that before but forgot about it during the match. However, in this instance it didn't matter because the Lolth's sting activated and put the FB to sleep. Then the Orc Champion activated and finished off the FB before she could wakeup. But had I remembered that the FB could wake herself I wouldn't have played the FB so timidly against them. The Hellspike map is what really hurt my band. It neutered my archers and severely limited the effectiveness of the GMA. The victory areas were too far for the wolves to reach on turn one so I never got the VP edge I usually get with my band. All of these factors contributed to my loss yet I almost won anyway. Had the first FB not gone down to that critical she would have lived to put a full attack in on his orc champion before it activated so I would have killed the champ and never lost the other FB. Oh well, at least a guy named Chad won and I did learn some things about how to play my band.
