I was playing on the teleport temple mat. As always, the tournment was well run, and I had a lot of fun.

Here's my micro report: The night before I was still trying to decide on a band, and was searching for some non-obvious secret tech. I noticed the ghast. While the difficult 5, the wardrums rules might his speed would be unaffected, and I didn't need him under command because he's fearless. Unlimited paralysis attacks and stench sounded pretty great. Of course he had only 30 hitpoints, but I feel any time my opponents spends killing my ghast is time the rest of my band is beating his. Of course, I was doomed if I faced quad horrors, but I was pretty sure that passe. Would the ghast work out though?

Well the answer was not really. He wasn't awful but didn't really pull his worth. I only got about 2-3 attacks with him a game, and he has to hit, and they have to fail their save (unfortunately wardrummer doesn't provide -4 to all saves). I only got one paralysis off the whole tournament (though I only had 4 games), and that was on a green dragon (the rest of the band was duergar champs, so no luck for me there). Though he could have won me my first game, when a HGB (within melee reach of my ravager) made his save. Oh, if only he had failed. 120 damage would have been so nice. Oh well.

its a typo that has caused this. No big deal obiviously.

Now lets talk about this "mistake". Did he make a mistake or did you make a masterful move? I dont see them being the same thing always. sometimes its just a mistake (when I gave pat an open channel to get his HGB to my Cleric - it was a mistake, but one Im not sure many people would have seen). Sometimes its not a mistake - its just that your opponent makes a masterful move (and when you can fly 8, teleport then cast.. its darn close to impossible to make it so you can never get him to be nearest target.

Tho If I was going to tie an IG to something, the DD isnt a bad choice.

Here is my report:

First: As always, I didn't have time to practice. I'm not certain how much longer I am going to be able to remain competitive with this game playing every other month, but I love it, so I'll continue to try.

SO, I watched several games on vassal as I tried to decide what to run. I was initially impressed with a build that doubtofbudda had piloted:

Ryld
Red Sam
Orc Champ x2
Wardrummer
Hyena x2

And despite much machinations on my part, had settled on that band as of Thursday night as THE band I would play (with the Teleporter as my map of choice).

Friday dawned, warm, and sunny, and with it, my mind wandered... Last time I piloted a CE band was at the qualifier last year, and I went 3-2. I also started to think about all those Hill Giants that were sure to show up. 2 swings from a HGB kills a Champ. Hmmmmm

So, I again thought through my options. Literally at 3:00 pm I thought again of the archmage. I'm SO comfortable playing with him. Next I thought with remore about how controlling the board was so much more difficult now than in the past (8 activations vs 12...), and then my mind wandered again... HGB likely to show up in large numbers.... GreyCloaks and +5 damage to Giants... Minions....

I came up with the following:

Archmage
IM
1/2 Ogre Barbarian
3x Greycloak Rangers
3x Wolves
1 Xeph

10 activations, and some serious HGB hate...

Still, I went to TJ's with both warbands in hand, and it wasn't until I arrived that I decided to play. I had helped to talk Striderlotr into playing his GAS band, in large part because he was familiar with it. I wasn't familiar with my CE band...

I knew I'd have trouble on the teleporter map, but what the heck right! I choose the Dragon Temple as my map of choice. It didn't hurt me much (possibly 10 total damage if my opponent nerf's my acid arrows), but could help keep me alive in some key situations.

Round one: Jesse Robider

I've played Jesse several times, as he lives up in NH. Jesse was also counting on a lot of CE, and hoped that low saves would make his day.

He played: (from memory)
Balor
Warduke
Wardrummer
Quaggoth
2x Orc Warrior

I was happy to win Map Initiative!

I was able to do a quick 15 damage on the drummer from an EMM, and could have quick cast an Acid Arrow to take him out, but was afraid to use my quick cast in the first round. I was fortunate with my activation control, Jesse moved the balor to Safety down in the Blue dragon area of the temple, but that left Warduke exposed to my Greycloaks. I made sure to put all my fodder out front, not wanted warduke for force morale on any of my key pieces... turns out, I didn't need to worry to much.

I was able to force morale on Warduke between the Archmage (now using his quick cast), and my Greycloaks. Warduke failed his check, and was off the board. I was well spread out, and the Balor had to double move just to base some figures.

Turn 3 came around, and the 1/2 ogre moved up and killed the drummer, and it was just a matter of time at that point. Sword on the balor, and spread out. The balor eventually took over a greycloak, and of all things, a wolf, but he too failed his morale check.

1-0

Round 2: Pat Lynch!

Pat wasn't too pleased to see my hate band so early in the tourney. His band:

2x Hill Giant
Tiefling
3x Orc Warrior
Quaggoth
Hyena

I was again happy to win Map Initiative.

I'm not certain what Pat's plan was, but a little bit of conservative play would have helped him early on. He decided to get his HGB up front and personal, so rather than staying towards the top of the map (he selected the fire temple as the place to set up, so that one of his victory area's granted him resist 5 to my acid arrows), he can down underneath, which gave me a big target for my GCR's at the end of turn 1, and, having won initiative, the start of Turn 2. If I recall correctly, I hit 2 for 2 at the end of round 1 for 20 damage, 3 for 4 (with a critical) for 35, , and then 1-2, followed by an EMM to force morale. HGB failed morale and was off the board. Pat was pretty stunned, and annoyed at the failed check. Fact was, he was running whether a Drummer had been there or not (Pat having rolled a 3 on morale).

Pat's dice then just ran away... He moved his other HGB up, and based a GCR, and my 1/2 Ogre. in his next 4 attacks, he missed 3 times, and was only able to kill the GCR. Meanwhile the based GCR still hit twice for 20 damage!

I never needed a sword, with the HGB tied up, and unable to chase the Archmage, I was able to clear off the balance of his band (sans the Tiefling), and eventually Pat's 2nd giant failed morale as well, and that was it.

2-0

Part 2 in a bit (though you can read about most of my round 5 match up above.

Fair enough. It seemed like Matt was aware of what I was going to have to do, he had maneuvered very carefully so that there was no place i could teleport to without having a different figure be the closest target. Perhaps he forgot about the GMA, as I said, the LoS I choose was awfully narrow, probably as narrow as the one that let me take the game from John the Elder at GenCon.

Its good that you chose to go with the Archmage over Ryldfecta. Further testing on my part determined it was a sub-optimal build. Anyway, congratulations for making #3!

The G Spot

04/03/2006 5:47 PM
Here's my tounry report for what it's worth. First a little background

I like to experiment with stuff. As a result my tourny finishes are, shall we say, less than impressive. I therefore decided after talking with Ack to go with a solid Tier 1 band. I was anxious to find out if it was my warband building skills that sucked or my play skills. Anyway, about a week prior to the NE Open I perused the skirmish forum looking for a band that I liked and one that was also solid. Here's what I chose...........

Rakshasa
Helmed Horror
Zakya Rakshasa
Duergar Champion x2
Blue
Goblin Skirmisher x2
Map Mushroom Cavern

My first match was against.....
26. Daniel Dembrosky (CG 1-4)
Moon Elf Fighter
Wand Expert
Renegade Warlock x3
Wizard Tactician
Map Tomb of Queen Peregrine

Daniel is Zoons oldest son and a really great kid. He was able to ping my helmed horror and Zakya quite a bit with his Renegade Warlocks, but once I closed for melee with my hitters it was a foregone conclusion that I had the game. Once I based and eliminated his Moon Elf Fighter, the fight was won.
1-0

My second match was against
23. Eric Buck (LE 1-4) ickthegreat is his handle here.
Inspired Lieutenant
Duergar Champion x3
Flameskull x2
Kobold Miner x2
Map Mithral Mines

I was a little concerned about his 3 D Champs at first. His random Kobold Miner placement netted him some early victory points. My blue took care of that rather quickly. One of the only times the blue actually did something all day. More on him later. The highlight of this match for me was when I was able to get my HH behind his Insp Lt and with help from one of my D Champs, destroy his commander in one turn, denying her the possibility of getting back any hit points.
The flameskulls proved a bit of a nuisance but not a real threat.
2-0

My third match was against
7. James Vaughn (CG 3-2)
Brass Samurai
Aspect of Kord
Rikka, Angelic Avenger
Wand Expert
Healer
Xeph Warrior
Map Broken Demongate

I would just like to say now that I HATE THE ASPECT OF KORD!!! [:(!]
I don't know what it is about this guy but I have the hardest time against him. I played this match particularly crappy and the Kord/ Brass Sam combo just tore me to pieces. I made the mistake of getting in close to Kord too soon and before being able to eliminate his commander. Whirlwind sucks!
2-1

My fourth match was against
8 Corey Stanhope (CG 2-3)
Drizzt, Drow Ranger
Rask, Half-Orc Chainfighter
Guen
Nebin, Gnome Illusionist
Redgar, Human Fighter
Lidda, Halfling Rogue
Map Unknown

I've never actually played against Drizzt. His unique strategy proved some good synergy with the various pieces. Nebin with his blur made this match annoying because of the conceal checks. I'll be honest here, I got lucky in this match because I didn't play very well. I rushed into combat too soon and as a result got several of my pieces eliminated. The match came down to, are you ready for this, my blue attacking Rask. Rask only had ten hp left, my hitters were all dead and my Rakshasa was out of spells, the Blue stepped up an CRITTED RASK!, then made the conceal check. (blur from Nebin) I was amazed, but the Blue hitting and killing Rask netted my this victory.
3-1

My final match was against
15. Mark Saleeba (CE 2-3)
Tiefling Captain
Hill Giant Barbarian
Chimera
Fiendish Girralon
Orc Berserker
Orc Warrior x2
Map Unknown

The HGB scares the hell out of me and I'm lucky I only faced one all day. I knew this match would come down to eliminating his HGB and that's exactly what happened. I moved cautiously at first hoping he would commit his HGB. I set up my forces and waited. He moved up the HGB and it was ON! My 2 D Champs and HH took the brunt, one D Champ fled the scene but was able to rally next turn. I held my Zak Rak back to protect my

WotC - making me wish more and more every day for a return to the TSR days. :(
I fought the snark and the snark won. I'm baaaaaaaaaaack!

So why is it, do any of you suppose, that LG was played only by one person when it is currently so strong?

it was played by two people (theres a typo in the bands)

why? cause alot of people know the strength of HGB and wanted to see it for themselves.

Tourney report Part 2:

Round 3 Vs Steve Feori

Steve was running HGB:

HGB x2
Wardrummer
Tiefling
Orc Warrior

While I had a certain amount of hope in my match up against Pat Lynch (of getting at least one of 2 morale checks), I was much more nervous about this matchup, as it seemed like it would take much better luck to get the Giants to rout....

Once again, i won Map Initiative (Hmmm 3 in a row, sounds like a trend!).

Steve set up on the Fire temple area. I did have some optimism that I could control the flow with my 2:1 activation advantage. Steve Moved a Giant over to the Victory area near Tiamat, and kept his other well shielded. Unlike my match against Pat, I found myself having to make a bunch of double moves in round 1. I move my screeners off, believing that I had successfully block out entrances to my backfield.

Side note: I'm sure I'll get some sympathy from players in a similar situation from myself. Those of us who are pretty good, but who can't play all the time, MUST be vigilant. I made just one significnat mistake all day, and it happened at the end of round 1 against Steve. I place the Archmage against a corner of a wall, and believed that if Steve Double moved to base him, I'd still have cover and could get away. My mistake, one which the confusion about AoO and reach clouded my recollection of the rule. The Archmage didn't have COVER, because of the large base... I'll not forget again. To stay competitive you MUST learn from these kinds of mistakes!

Well, you can guess what happened, one HGB moved up to clear one of the screeners, allowing the other to run down the back corridor and base the archmage (and IM).

I took the AoO, he made his conceal check, but thankfully, I made my Morale. I Mordy sworded the giant, and D-Doored away. Steve was very skill full with his follow up moves, placing his other HGB such that no matter what the Archmage did, he would be vulnerable to basing if I lost initiative in round 4. So, round 3 was spent peppering the giants where I could, but my pocket had collapsed. Eventually I D-Doored the archmage to a position that would take a long double move from either giant to base me. If I could win initiative (now without my IM), I could get some damage done with the Archmage, and move out of threat range.

it wasn't to be. He was base, and once again, I had to try to step away, he hit, and made teh conceal check.

In the end, it was CLOSE.

HGB 1 had 5 H.P.'s left ( and a sword on his head)

HGB 2 had 40 H.P's left

Had Steve not collected Tile points I had a mathmatical chance of winning the following round, but it would have required at least one 20...

Alas, 2-1!

Round 4 15. Mark Saleeba
Tiefling Captain
Hill Giant Barbarian
Chimera
Fiendish Girralon
Orc Berserker
Orc Warrior x2

Mark had justen gotten pounded as well, so we were both a little down. I again won Map Initiative, and again set up on the White Dragon temple.

Mark moved his Berserker of towards teh vicotry area, but I took it out with an EMM. This put Mark in a tough spot. He'd start off down on point, and was never able to get over that. He decided to rush me at the start of round 2.

The HGB ended up right next to the exit. He based 2 GCR's, and I then came in with the 1/2 giant, and a wolf or a flank. I realized to late, that the wolf prevented the giant from Routing. I had to be very careful at that point. With the Chimera and Girallon a round behind, I knew I had to act fast. The Wolf attacks, and then backed away (miraculously the HGB rolled a 1 on the AoO). Between the Archmage, GCR's (still doing 10 in melee!), and the 1/2 giant, I was able to force morale. The HGB failed and fled.

Mark followed up with a line effect which hit my GCR's, but they both made the Save. The damage start to mount on the Chimera and Girallon. The Chimera made one last move to force morale checks with the roar. One GCR ran, But that was it. Dual Acid arrows took down the Chimera, and the Girallon ran off.

Victory points were about 200-40.

3-1

I was once again feeling pretty good. 3-1 meant that I was in line for a shot a top 4! I REALLY wanted one of those Runelord Chainmail figs...

Round 5: Matthew Bachtold

Dwarven Defender
Iron Golem
Sacred Watcher
Hill Dwarf
2x Xorn
2x Shield wall soldiers

For the 5th time in a row, I won map initiative, and also was able to set up in my starting area of choice, the White Dragon Temple. Matt and I were both thrown for a loop, as he was used to keeping the Iron Golem back, whiile I was used to being able to actually do SOMETING with my warband.

Against the Iron golem I could do the following: IM +7 for 10 magic damage (10% chance of hitting). 1/2 Giant +12 for 15 (because it was non-magic) damage (45% chance of hitting), and 2 Empowered Acid Arrows for a total of 40 damage.

There was NO way for me to kill the Iron Golem!

I knew what I needed to do, get the Archmage into the backfield, and get a mordy's sword onto the Dwarven Defender. 75 Hit Points, that means 5 rounds...

Round one went by, I was able to do 5 damage to the Sacred Watcher, then the Iron Golem got out front to protect everyone.

I watched for openings, but it seemed clear that Matt knew how to defend his defender...

2nd round, on his first move, Matt left a minute opening, but it left me VERY vulernable. I could GMA, Move Teleport, and Sword, but it left him with most of his activations still to go, and the archmage unable to get away.

I took the shot, got into a corner and did my thing. He based me with the Defender, Xorn and Sacred Watcher. I made morale, moved away, and the critical on the Defender killed the Archmage...

From there it was a matter of making sure I collected tile points, and played conservatively to make sure he couldn't kill the balance of my band before the dwarven defender died.

It took a full 2 rounds before Matt could engage with anything, and 3 for the Iron Golem. I had split my force, 1/2 Oger 2 GCR's, 2 wolves, and teh Xeph on the Blue Dragon Temple, the IM, andlast GCR and wolf on the other side. Those 3 slipped away to take out his Hill Dwarf (who had collected 10 Victory points), and though he killed most everything else, I was able to JUST squeak out a win as the Defender died...

I ended up in 3rd, and actually got the Chainmail figure I wanted most (The 1/2 Orc Fighter...).

Thanks to TJ's, Pat Lynch, and Matt Morrissette (Runelord)!!

I edited the first few posts to include the new information about maps people used, as well as to correct Matt Bachtold's band from LE to LG. I then corrected the faction records to reflect this.

ROFLMAO.... You'll find dozens of mistakes in there, the comma is NOT what I was fixing, I spelled Matt's name wrong, and I thought that SHOULD be fixed.

I now have 3 Runelord repaints... I'm very happy about that.

A brief summary of my matchups for those interrested in the choice of two Orc Champs versus a second HGB.

My theorys: People would be trying to maximize the Orc Wardrummer. I expected to see bands including OC's, Ravagers, Eye's, Red Samurai and of course HGB's. I also thought I'd be seeing a lot of HH's, DC's and Couatl/Marut bands.

I chose the OCs because I thought the extra attacks (4 per round versus the HGB's 2) would give me a relative advantage versus the Higher AC Lawful figs. Also, I thought I'd have some advantage on the Teleporter map with the extra activation to cover a port site. I completely overlooked the fact that an opposing HGB will morale check my OC's with just one hit (I know, Duh!). Anywho, with far too little testing, no reliable intuition and a "choose heads" from Mrs. Rune, that's what I went with.

Match 1 - Adam Zaremba

2x Archmage
1x Xeph

This was a huge surprise for me. I was not expecting a band like this to be there and didn't know how well he'd be able to maneuver the spell casters around and what kind of damage the swords could do before I could pin him down. I shouldn't have worried. The teleporter map is DEATH to a low activation Archmage band. Nowhere to hide. I covered the porters on round 1 then, forced my opponent to use activations in round two before moving in with the speedy hitters on one of his (already activated) mages. Boom, boom, out go the lights. Lather rinse and repeat in round three.

Lesson: Huge map advantage.

1-0

Match 2 - Matthew Bachtold

Dwarven Defender
Iron Golem
Sacred Watcher
Xorn x 2

This matchup I felt better about. I knew my OC's or Giant could force routs on the Xorns with only 1 hit. I would need to assasinate the commander as getting through the IG would be long, painful and probably misguided. I lost map initiative and had to play on the Tiamat map with the protection zones. I set up in red. I was able to use speed to get an early advantage in victory points. Round two, I was able to get a charge on one Xorn and end in the Circle by the exits. I should have changed to intimidating beat first, but feared retaliation in round three before I could change the beat again. Bad move. I hit the Xorn and he got an adjusted 21 on the MC. Lastly, I brought the HBG close enough to attack a fodder piece without basing him and keeping the OC's between him and the IG. Round 3, I won a critical initiative allowing me to activate my (now surrounded) OC before he could be eliminated. I killed off the injured Xorn and cleaved into the other. Once again a MC between 20 and 23. Wrong drum beat again. Next, I ran the HGB around his left flank and was able to reach around a pillar to attack the Defender. He saved morale, but the battle was lost. 150 HP versus the Defender who couldn't move away without taking an AOO due to reach.

Lesson: Reach and speed are an amazing combination of flexibility.

2-0

Match 3 - Eric Buck

3x Duergar Champion
2x Flameskull
Inspiring Lieutenant
2x Kobold Miners

This match proved nearly fatal. I lost map initiative and he chose the Mithril Mine. I set up on the cave-in side with the split start areas. His two miners did not score for him. I split my army hoping he would do the same. He did. I attacked down the left corridor at the bulk of his army with my first OC in round two by charging a DC. I ran the HGB down into the more easily accessable scoring area (nearest his exit squares) to base one of his Flameskulls and then whiffed on the conceal to leave it alive. I kept the other OC back for flexibility and let him spend his activations smooshing Orc Warriors. Then woeful round 3 began. He won initiative and double hit with the based DC. He risked a lot by bringing the comander close enough for the agony and a Morale check. Ooops. I failed the check. Running OC ensued. On the other side of the map I attacked his kobold with my last OW to provide a charge lane with my other OC at another DC. The Champ misses the conceal and now I have a problem. His activation hits twice on the champ. THen he starts moving his last DC towards the OC and HGB. I paniced. I moved the HGB to base the DC and pound him. It works (I hit and rout him) but in basing him (which I didn't need to do), I left the other flameskull unbased. Now he moves and Fireballs my OC and HGB. Once again, I fail MC. Doh! Fortunately things pick up from there. I rout his other healthy DC the next round before he can position the Inspired Lieutenant to get it into command and I stumble to a victory with only 20 HP left on the HGB and a healthy wardrummer left.

Lesson: Erm... Did I mention reach is good. I should have learned that earlier.

Match 4 - Steve Foeri

2x HGB
Tiefling
Wardrummer
OW

Low activation band and I win map and side initiative. I should win easily, right? Nope. Wrong. Dead wrong. I take the side with the shorter route to teleporters. Steve moves one HGB to the top accessable teleporter and then the second goes through it into the room below it and into his victory area. I cover teleporters. Then he moves his tiefling up to the top corner of the hallway where it can see the HGB in the scoring area and is only two steps away from the other. The rest of my round is covering porters and getting resistance beat going (We both did).

I win initiative in round two. I decided agression might pay off. I port my HGB into his scoring room, but instead of engaging the HGB, I move up and attack the commander. Splat! Now I move an OC into the room and charge the HGB in the scoring area. I hit, it giggles. His turn. He activates the HGB in the scoring area and hits the OC basing him. Morale check. Morale failure. Going... going... gone. Did I mention I forgot that in the mirror match I would MC in 1 and die in 2 hits? oof. Now he moves out of the scoring area and cuddles up below and basing my HGB. With his other HGB he moves one square to flank my HGB and hits only once. THis is my chance. I should port to the now open teleporter with my other champ (which would now be flanking him) and take two mighty blows on the HGB. For some reason, I didn't. I can't explain it. Instead, I moved the Drow comander into the scoring room for help on future morale and followed him with an OW to attack his injured HGB for 15 with the CFX while flanking it. Steve is too good a player to miss my incredibly goofy error, he moved his only OW onto the porter with is next activation, closing it off for me. I am forced to amble sheepishly into the room with my other OC at his injured Giant and attack only once.

To add insult to injury, Steve wins initiative the next round (even without the commander) and beats the living bah-jeebers out of my HGB forcing a MC which I promptly fail. Game got ugly after that.

Lesson: HGB's kill OC's quickly and Zoons is a boob. I already knew that last part though (see "hall of shame" entry below for proof).

3-1

Match 5 - James Vaughn

AOK
Whirlwind Samurai
Rikka
Xeph Warrior
Healer
Wand Expert
other stuff

This match was a blur. Literally. He won Map init and chose broken demongate. Rounds 1 and 2 have us positioning for the inevitable conflict in the center of the map. Round 3 I win initiative. I move one OC to hit and kill a fodder piece enabling my HGB to move 10 spaces and attack with reach on his commanding Samurai. NATURAL 20. Dead. Kord deals his 30 and Rikka flies in for next round's pain. I switch to intimidating drummer. I then maneuver the last OC into his backfield and hit the Healer and cleave into the wandsman. Crit again. Next round I win initiative and rout Rikka with the OC that paved the way for the HGB. He concedes.

Lesson: Crits are good and can take control of any game.

4-1

Thanks to all of my opponents. Great competitiors, fun people to play with, every one.

The G Spot

Well, mine was my first ever tourny report and I was going on memory. I didn't take any notes so it might not be of much use to most vets here. However, I was sure to avoid getting guyf'ed. At least i hope I did. [:D]
