Come test out your warbands next Tuesday @ Games of Berkeley!

www.gamesofberkeley.com

We start (approximately) at 6:30pm and generally get in two to three rounds. This will be a DCI sanctioned event, so beware! As we saw with the Utah Qualifier, NorCal players are a force with which to be reckoned!

As always - totally free, a lot of fun, lots'o trading to be done, and great League prizes to be had!

Report to follow event. Hope to see you there, -Ben

Round 1 (we only get in two rounds on a week night [V]) between zdrake and our boy Paul Mills saw an interesting LE v. LE match, both including Helmed Horrors.

zdrake played

90 HH x 2
41 Dark Naga
39 Gauth
20 Kobold Sorcerer
09 Kobold Miner x 3

Paul Mills played

90 HH x 2
69 War Troll
34 Urthok
06 Kobold Miner x 2

They faced off on the Broken Demongate. I won't mention the Kobold Miners because all but one of them was killed in the first round and the final one during the 2nd round.

Zdrake set up on the "good" side and placed both his HH in the forward starting area while his Dark Naga remained behind in the back starting area with the Gauth and the Kobold Sorcerer. That first round Zac realized his mistake of not keeping the HH's by the Kobold Sorcerer for Magic Weapons and not placing the Gauth up front for early lines of sight - so he spent the first round bringing the HH's back a bit while moving his Kobold Sorcerer forward. Paul moved his hitters slowly forward while keeping out of potential line of sight.

The game progressed slowly at that point, neither team scoring victory points. Paul had a chance to base the Gauth w/ a HH, but didn't take it, and eventually battle was joined on the "lower" breach in the wall between the "good" and "evil" sides of the map. This is where zdrake had opted to play out the battle, so his 2 HH based Pauls WarTroll and one of his HH. Paul moved up his Urthok to support, but unfortunately placed him where Zac's Naga could use a lightning bolt against both the Troll and the Urthok, the latter ran away. That battle ended with Zac loosing an HH and Paul losing a war troll and having Urthok routed. Paul's remaining HH probably could have taken out Zac's remaining HH, but with Paul's Wartroll and Urthok gone, Zac was up on points - he had moved his Kobold Sorcerer to gather victory points for the final two rounds.

After the players told me about their match, I found I really liked the synergy between the HH and the Dark Naga, who can freely Lightning Bolt through the HH without affecting them. The Gauth is also still very strong, though this was a poor map for a player who depends on Line of Sight. Zac won that match and then he and I got to play during our second round.

So, my game v. zdrake. I had told them that I had played a band successfully at a tournament the weekend before, so I decided to stick with the same band. We rolled off for map and ended up playing on mine, Kings Road.

Right off the bat I got off a Legion's Undeniable Gravity, which, believe it or not, grounded both of his Helmed Horrors! Now that's just bad luck! He ran two of his Kobolds away from my Warforged Scout in the shared victory area, so my WS ran down to his other victory area to take out his third Kobold. My Rikka got a +3 to her saves before flying off to that shared victory area, securing me first round VPs and the rest of my band moved forward, as did his.

2nd Round he wins initiative (he won on the first round as well and when first to move his Kobold Miners away from my WS. I moved my SW up to score a quick kill on one of his KMs and to make him "closer" with regards to line of sight once Zac moved his Gauth forward (yes I know the Gauth has selective shot, but that's one more target!).

Zac saw an opportunity to capture multiple targets in a Lightning Bolt (Forest doesn't block Line of EFFECT!), but he failed the incorporeal roll on the Sacred Watcher, Rikka - with Save +8 - made her save taking no damage with her Resist Electricity 10 (which was good cause I had moved her exactly 7 spaces away from my Couatl), the Man at Arms coud've actually survived had I rolled a 14 or better, but didn't, and the Marut made it's save and took no damage. I then flew Rikka up to put 20 damage on the Naga. I moved my Marut up to be within Melee Reach 2 of the Naga, though this took his entire move. I then moved my Couatl up to Snakes Swiftness the Marut, dealing another 30 points to the Naga, who passed his morale save. The round ended with his HH running for my Cleric of Order off near my starting area. My Cleric of order cut and ran far enough to base my Couatl in a forest square. My WS kills a 2nd KM.

Round 3. Zac wins initiative again. He tries to bite Rikka with the Naga, missing, and one HH moves up and takes 15 HP outt amy CoO, but I pass my morale save. I then move my Sacred watcher up to flank the Naga, swing and hit for 10. No more Naga. Couatl then heals the CoO for 10 thus requiring Zac to crit with is last HH to kill the CoO. Zac, because of this, decides to move his 2nd HH to attack my Couatl. My Rikka then decides the Gauth has got to go and flies up to smack it for 20 (while still being within 6 squares of the Couatl). And I double move my Marut to base the Zac's 2 HHs, sandwiching them between my Couatl and the Marut. The CoO, in his Forest square, casts Greater Resistance on the Couatl, then moves away from the HHs and the Couatl, so that the Marut is the closest ally to the Couatl.

After that it's pretty much over. I won initiative for Round 4 and forced his Gauth to route with my SW, the AoO from Rikka killed it. An attack from my Marut, another due to snakes swiftness and another from Rikka put it down to 15HP. His Kobold Sorcerer did it's best to defend itself from my WS and SW. His HHs forced a morale on my Couatl, but I made it.

Round 5. Zac wins! He could kill the Couatl if he hits 3 more times with his HHs! But with AC 26 in cover Zac's HHs only manage to hit twice. Rikka destroys the damaged HH. The Marut and Couatl put another 60 points on the 2nd HH and the Couatl moves away. Game over.

I really like Zac's band, but this wasn't a good match up for him and losing flight for both his Helmed Horrors really didn't help. I hope you've enjoyed these summaries! Two weeks from now at Games of Berkeley - SANCTIONED EPIC !
