| The Montreal guys were very tough. I belive Phrank was undefeated going into the finals. I had a long drive back to the US so I didn't watch the top 4 play but I suspect he placed first.

| I finshed 11th at 3-3. [:(]
I do not have time for full report now, but here are some of what I remember:
There were 23 players.
1) At least x5 Marut warbands 2) Lots of LE warbands (multi Chraal & HH) 3) 2 duel HGB warband's, one with Drow Sgt, other with Tiefling(?) 4) 2 Other quad CE warbands I beleive 5) CE LRD & ZWD I believe was in final 4 6) Duel Wartroll was in final 4
Please correct if I am off and or add to this.

| 3-3 here as well
I played
Orc Champ x 4 Orc Wardrummer Tiefling Captain Hyena
My wins were versus a Marut warband on Drow Outpost, a LE Quad on Dragon Shrine and against another CE Quad (Ryld, EoG, OC x 2)
My losses were to Chralls with Gauth in the Dungeon of Blood, a LE with one Chrall, two helmed horrors, a blackguard on the Kings Road, and to the dual War Trolls
Highlights for me(or lowlights) were: In Defeating the Marut I needed and rolled an 19 followed up by another 19 (needed a 14) for the win. In the forest I failed to hit the Blackguard for like 5 or 6 consective rounds (only needed 11's!!), and missed 6 consective attacks on Urthok (commander for the two Wartrolls) | | Champion of the Kender ckissee - "providing TPK's since 2007" Albert Einstein never once said that if the bees disappeared, "man would have only four years of life left" but the theory is a scary prospect.

| I'm really interested in seeing all of what was played and especially the dual War Troll build. I've played one a couple times but it hasn't impressed me much.

Well that was unexpected. He lost to the 2x War Troll then?
I finished 6th.
I played
Human Blackguard Kobold Sorcerer Chrall 2x Helmed Horror 3x Kobold Miner Map: King's Road
I went 4-2. My first lost was to Phrank in round 3. Then I had to play Sirohk on round 5 (I think it's part 3 section 14 article 2 of the DCI rulebook that if you bring someone to a tournament you must play against them. [)]) and lost to him as well.
I'll be writing up a full report later today.

| 7th here, 4-2.
Played Marut, Couatl, Bodyguard, Cleric of Order, Standardbearer, Mialee, Jozan, Scout on the King's Road..
My best recollection of the rounds: 1: W vs CE HGB x2, BCoE, 3x Human Bandit; King's Road 2: W vs Marut, Couatl, WFBg, Sac W, CoY, 2x TW, StB; Drow Outpost 3: L vs LE 3x Chraal, Zak, HBg, Kobold M, 2x TW; Fane of Lolth 4: L vs LG Marut, Couatl, 2x Sacred Watcher, CoO, 2x TW, Aramil; King's Road 5: W vs CE LRD, ZWD, OR, OD, Orc Ber, Hyena; Field of Ruin 6: W vs LE DC x2, Zak, HH, Urthok, 2x TW, Myconid; King's Road
Not sure of opponents' names. Anyone have the full playoff information? I believe the regular 401/DG contingent did well. I agree, the Montreal players were very, very skilled. My opponent in round 3 especially...

He's really good, no doubt !
On another subject, I placed 5th, my tie-braker was 56.6667 Nightmoor who placed 4th had a 59.4444 tie-braker. I wonder if i could have made top 4 if my 4th round opponent hadn't drop.

That would be me. That was a quick, brutal match. I've never been a fan of (near) mirror-matches like that - they never seem as exciting as others - by that detracts nothing from Raland's victory. He played well and deserved the win.
I'd have given anything to have had my Orc Wardrummer in play, though (I let Shana, my wife, use it) as half my band routed off the board in a single round! Morale checks are the bane fo my DDM existence!
Congrats Raland, 3-3 is no small feat when the best in the nation are playing. [:)] | | Champion of the Gelatinous Cube. Nemesis of Gnomes and Dinosaurs.

| When you think about it dual War Trolls magic weaponed can kill quite a few concepts out there. Marut goes down in two rounds without much effort at all. I'm of course shocked that the Justice Archons could hit them though. Even with flank +12/+7 takes some good rolls. Lucky dice sometimes makes all the difference. Anyway I agree with Dave the variety of winning warbands is pretty varied so far this qualifier season. I think that's good because it means that we have more possibilities and a balanced game overall.

| Greetings guys, thanks to all the great and sportsmanlike players that showed up to the Toronto qualifier - especially our DDM brothers from Quebec - it was a fun, hard-fought tournament!
I took the dual War Trolls solely because I expected to face plenty of Marut bands without a bodyguard, and I believed that two boosted Trolls could kill the big guy. It worked, but I the day was still very tough due to the fact the 25-magic damage Trolls are hardly stellar against cheap, efficient hitters like Justice Archons and Duergars.
The Trolls also have several great qualities: - they take 4 hits from a Marut to kill; they only take 3 hits to kill a Marut; even if one dies, it's cheaper than a Marut so when the second one inevitably kills the big guy you're still on top; they take 5 hits from a CE beater to kill as long as you activate only once in between attacks; they are almost as hard to hit as Marut and regenerate; they seldom flee, and if they do it's often a good thing since they regenerate and are likely to rally; they have excellent ranged attacks that make a huge impact against any Chaotic bands (hitting Orc Champs from afar a coupla times is key in that matchup); and, of course, they are tre cool ;-).
Their bad qualities are rather obvious: slow, low damage per point paid, and eggs-in-one-basket problem against things like crits/stuns/paralysis/running off the board. Their hitpoints are also only average (though they of course look like hit-point monsters compared to Marut).
Phrank butchered me in the first game of the tourney when I made several key mistakes, but then lost our semi-final match due to some terrible rolls and the Troll's seeming inability to miss anything, including the Watchers.
I lost to Mark in the finals fair and square, though a more jaded player might say he got some damn lucky rolls, hehe (but then again, Phrank got very unlucky against me the game before, so I had it coming!).
There were plenty of Marut and Chraal bands running around, so it's only fitting that one of each showed up in the top 4! They are both excellent bands.
I have dubbed Mark's great LG band "Flying Circus" due to the high percentage of flying units coupled with the surprising nature of its composition given what conventional wisdom had dismissed. It's amazing how likely "lucky" rolls are when you've got dozens and dozens of attack pumping out because of high survivability. Mithril Mines was also a key to band, since it is very good for denying assault points to your opponent - Mark generally spent the first couple of turns patiently inching forward, killing off opposing assault grabbers, they shutting them out for the rest of the game, while having choice of what to swarm with his fliers. Well done!
Edit: Yes Iabete, I have to admit I was very worried about tie-breakers as well, since my third round opponent went 0-4 and dropped too! It's too bad top 8 didn't make it, instead of only top 4, since there were plenty of great players there that just lost out by a hair. I was very fortunate to squeak through to the finals.

My Warband: NAMED - Kool Kitty
Human Blackguard x2 Chraal x2 Zakya Rakshasa x1 Hobgoblin Warrior x1 Dire Rat x1 Timber Wolf
200 points 8 activations
MAP: Dungeon of Blood
Anyone who played against me and can help fill in the names and Maxmin’s ID please feel free to chime in with your thoughts.
FIRST MATCH (vs Sebastian (spelling?))
Opponents WB - HBG, x3 Chraal, x2 TimberWolf, x1 Kobolb Miner. MAP: Fane of Lolth
Lost map initiative and played on Fane of Lolth. Opponent bottled himself up behind Chraals and I could not get to him fast enough in 1 hour time limit. I also took long way around trying to take out his fodder / VP grabbers. On last round I had routed his HBG but he did not leave map. 1 more round and I might have pulled it off. Lost on points 38–20.
Record 0-1
SECOND MATCH (vs Jey)
Opponents WB – x3 Helmed Horror, Duergar Champ, Dark Moon Monk, x2 Timber Wolf, Kobold Miner. MAP: Don’t remember
Won map initiative and most other (& key) initiative’s versus commander-less warband. Played on Dungeon of Blood. Took out fodder and 1 HH and collected VP’s. My commander was based at end, but time ran out. Won on points 85-24.
Record 1-1
THIRD MATCH (vs Lauren)
Opponents WB – Teifling Captain, Orc Wardrummer, Eye of Grummsh, Orc Champ, Ogre Ravager, Xen’ Drik Champion, Troglodyte Thug, Timber Wolf. MAP: Magma Keep
Won map initiative and played on Dungeon of Blood. Opponent moved too far ahead of rest of force and left main figures all in line for my Chraals breath weapon, which I did with one Chraal. In the mean time I sent 1 Zayka after drummer and based in second round. I sent other Zakya after Tiefling in second round and also based and attacked. Won initiative and knocked drummer down to 5 hp. Drummer ran at full speed and ceased drumming (no more resistance). So my Chraal let loose with its breath weapon doing more damage. Opponents Eye had failed both saves and then was killed outright by 2 critical’s from my Chraal. Killed Tiefling and eventually routed Orc Champ. I did loose my Chraals to make points close, but still had both Zakya’s & HBG left in good health, and opponent had Ogre (hurting) & Xen Drik Champ left. Time ended with me ahead on points 158-108.
Record 2-1
FOURTH MATCH (vs Mark (eventual Qualifier winner))
Opponents WB – Cleric of Order, Couatl, Rikka, x2 Justice Archons, x2 Sacred Watchers, Man at Arms. MAP: Mithril Mines
Won map initiative and played on Dungeon of Blood. This was one of my funnest, most challenging, and frustrating matches. Rikka was on map at start in center / pit victory area. This forced me to move cautiously (probably too much so) on the first round. But, we both moved up for the confrontation. I ran a Zakya around and True Striked his CoO who subsequently routed off the board (barely). I protected my HBG 2nd round and went after Couatl, missing with True Strike (dang rolling one’s). He moved and my AoO’s at least hit. His 3 hitters (Rikka, JA’s) & SW surrounded my other Zak and took it out with help of Snakes Swiftness from Couatl. Over the next 3 rounds I sent my other Zak and eventually my Chraals at his Couatl to take it out and I proceeded to miss it, even with flanking, over my last 6 rolls and could not kill it (I think it only had 10 hit points left). DRATS! His hitters based my bare HBG (I gambled on taking out his Couatl in hopes that I would win initiative and re-protect my HBG, but missed with terrible rolls, the nature of the game). Game over at 201-66.
Record 2-2
FIFTH MATCH (vs Dan (XenoZepher))
Opponents WB – Human Blackguard, Kobold Sorcerer, x2 Helmed Horrors, Chraal, x3 Kobold Miners. MAP: Kings Road.
Won map initiative and played on Dungeon of Blood. Another great match as the two of us and our warbands have faced each other a number of times. It basically came down to winning some key initiatives, making some good rolls, killing one of his HH’s, and my Zakya taking out his HBG (and Chraal). A very good game. Points were 166-20.
Record 3-2
SIXTH MATCH (vs Martin (Torazin))
Opponents WB – Cleric of Order, Couatl, Marut, x2 Sacred Watchers, Aramil, Mialee
Won map initiative and played on Dungeon of Blood. One of my best and worst matches of all time. Play and learn I guess. My opponent was a very good player and I very much enjoyed this match, all except the outcome. Basically, I had eliminated all of of my opponents mini’s except for the Marut. I routed the Couatl, CoO, 1 SW, and killed Mialee, Aramil, Timber Wolf, and the other SW. I had my Wolf, both Chraals, 1 Zakya, and Hobgoblin Warrior left. He was chasing my HBG and I simply twice miscounted his movement that left an opening for his Marut to base my HBG (who at the time had 40 hp left and had already made his MC). I should have blocked it off but did not as I thought he could not reach me and my HBG was protected. Oh well. I then decide to take the AoO and run away. Nope. He rolled a 20, critical on my HBG and game for him. Points at this time 186-166 (it was 166-50 my favor). Win some loose some.
Record 3-3.
I had a great time and met some of the cool Maxmin’s folks (Sulaco, Phrank, other who’s names I cannot remember). Also, thanks to Dueling Grounds for holding the event. It was well organized and well judged.

| The main reason I took Urthok was because of his cheapness. Taking him instead of either the Naga, HBG, Inspired Lieutenant, etc. allowed me to take a Dark Moon Monk. Without the Monk to MW the Trolls, your odds against Marut bands are much worse.
Of course the +2 attack is great against Marut too, but usually only after you've killed the Standard Bearer.

| After seeing the two-troll warband, I thought that the Rakshasa might be better as you get bigby and all, but also sonic resistance from most Marut/Couatl warbands.
Then, after a few games, I came to the conclusion that you have to choose between activations or magic weapons.
Also, since many marut/couatl will run with a standard bearer, the Rak's commander effect becomes pretty useless :(
