Most people that play in these things have spent months playtesting and formulating warbands and strategy; Me not so much. I had no clue until I saw the band that finished second at the Montreal Qualifier. I said that is unique and it did finish second. Can't be too band. I felt confident I could pilot it without much thought since it was a melee beatdown that is my style of play. Ask me to play a tech warband is like asking a mute to speak or the blind to see.

Saturday morning my girlfirend and I roll on to Hardee's for the Pre-Qualifer breakfast at Hardee's to consume a Loaded Omelet Biscut. Which was much needed after my night of beer drinking. You guys are probally thinking, "What beer drinking the night before a big tournament?" That's right my friends it's a proven fact that the Rok plays better when he is hung over. As you can see from the title this may not necessarily be the case.

Afterwards, we go to the Shop to register for the Qualifier. I fill out all the paraphernalia that goes on with these things. Then I proceed to harass Kitten, Keith's wife, telling her to speed up the processes so we can begin.

First round I played Mark Moneypenny from Louisville that fielded the standard dual HGB with Tiefling Capt. I was worried. Would my luck hold that those beasts wouldnt hit the trolls. I won map and played on Dragon Shire and placed in the Fire Blessing area. I played it safe and only brought the trolls out to pop a couple of shots off at the giants. Mark brought the giants to bare on me. I said it's now or never and engaged. I was able to clog the giants up in a corner passage so I could get both trolls on one giant while the other one waited for his beating. The High AC proved true for the giants where Mark only hit them once or twice and the Regen powered them back up. There was the first win of the day and I figured I go into the next round to play a Marut band that I knew without a shadow of a doubt I could decimated.

Fate would have it that I didn't have to play a Marut but those damn Helmed Horrors that run in packs of three piloted by Jerry Damage. I'm thinking if I get lucky I can beat Mr. Damage. Fate usually has it that his dice turn south when he plays me. First rounds we do that MW thing to negate the draw backs of the figs we were using. I place up just shy from the far edge of the magic circle. This was my mistake in the game. Jerry was able to get his HH into the circle and just wail on me. He did have some crappy rolls but they were negated by the circle. Now for the definitive moment of this match. Those darn HH crit-ed on me three times and just killed the staying power of the trolls against those walking tin cans. Now the salt in the wound was that forth crit that came from the Dark Moon Monk. How embarrassing is that. Oh yeah and I failed three out of the four Bigby’s. My dice out played me this match.

Third round I was excited to play someone that wasn’t from KY. That was until I saw George Estill’s tri-HH band. Once again I said to myself this is the worst possible match-up for the dual trolls. Once again I won map initiative and chose my Dragon Shrine map. After we did that magic weapon thing I moved my trolls to the far edge of that sacred circle to pretty much completely block the HHs from getting that added bonus. There we sat each of in a sacred circle attempting to fire pot shots at each other. I have learned to temper my aggressive tendencies and said to myself, “Buddy you are gonna have to make the first move.” The flameskull moved up and launched its fireball then ran off for tile points. I only suffered the minimum possible damage. I felt great about that outcome and then finally one of my volleys found it’s mark. This triggered George into action and the HHs charged the trolls. After that we fought tooth and nail. The large duergar moved up to threathen Urthok and the swapped some blows. At that point I kow I had to take that thing out or be screwed. There I sat thinking should I take the swing with the troll that would hit but could I make the conceal roll. I am notoriously bad at missing those conceal rolls. I said it and made the attack roll. Hit. Rolled the conceal. Made it. One dead duergar. The next round I missed my attack on the HH. Taking the time to kill the duegar was possible the only mistake I made in the game because I took to long trying to kill that second HH. I attempted to flank with Urthok in the hopes that he would deal a little damage like he did in the match against Damage. No such luck and Urthok when down like a cheap hooker. There I sat. I looked at the board then I looked up at George. George looked at me then looked at the board and said, “I hate to do this.” “Damn you got me.” George saw that he needed to bug out or one of his HHs wasn’t gonna survey the next two hits from the troll. He ran and I couldn’t catch them. That was one of the best games I have ever played in my DDM history.

The girlfriend and I went to Wendy’s for some lunch and got back just in time. There I was to face Codemonkey who I love to torment because well he hasn’t quite matured in his ability to play the game. He makes mistakes. Not big ones but mistakes none-the-less. Monkey was playing a Coutal/Kord band that looked so tempting to be chewed up by some Wartrolls. I felt the sweet tantalizing taste of redemption that would be just a breath away. Blah, blah. I won map and such again. I moved the wartroll up to take position to choke off Kord from the rest of my troops. There Kord would have to take the assault of the trolls. Initiative was declared and the Satyr sounded his Pipes. I rolled a twenty and just grin. The trolls missed. Mutherfraggin not moving Urtok to grant CFx and Cat’s Grace on Kord. Then a crit later and one troll was gone and the rest was down hill. I say the match was over in less than ten minutes.

Fifth round was finally a Marut/Coutal band. I felt that second win within my grasps. I won map and setup but this time places down in the Cold Blessing thinking it game me room to move and longer for the Marut to get to me. Jacob placed his Forged Scout in the Acid Blessing corner so I just moved the trolls up and made short work of the little admantine fellow. I did this because oddly Jacob moved everything down towards the Electricity Blessing corner. Then I moved the trolls down to clog a hallway and make the Marut come to me. The Marut came and we traded licks. I thought I could sacrifice Urtok to the might of the Inevitable to get those needed free smacks on the Marut. What did I do? Roll a one. Cripes. The Marut laid waste to Urthok and then pulled back. I went after him and then kept missing. Finally took him down. Jacob and I figured up the points. His 198 to my 180. I signed deeply. Shook his hand and said great game. Once again thinking I have the game in hand so I don’t worry about tile points cost me.

Sixth round before me and no change at some free swag from WotC might as well play it out like a man. Truly in the Loser’s Lounge now I played a fella with Death Slaad/Blue Slaad/Eye band. Interesting twist on what Johnny.Quest was playing. I was scared regardless. This guys luck was in the crapper after the first five rounds I geuss. He marched the Eye up to the trolls and hit one of them. The trolls answered back with two hits and the poor Eye said screw this jazz then ran off the board. The two slaads positioned on the sacred circle. I had no care whether I won or lose so I sent the trolls up. Here is were I felt so bad. I took out the Blue Slaad and had the Death Slaad left. That darn Death Slaad should be melted down for missing six attacks in a row. One troll crit-ed and that was the game.

And that was my account of my stroll thru the Loser’s Lounge.

we have some guality players in Richmond and I usually find myself on the top of the heap. These darn Pre-releases and Qualifers are a thorn in my side.

I'm happy that I played my best but that darn d20 always screws me in the end.
