Tonight we had 6 players show for 3 matches of Epic nastiness. I came in 2-1 playing a warband I thought was just for fun, but proved surprisingly resilient.

My band:
Dragon Totem Hero (non-Epic)
Large Silver Dragon
Large Red Dragon
Large Bronze Dragon
Large Copper Dragon
Large Blue Dragon
Aasimar Favored Soul
Halfling Wizard
Map: Hellspike

First match: vs. Skip on Hellspike
Huge Red, Large Red, HGB x2, BB Champ, Orc Warrior, Hyena x2

I got to teach the game to an RPGer who had never played minis before. His band was built for him on the fly by our best player, Nick. I started by explaining the map features, routing and rallying, commanders, and basic strategies. Then we got down to it, and I ended up getting clobberated. For someone who's never played before, he played like a pro - he lured me over to his side of the smoke, took out my entire backfield with one well-placed Huge fire breath, and just beat me into the ground. At the end, it was my LSD vs the Huge Red and one HGB, with his LRD camped on a VA.
0-1

Second match: vs my brother on Field of Ruin
Drizzt, Ulmo, Epic Rikka, Rask, Archmage, IM, Crow Shaman, Wild Elf Raider

I won this one on points, mostly due to Jeff being overconfident and moving his AM in way too close. He Scouted Drizzt into a VA on my half of the map, and Waylaid Rikka in right next to him. After his GMA, we ended up clustered together near enough to my start area that routing meant death for me. I did manage to get off one well-placed Paralysis breath, freezing both Rask and the AM. After that, I sacrificed my Red to auto-crit the AM, even though it meant being flanked by Ulmo and Rikka. Rikka killed my Blue quickly, and Ulmo trashed my Red, but those were the only two critters I lost. I knew I could never chew through Rikka's hp, so I ignored her completely and went to work on things I could actually kill. The Red took out the AM and Crow before he bit it. The Silver, Hero and Bronze took out Drizz't... thanks to a great piece of sportsmanship on Jeff's part. My Hero critted Drizzt for 30, which would have killed him, but I failed Conceal. As I was planning out my next activation, I remembered the Aasimar's Illuminator! Jeff let me rewind to the crit to kill Drizzt, and ultimately that's what put me ahead on points.

Had the game gone on much longer, Rikka could have single-handedly killed all my Dragons. Lucky me, we finished with my Hero on a VA and only 2 Dragons dead, vs his Drizzt, AM and Crow.
1-1

Third match: vs Herb on Hellspike
YM, GM x4, Huge Gold, CoO, T-Wolf
GAS is a killer. The Huge Gold is a killer. Both of them together are a nightmare! Fortunately, I had the best possible counter for the GAS half - breath weapons that ignore his high AC. The way it played out is that my breath weapons trashed his GAS, while his Huge Gold missed one important attack that kept my Silver in the game with 15 hp. His Gold missed the save on the Silver's cold breath, taking 70; the Silver made the save on his Gold's fire breath, taking 50. Herb risked his YM to try to take out my Hero, and that also didn't go his way; I was able to flank with a rallied Bronze, and the Hero and Bronze ate the YM.
2-1

I won $5 store credit and picked out a Reaper mini to sit on my workbench and wait his turn to be painted. Only 5,000 minis ahead of him...

Shoulda moved the Young Master to the Victory Area, where he could still give my remaining two Giths his CFx and counter the tile points Orion was able to grab near the end. It would've been closer but the game still would have depended on killing his LSD (10% of missing that third attack with the Huge Gold, so naturally I roll a 2).

For my part, I can't see any Epic scenario where the combo of non-epic Elminster and 3 Archmages on the King's Road can EVER lose*. That band has NINE castings of Mordenkainen's Sword (four of them potentially Swift), not to mention the barrage of Empowered Magic Missiles and empowered Melf's Acid Arrows to clear support pieces. As long as they're in the forest they cannot be prevented from moving or casting, and even Spell Resistance is no protection thanks to Spell Penetration.

*Unless the player controlling the band is inept.

I might have had an interesting game vs Nick's Archmage-o-rama. They have a fantastic chance of failing that DC 21 Paralysis breath, and if I can get even two in the same cone... plus all my other breaths ignore SR, AC and Conceal, and I don't recall Elm or AM having elemental resistance. Plus, Dragons have the hp to eat a Sword or two if they must (but not 7!).

Plus, 5 Large Dragons just looks PRETTY! [:D]

Our last Epic was won with an Epic Elminster band back up with archmages. he's even sicker on the king's road map.

Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested!

My point exactly -- the mere existence of King's Road as an Epic-legal map greatly limits the types of warbands that can be successful in Epic.

What days do you guys play at Pandemonium. Is there a schedule or something I could look at? [:)]

Pandemonium is currently running tourneys the 2nd and 4th Wednesday's of the month. If the month has 5 Wednesdays, like May, there is another tournament on the 5th Wednesday.

Next week, May 31, there is a 200 pt constructed tourney there.

We have asked Scott to start them around 6:00pm but they always start late due to people showing up after work. They are usually under way by 6:30-6:45 or so.

I have not seen too much information posted anywhere about the tournaments.

My last post said that the tournament tonight was a 200 pt constructed at Pandemonium. This is based on an email that I received from Scott Withington when I inquired as to what the format was for tonight.

I just looked on the DCI website and saw that it has been registered for a 500 pt tournament. To be safe I would suggest either calling there ahead of time or bring two warbands, one 200 pt and one 500 pt. I have seen people show up at tournaments before with the wrong warband that is no fun. I apologize ahead of time if this happens tonight, but I was just going by the information I had.

Sorry for any inconvenience,

Terry

If that's the case (Epic tournament or nothing), I'd rather bag it and practice for Pittsburgh...

You should come out Herb. If everyone brings a 200 pt band hopefully we can play that for the tournament. As it stands now I think everyone is expecting to play a 200 pt tourney anyways. If worse comes to worse, I won't play in the 500 pt tourney and we can play three 200 pt games!

Anyways, I will not get a chance to see your answer, so if you show, great. I will bring a couple different 200 pt warbands just in case you show. If not, I will send you an email about going to Pittsburgh on Saturday.

All's well. The tournament was 200 point, and for once I did OK (2-1, in a three-way tie for second).

I'm beginning to think that come Saturday, folks are going to be talking about another new Qualifier-worthy band...

...it won't be mine, but I've seen it and played against it, and don't see what sort of band could beat it (other than luck 'o the dice).
