Here is the little minutiae that I could add from where I was sitting...forgive me for not knowing last names or remembering exactly what happened in each game...

My warband: Urthok, Duergar Champ X2, Zak Rak X2, Snig (3 Skirms) Timber Wolf, Miner - Hellspike map.

Round 1

I played Steve who ran Urthok, Snig Worgrider (2 blackblades), Blood Ghost x2, Skullcrusher Ogre, miner - Teleporter.

Steve won map init and chose his. The game lasted 5 rounds and I was fortunate enough to come out on top. Cleave and the speed of the Zaks helped me get there.

Round 2

I played Pat who ran LSD, Couatl, Artificer, Maa x2, WFScout - ?map.

I won map init and chose Hellspike. This was another 5 round game. The openess of the map allowed me to surround the LSD and reduce the # of targets he could cone. He did manage to paralyze both Zaks, but the LSD was beat down pretty far at that point. Urthok's cmdr 5 and the immune paralysis of the DCs combined with the map were big factors (along with many well timed rolls for me).

Round 3

I was hoping to face Charles who was also 2-0, because i figured this would be my last chance to play him in person. I didn't expect to go very deep without losing. Unfortunately, I drew Boyce instead.

He ran dual Steel Predators with 4 miners - ?map.

He won map init and chose my map. This game also lasted 5 rounds, but I was sorely outplayed. Boyce took advantage of the open board to get off both cones and tore my band to shreds. He really played a great game.

Round 4

I played Kyle, who ran Beholder, Gauth, Dark Naga, Large duergar X2, ????miners - Dungeon of Blood.

Kyle won map init and chose his. This was a 7 round game and came down to my DC vs his Beholder. I was lucky enough to win init and hit the Beholder causing a morale check. He failed the check and was not able to rally without a cmdr. This was the wackiest game I've played as far back as I can remember. Had he not failed the save, he would have won and I would have been out for sure.

Round 5

My 2nd loss was to Dan. He ran Couatl, Marut, Ballista, Aramil, Cleric of Yondalla, 2x MAA, Commoner - Outpost.

He won map init and we played on Outpost. Dan played a really smart game. He used the Marut to block my passage to the Ballista and ended up pounding away at my band. He made no mistakes and gave me no shot to compete. He really dominated.

Round 6

The last round I drew Hope. She ran Couatl, AoK, Gith Monk, Purple Dragon Knight, Timber Wolf, ??? - ? map.

I won map init and we played on Hellspike. The open map helped me swarm Kord and then the PDK.

I ended up finishing 4-2 and lucked out qualifying over others who also went 4-2. I lucked out even more when I faced 2 bands with multiple Sacred Watchers (Charles played 3 and Jared played 5). The unlimited Chill Touch spells with the Zaks really helped me win both games.

In the first round, Charles played Couatl, Marut, 3x Sacred Watcher, Aramil, Mialee and Std Bearer - Outpost.

Charles won map init and chose Outpost. He played a great game causing several morale checks on my hitters. I was fortunate enough to make them, while he failed with the Watchers. That left too many rounds of beating on the Marut with no support for anyone to overcome.

Jared played a Sword Archon, 5 Sacred Watchers, Artificer and Mialee - Outpost.

I won map init and we played on Hellspike. The open map again helped me to take down the titan by swarm. The Sacred Watchers mostly failed morale checks at that point without a cmdr to help on the saves.

It was fun to be on the receiving end of good fortune. There were a lot of great players there and I learned a lot from them. Sorry if I didn't give all the best details, hopefully Charles can give a better report.

Congrats Charles! You're the Champ to me!

John, thanks for the kind words and help! I'd also like to thank my friends in Team Amish, particularly Mark (Lord_Raven) and honorary member Stephen (AesophDarkfable) in helping me prepare. Thanks also need to go to Jesse (Doubt), Phrank, Dagni and Chad for their feedback and help. If I missed someone, I apologize as I got home at 3 am, had about 3 hours sleep before my baby girl Campbell needed attention, etc.

When preparation for the Qualifier season begin I was leaning towards a Couatl-Arcane Ballista with either Marut or AoK. That thought was dashed when I was on vacation in Orlando and had the chance to meet up with Jesse for some practice. His Marut-Couatl-SWs clobbered me 3 times in a row and I decided I needed to go in another direction.

I became enamored with the Marut-Couatl-SW x 2-CoO build after seeing Jesse play it and seeing how well Phrank did with it in Toronto (IIRC). However, as NJ approached, I delved into the success Dagni, AesophDarkfable and Chad all had using the 3 SW version and finally decided to go that way.

It served me well enough and I can't complain. As others have mentioned, matchups have a large impact on one's success. My victories were in games I felt like I had a warband advantage and my losses were in games I felt like I was at a disadvantage.

Well on to the games . . ..
GAME 1
My first game was against Marko Miladinovich. A very nice guy who made the event a family affair as he brought his daughters and son! He and his daughter finished 9,10 out of 23--not bad at all.

Marko brought Ryld, Frenzied Berserker, Longstrider, Wand Expert, Crow Shaman, and King's Road. He was short on activations and his Wand Expert would be a non-factor, for the most part, as my Marut had blindsight and my Couatl could nerf the wands. Marko was also unaware of how incorporeal worked or that my Marut and Sacred Watchers were immune to crits--something that he unfortunately learned the hard way.

Not surprising, he won map init (CR 8 vs CR 0) so we played on King's Road. He also won side and took side B. The battle took place in and around the shared 4 square victory area. Neither of us got victory points the first round as he cast he spells and I was too slow to reach it. In the second round, his Longstrider and one of my SW sat on the VA and we took attacks on each other.

He killed a SW but I killed off his FB. In the fourth round, I killed of Ryld, forced a MC on his Longstrider, who failed and ran off and at that time he conceeded.

1-0

GAME 2

My second game was against Daniel McManus. Little did I'd know that I'd see him again in the Finals! Daniel was playing a warband similar to what I had started with: Marut, Couatl, Arcane Ballista, Cleric of Yondalla, Aramil, MAA x 2, Human Commoner, Drow Outpost.

We both had the same map. IIRC, he won initiative and chose the Outpost side which was fine with me as I wanted the Cave side. I was pretty confident in this game as I had used a similar warband and knew that my SWs would cause him a lot of problems.

The first two rounds were mostly posturing as my SWs took the bridge and earned victory points as his Ballista fired at them but with little success. He overextended his Marut (usually my problem) as his Couatl was stuck back with his Ballista. I was able to take the opportunity to get my Marut across the bridge and using Snake Swiftness, hit his Marut for 30.

Round three resulted in the loss of his Marut as I used the Couatl to Sonic Orb it for 15 more and then finished up with the Marut for another 30. My Marut was then able to advance on his Ballista and Couatl, both of which I surrounded with SW so he couldn't get a shot off on my Marut. He also lots 2 of his fodder. I continued to get victory points and he did this round as well, also killing a SW.

In round 4, I based his Couatl, took out Aramil and he conceeded.

2-0

GAME 3

My third game was against Nick Fowler, a younger player who was using a HGB, Ryld, Fiendish Girallion, Cultist of the Dragon and Field of Ruin. Another game where I felt I had a large warband advantage. It didn't help him that he lost map init, even with Ryld so we played on Drow Outpost. IIRC, he also lost sides but in any case, I started on the Cave side.

He spent the first two rounds summoning Abyssal Maws with the Cultist. We both took the bridge in the first round and both earned victory points for the first two rounds. The problem for him was that the combination of my SWs holding the bridge, Marut hitting over them with his own attack and Snake Swiftness was too much for his HGB and it died in round 3, but not before the HGB took out my 2 SWs block the bridge.

We had some exchanges in round 4 but round 5 determined the game as I destroyed Ryld and his routing Girallion was unable to rally. I exceeded 200 points.

3-0

GAME 4

Going into this game, I'm feeling pretty good, knowing that I'm quickly approaching the number of wins I need to Qualify. However, this game against Matthew Barry was intense as it was a mirror match.
IIRC, Chad convinced him to use the Marut-Couatl-SW x 3 warband. We both had Drow Outpost but I got the Cave side. I can't recall if I won side init or whether he chose the other side.

We both took the bridge with SWs in the first round. I decided that the key for me to win was to win the battle of the support figures and try to claim the bridge for myself. I was successful in the endeavor but Matthew had some horrible rolls with incorp that certainly helped my cause.

Using my SWs to base and/or attack his support pieces, I was able to take out Aramil and Mialee in round 2 and Standard Bearer in round 3. Over rounds 2 and 3, I was also able to get rid of two of his SWs with the Marut due to successful incorp rolls, regaining the bridge.

So at the end of round 3, I had 30 VPs to his 20 and had killed Aramil, Mialee, Standard Bearer and 2 SWs. The game had swung my way.

Matthew fought back, taking out a SW in round 4 and 5 while I contined to gain VPs and took out his last SW in round 5. Rounds 6 and 7, he gains more points by taking my last SW, Mialle and Aramil but I'm able to get a leg up on the Marut on Marut match-up. In round 8, his Marut goes down and that's game.

Whew . . . intense.

4-0

GAME 5

I'm the only undefeated person going into this game and get matched up against Jared Bruno (Harmonizer). Jared has the first warband that I face where I feel I have a severe disadvantage. He's playing Sword Archon, SW x 5, Dwarf Artificer, Mialee and Outpost.

He wins side so I ended up playing on the Outpost side. We are both able to gain VPs the first 4 rounds. The problem for me are multiple--like in multiple SWs that do 15 damage in range of SA to my 10. He's also not missing much or failing saves.

I used the Couatl in rounds 1 and 2 to try to ground all his fliers with LUG. My success if limited. I fail both SR rolls against the Sword Archon and am only able to ground 1 SW the first time and 1 SW the second time--2 out of 5 is not the odds I was hoping for! Not likely to have mattered but . . ..

During the first 4 rounds, I am only able to kill Mialee and 2 SWs while he kills a SW and then MC checks my Couatl in round 4, who fails and flies off. I had opened up for his Sword Archon to base my Couatl. An error in judgement, I'm sure, but I wanted his Archon near my Marut since I had no chance to chase him down. His SWs were hitting mine at will and I felt that my only hope was to take out the big guy and get rid of his CE and his big damage!

It was risk and as many who know or play me can attest, I often take too many risks! Ah well . . . I had his Sword Archon down to 10 hps but was unable to win init and his Sword Archon killed my Marut. So without my Marut or Couatl, I conceeded.

Jared played it well so my hat off to him. I just hope I had him nervous about that init roll where either the SA or Marut was likely to fall.

4-1

GAME 6

Okay, now I'm nervous. I lose my first game and if I lose the last one before Top 4, I feel like I may not make the cut after going 4-0. To make matters worse, I get paired against Boyce Durr and his dual Steel Predators. He has Steel Predator x 2, Kobold Miner x 4, Broken Demongate.

Now matter how you slice it, 40 potential sonic damage twice is a scary thought. To make matters worse, Steel Predators are immune to sonic damage, nerfing 10 of my Marut's damage or my Couatl's Sonic Orbs.

He wins map init and take Broken Demongate. I win side and take side B thinking it's better to defend.

I think the key to this game for me was remaining in the fight all the way through and gaining VPs every round. We ended up playing 10 rounds and gain 90 points over the first 9 rounds were huge.

Boyce was only able to get VPs in 5 of the 10 rounds. He got them the first 3 rounds but I slowly got rid of his miners with my SWs, Mialee, etc.

He took the early lead when his Miner critted my Aramil in round 2 and ran off. Ouch, that hurt bad as I was looking to nerf his Predators.

At the end of round 2, my Marut is in the main corridor, about 6 squares away from the middle (gate). I have the Standard Bearer close by as well as a SW actually in the gate area. I figure that I can't have my Couatl get hit by both sonic attacks so I use the SB and his Relay Commands.

Boyce takes the bait and one of his Steel Predators moves up, sonic cones me, and then moves into the side corridor near the words Broken Demongate.

My Marut fails but takes 30 due to the relayed CE. Boyce had been aware of that ability so it worked, except that I failed the save, darn it. The SB dies but his misses the incorp on my SW.

He brings his other Steel Predator close to the gate but just out of my 6 move plus reach. A plan comes together--need to try and force MC on the Steel Predator before he can use his cone. I use my SW to block his other Steel Predator in the corridor so he can't double team my Marut and will have to go the long way to join the battle.

I move my Marut up 7 so I can reach the Steel Predator and then use my Couatl to Snake Swift. I hit and bring him down 20. If I win init, I have a chance to get him down 40 more.

I do win init and I succeed in both attacks! Unfortunately, he makes his MC and I figure that's game. I needed one of the Predators to run.

He cones my Marut but I save and only take 10. However, IIRC, my Couatl fails the save, takes 30 and then fails MC but stays on the board. Through the use of my SWs (many on AOOs, he takes), I whittle down his injured Predator. Then with a crit from a Sacred Watcher, I finish him off in round 6 and suddenly the game takes another flavor--I can win! My Couatl has also rallied!

His other Steel Predator has only taken 5 damage but its chasing my Couatl. I use Mialee to block the Steel Predator, stopping him from basing me for another round. He's running out of time as I'm collecting VPs and fast approaching 200. He knows he needs to kill the wounded Marut but I've protected him using SWs in the Victory B area near the Broken Demongate words so he's left chasing the Couatl.

We finish round 10 and we both know that I'll collect 10 in round 11. He can't do anything as I win init and run the Couatl away. Game over and I qualify!

5-1

FINALS

GAME 1

My top ranking after 6 rounds paired me with my buddy John Zink who had the best tiebreakers of the 4-2 players. My previous victory against Boyce Durr may have been the deciding factor as he just missed the cut.

In any case, facing John was no reward! His dual Zakya Rakshasas meant my SWs wouldn't last long and he had a huge activation advantage from the start, 11 to 8.

I knew I was facing an uphill battle but felt if I could get some luck and have some of his figures rout . . . I might have a chance. Well, luck failed me in this game [)] resulting in a quick game.

IIRC, I started off lucky winning my map and my side (Cave). We met at the bridge but he did send a Zak Rak, his Goblin Skirmishers and Timber Wolf around my flank. His CR 5 to CR 0 was big in our game, especially combined with his activation advantage, forcing me to move all my figures before most of his big hitters.

The advantage quickly got worse as his Zak Raks chill touched two of my SWs. One made a morale check but failed the second time around so I quickly lost two. The third was just killed from several swings from a DC, the final swing due to an AOO caused by a chill touch.

So basically I had my Marut and my Couatl against his hoard. I was able to MC two DCs and 1 Zak Rak but all made their saves and my dim hope of victory faded. The Marut rolled a 1 to kill one of the DCs so that hurt too. I ended up killing it the following round but the combined attacks of 1 DC and 2 Zak Raks quickly took down my Marut. I tried to fight on with my Couatl but IIRC, he force a MC and the Couatl failed so I conceeded. Great job John!

John was hoping to face Jared and his SWarm for obvious reasons. Also, I believe that he prevously lost to Daniel and his Arcane Ballista. John got his wish and while I didn't see the game as I was playing my own, his Zak Raks were the key for another comfortable victory for John and his deserving first place!

GAME 2

Meanwhile, Daniel and I revisited our previous game. Both of us really didn't care that much on 3rd or 4th place so we probably weren't as careful as we should have been.

He tried the Cave side of the Outpost this time but again I was able to keep him off the VP areas until round 4. I dominated the first 4 rounds as I picked off a 3 point fodder and got VPs each round. I also destroyed his Ballista in round 4 and took down his Aramil in round 5.

I then started to beat on his Marut. However, IIRC, I rolled two 1s! One on the Marut's attack and right after it on Snake Swiftness. Daniel won initiative and was able to take out my Marut before I could take out his and the tide changed. I kept fighting on with my Couatl and SWs.

Finally in round 9, I took down his Couatl, allowing me to Sonic Orb his Marut in round 10, sealing the victory.

So I go 6-2, take 3rd place and have a spot in the Championships at GenCon! My friend John takes 1st place. What a day!

All the players I met or had the chance to play were classy and it was a super environment for family as well. Kudos to Jester's Playhouse and its owner, Richard Gain! We were served hamburgers and hotdogs off the grill and the tournament was run like clock work--the first game starting about 10 minutes after the 2 pm start time!

Randolph, NJ

Thanks from me as well to Jester's, this was my first event with more than 5 people and I doubled my match experience. I have yet to develop the mach memory you guys have, but in respect of us bottom feeders I will quicikly relay my matches:
I ran: AoMoradin (anti giant and HGB), Loyal Earth Elmental (2nd best LG damage peice I have, plus burrow), Dwarf Artificier( for the MW and that AC plus possible rust on a Marut/HH/IG), SW, GDS, WFScout (VP's), HDW, Wolf 200/8 - In 6 matches I only once got to use the stone lord effect.
I felt OK agains the Marut/COatls's I read about, OK against any quad CE with ogres or giants, OK against HH, or even chraals since I had faced them. AB and Kord woudl be possible trouble.

I wanted to win one match and meet one person from northern NJ! I accomplished both. I told Chad Dragonlord that I would post if I went 0.500, so here I am.

1 - Joe - Double Kord - I feared the two Kords teaming up on my AoM and he feared my AoM going after a Kord, so we swapped out other pieces, I got more VP and won by a nose. If he was more aggressive, between the range of Kord and the Grant move, he should have been able to base and flank me with the Kords.
1-0

2- Boyce - Double Predators, I obliged by slowly picking off his miners and we cat and moused with my LEE and his preds, I wanted to avoid the cones catching more than 1 or 2 pices. In the end, I made what I thought wa a smart move that turned out to (posssibly) be not so smart. First, I sent the LEE and the AoM after separate preds, that was a mistake. Second, I pulled up one space away on each, figuring my reach 2 would give me full attacks, but he would have to move (and couldnt pounce). Problem was that meant he could run (and can those things run) without the Aoo. In the end, I was one hit away from MC on both of them, a hammer toss missed, so no MC. If it hit, he had to save, if he failed, he was off. But very well played!
1-1

3- Dan - Marut, Coatl, Arcane Ballistae. Here is perfect example (akin to Amage on Forest) of the perfect map for a warband. And in all my matches the only time I have ever had that Deer in headlights feeling. Each time I put a fodder piece in the way to try and start across the bridge to base the AB, he took one shot to kill it and the next to hit my hitters. He killedd the LEE before it could even try to rally! I scored a moral victory be geting to cast Rust on the MArut and get in a couple atacks with AoM, but the AB just kept plunking away...That was a wipeout!
1-2

4 - Heather, Kord, HEBI, Brass Samurai. Here's on ethat got away. I was still burning from being timid agaisnt the Steel PReds, so I went healong into this one and Kord hit my Aoo, plus a fireball and fire breath and of coure a 2 on the MC for AoM, gmae over. I shoudl have gone around and attacked her suport pieces.
1-3

Time to call home! Kids ok? are you SURE you dont need me home? OK. I will keep playing, see you later. Seriously I was staying to the end, didnt want to be included on that "people who leave tournaments" thread.

Finally, I get a warband I feel good against.

Name escapes me, quad CE beater - two Girallon/s, ogre war hulk, ogre ravage. Got my map - Mushroom, but didnt seal vistory areas off this time (soemthing different). He marched on in and I won initi and teed off on everything, he failed MC on one FG and the OWH, then I worked over the OR and the other FG. Even a SW and the Scout forced MC on his EoG. THE FG and OWH both rallied, but got to the fray in time to take the place of their fallen comrades, I got to win by wipeout for a change.
2-3

Last match was against a young player Toby - He won map and chose Teleport, band only had 4 pices, OWH, HGB, WDrummer and Druid. He came right after me, I got a few steps out of my stargting box, but he couldnt hit me and I couldnt miss him.
3-3

So I went 3 for 6, 11 ou of 21, raising me to 6-6 lifetime, met several enjoyable players from all over (PA, NJ, NY, CT, MD). Wish I could find some more people around me to play, or get Vassal running on my PC - Joe says he can help.

Hope to be back in Doylestown for next monthly tourney there.

Congrats John. I can't feel too bad about 5th place, since I did manage to win one against you prior to the finals.

Congrats Charles. After our tough match you deserved a top spot.

Thanks for making the tournament so much fun.

I am looking forward to retiring my Preds and trying something new.

Congrats John, Charles and of course Jared who wasn't even planning on coming until I dragged him along. ;)

I'll be posting my report hopefully tomorrow. I'm still beat but extremely stress free all of a sudden. Ha! Jared and I got back to northern NJ at 2:30AM after stopping to eat. Then I got up in the morning and drove the 5+ hours to finally get home. Phew!

It was great to meet some MaxMinis/Vassal people. Thanks for editing your post Charles to include my username...what goods a custom shirt with my username on it if it doesn't get posted the next day on MaxMinis. [)]

I had a great time and a near perfect day (not as in 8-0 but as in how things played out...you'll have to wait for my posts for the explaination).

Ack it was a great pleasure to meet you and was disappointed I didn't get a chance to play you.

tundrin welcome to the boards and thanks for the match!

Thank you Dan, Boyce and...well Lord_Raven since I don't know your name yet. These guys that were there were a class act. And Dan kicked my can.

Dan, I'd like to try a rematch on vassal some time and see if I learned anything. If you see me on and want to play, let me know.

Oh, and yes, let's talk about the Amish. Any team that has Charles on it is a team I want to join.

A severe disadvantage against this band? I don't see that at all. In fact, after playing against that basic build twice myself, I'd look at it as a slight edge, and the fact that it's guaranteed to be on Outpost as another mark in your favor. Until and unless the opponent kills the Standardbearer, he only does 10 damage with his Watchers, and most of them only do 5 against the Marut, or 10 if the SA is around and the SB is not. Likewise, the Marut is so strong against Sacred Watchers, both offensively and defensively.

Finally, if you don't mind my asking, what exactly was the situation when you conceded? I'm a big fan of not conceding until, well, you've lost, and he couldn't have had more than three SWs left, along with the Sword Archon with only 10 hp left. If you still had 2 SWs left, I just wonder if you were a couple lucky rolls from killing his Sword Archon and having a near even endgame, 2 SWs vs 3. On the other hand, if some of your fodder was dead, and/or his victory points were high enough, I'm sure it's possible that you literally couldn't win before he won on tile points.

Dagni,

When I conceded, I was down the Marut, Couatl and 1 SW. IIRC, his Sword Archon was basing my Standard Bearer and a SW. He was down 2 SWs and Mialee. One of his SW had +2 MW and one had +1 MW--one of them had been flanking my Marut and I believe the other was still moving towards the action as I had grounded it with LUG.

So I was left with 2 SWs, Standard Bearer, Aramil and Mialee against his 10 hp Sword Archon, 3 SWs (uninjured I believe) and Dwarf Artificer. 1 of my SWs was on the bridge, with something like 5 hps left.

In hindsight, you are correct--I had a slugger's chance. If my SW crits the Sword Archon, then I do 15 after DR and kill him. Or if my SW survives for 2 rounds and I get in 2 hits, again the SA goes down. And then its which SWs go down first. Thanks for reminding me to never give up until it's literally over!

I know Chad would be more than happy to do it also. He has posted on here before offering lessons. I'm not really good at getting you started, but once you're on I can tutor you on how to use it. Just look for Ruhk or Ruhk69.

@Lord Raven - eh hem!! I thought I was a member of Team Amish? You do remember offering me a slot?

I won the Mass qualifier, so team amish has done quite well so far.

I am also a member of Team GameRocket.net so you'll have to forgive me and my dual allegiance.

@CSchroder

I have to agree with Dagni. When I read that you thought you had a disadvantage against the SWarm band, I was thinking the same thing as he. I'd take my chances against that band with your band anyday. The opponent has no Couatl and you have a SB and Aramil for nerfing too.

Plus, I have found opponents concede against me way too soon on a number of occasions. Unless I need a bathroom break or a food break I see no reason not to keep on plugging away until the bitter end. There have been matches that I thought were over one way or the other that made a complete reversal by the time 200pts were scored. You just never know what the dice or your opponent will give you.

Sure, no problem!

I mean, I usually will fight on until it's over even if it's literally impossible to win unless my opponent makes a mistake. However, I understand that other people will concede a game that's truly over. Still, you described that game so well, that yes, I was left with the thought that you might be a couple of perfect breaks from a near 50/50 to win the game again.

It's such a small deal, really, though. It's more of a missed opportunity than a mistake. Then too, that's actually one of the reasons I like to put off conceding. You'll always remember the one game you climbed out of an impossible hole to win the game. Amazing comebacks make for amazing stories, and amazing memories.

on a related note, if your opponent offers to conceed to you TAKE IT!

report the win. just get up and accept the victory. Otherwise, if you "play it out just to have something to do" like I did twice (not on saturday, in the past) and end up losing cause you arent focused.......

Im staring down the barrel of being back near 1600 again.. and its not attractive.
