I know you guys all know how this works, i am not
concerned with my own ranking because it is absolutely
pathetic, but i am curious how the DCI scores get
computed? how does K factors get acounted? etc.
what number do you start at, how do losses and wins
affect that number?

Thanks in advance, maybe some day it will matter to
me, because i am more competitive, but it is just
interest at this point.

You start at 1600, I believe. You can read about the forumla in the DCI universal tournament rules, in Appendix A.

The normal K-value for a tournament is 16K. For the qualifiers it is 32K.

What that means is how many points are at stake. In the very last game of a tournament, if a player wins he will end up with exactly K-value points more than if he lost that same game. That means that the amount any person's DCI will change for a given game is doubled in a 32K tournament.

For a 16K tournament, the higher rated person will receive this many points if he wins:

Points he gains, DCI point differential between him and his lower rated opponent

+8 - 0
+7 - 44
+6 - 89
+5 - 137
+4 - 191
+3 - 255
+2 - 338
+1 - 470

If the lower rated player wins, he gains 16 points minus the value the higher player would've gotten had he won from the table above. In other words, the same table, but the lower rated player gets 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, or 15 points. Again, for a qualifier, just double the number of points at stake.

This is all very helpful to know. But what is the formula for points lost when you lose? I assume it's something similar but I'd appreciate any help.

You lose exactly the amount the opponent gains.

For example, if you're at the third breakpoint on the table listed, and your DCI rating is 137 points higher than your opponent, then you would win 5 points if you win, your opponent would gain 11 points if he won; you would lose 11 if you lost, your opponent would lose 5 if he lost. At this year's qualifiers, those numbers would be doubled, since it's a 32 K-value, rather than the normal 16.

If you want to calculate it the old fashioned way, use this, from the DCI TO handbook:

Win Probability = 1 / 10^((Opponent’s Rating–Player’s Rating)/400) + 1

Then,

Player’s New Rating = Player’s Old Rating + (K-Value * (Scoring Points–Player’s Win Probability))

Where:
K-Value is as Dagni described, and Scoring Points always equals 1 for DDM.

So a two people ranked at 2000 pts points playing, winner would get 8 pts, while if two people at 1600 pts played, the winner would also get 8 pts? I always sorta figured the more points the players had the more points would be up for grabs.

It is, when the players aren't equal. When players ranks are equal, the points are the same no matter what the rank happens to be.

1600 vs 1600 = up 8 and down 8
1700 vs 1700 = same as above
1800 vs 1600 = 5 won/lost if higher player wins, 11 won/lost if lower player wins.

According to WotC site, the qualifers were 24K. (I'd check the relevant page, but Wizard's is down right now.) I think I remember the Championships being 32K though.

The web site is in error. The qualifiers have definitely been processed as 32K. I have confirmed this with DCI. Now, DCI could always retroactively recalculate the qualifiers as 24K, but we have no indication that they plan to do this.

WHAT! You mean I can't trust the website?! But they never make errors. [)]
