| OK, first off to all the players that were there, i had a great time. Even though things just didnt go my way at all yesterday.
I played... death slaad x2 MDP x2 trog thug wardrummer TW x2
I went 2-4 with one of them being a bye. Just couldnt get my dice to roll and where near good yesterday. I think i played pretty well, made a few minor mistakes, nothing really game breaking however. Just a matter of playing really good players and not having the dice there to make any kind of difference for my self. Just as an example, last match i played i had 6 attacks on Aspect of Kord to do 20 damage and force a commanderless morale check. My attacks were +15/+10/+13/+8/+13/+8 to hit a 21 AC, needless to say i didnt force a morale and lost th two death slaads that were left.
But i dont feel bad, i had a great time, played a log of good players and got to meet and talk to a few maxmini's players. Sorry if i didnt talk to more of you. I was kind of unsociable yesterday, 3 hours sleep the night before and a 3 1/2 hour drive makes me kind of cranky...
But i met and talked to CcolinH, really nice guy. Never got to play him though ;(
Watched PagasusKnight play a full match while i had my bye and talked to him a little bit as well.
Saw all the stillwater people, fun to see them again since we dont make it up there but once every few months. Was nice to see Lance and Jared actually play some games instead of running them and judging them all the time, hope they enjoyed playing...
But unfortunately there were some negative things about the whole thing. Jason (GoodisBAD) played someone, dont remembe rthe name or even if he was a maxmini's poster. But Jason playing 3x DC, 2x Zakya, hobgob sgt and some other things. Well he ended up killing the other players Iron Golem on the second round. The player got pissed off, just packed up his stuff in the middle of the game and walked out. He was a real ass towards Jason during all this and it kind of sucks that someone had to be that way during a fun event where people are trying to enjoy themselves.
The turn out i thought was kind of poor as well. There were 24 total people there. Normally our games in OKC bring 8-10 people, i know the still water guys average at least that as well if not more. When they had there convention, distracticon we had 20 people there just for that and it was a blast. Just was kind of a let down to only have 24 players show for it. Although all the players that did show were great guys and everyone had a lot of fun.
The other thing, and may get flamed for this but thats OK. I talked to several people from OKC and stillwater, and this may just be us being biased because were loyal to our own FLGS, but no one was too happy about the store. Heard several comments about the staff, being unsociable, rude at times and several other things. I cant say if all these comments were true and im not saying this personally about the store, jsut what others said to me. Personally i think they could have been a little bit more sociable, i know me and the 2 others that were there with me were kind of put off by it all. Besides the person announcing the matchup there was no annoucnement of who was a judge at the event, no one was ever walking around watching or "judging" games and it was all kind of straight business, come in give me money and play your game and that was it.
There were also a couple things that people wanted me to post about as well. One person was really upset because some of the promotional materials included in retailer kits were on the shelves with price tags on them. I understand stores have to pay for them to get them, but i thought the whole point of them was to bring in more players with some free swag.
second thing that someone wanted posted was about the prize support. The wizards supplied prizes for top 4 were same as everywhere else. The store also gave out a bunch of promo's and repaints, which was really cool, i got a swarm of spiders repaint which i didnt have yet so i was really happy with that. Everyone who played got a repaint or promo or something. So that was a nice addition. But we had one person there that was really kind of peeved about the booster prizes. No wi understand a store has to make money and all, i am not saying anything against that. Im posting for someone who diesnt post on maxmini's because they wanted to see what people though about it.
The booster support was 2 cases. Which ordering online or even from my FLGS is 200 bucks. Dont know what stores get them for from wotc or wholesalers but im pretty sure it is less then what i pay. His problem with it was the store made $360 off of the entrance fee's and only gave out 2 cases. This is not to mention whatever else was bought by the 24 players that were there. Now to each his own and im not going to get into a long debate about what the store should or should not do or what they should give away as prizes. But my friend was a bit pissed and wanted something said. Not going to say who it was or where he placed or if he did or did not get any boosters. Ha snothing to do with his opinion of it, but that is also exactly what it is, just his opinion, and every one has one, not always good but there always is one.
But to sum everything up, i had 3 hours sleep friday night, drove a total of about 8 hours to get there and back, played 5 games, was at the store for about 8 hours, had good times and bad times, saw good players and more good players, AND HAD A GREAT TIME!!!!
I would definitely do it again, although im hoping OK steals the TX qualifier next year, think we can get a bigger turnout in OKC and think it would be a lot of fun. Either way ill be at the next qualifier no matter where it is at.
Once again, HAD A GREAT TIME, MET A LOT OF GREAT PEOPLE AND DONT REGRET IT AT ALL.
And i also learned a lot as well, like the fact i need to bring 20 different dice since all the ones i brought sucked arse, hehe. | | Ha:19 of 80! De:43 of 60! Ar:24 of 60! GoL:60 of 72! Ab:59 of 60! | Daunte,
Great to see you guys again!
I ended up going 3-3 with the Rakshasa and 3 Helmed Horrors. I placed 10th in a field of 24. I couldn't ask for more in my first qualifier. I had anticipated a drumming by the Couatl/Marut, and I duly received one! I also learned something in my loss to PegasusKnight (sp?) ane his crazy white-painted band. I actually went into this match thinking I would walk all over this group, but that of course was my undoing. Thanks for the game, PK! (Although I'm not sure about rolling in that box.) Certainly the most entertaining match of the day was against Robby's mirror band.
As for the store and the judges . . . well, my only complaint is that the judge was never a presence in the room. I was never aware of who the judge actually was. The game-store owner? I think the judge should always be handy, and for an event of this size, there should certainly be more than one.
All in all, I had a highly enjoyable experience, and I think the Oklahoma players (12 of 24!) provided a strong showing.
Cheers,

| So YOU were the "double Mounted Patrol guy!" You were spoken of with great annoyance on the trip back to Austin. And you should take that as a compliment!
Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet you, Daunte!

| Daunte - I was the Helmed Horror band you played in the second round. I loved your band and how you piloted the Drow Mounted Patrols. Gave me some serious fits there for awhile. We talked about different possibilities for your band on the way home quite a bit. [:)]
I didn't find the store at all off-putting, I found them quite nice, actually, but I did notice the lack of any "official" presence around during the matches. I went and asked at the beginning of the tournament who the judge was, just in case it was necessary (and it never was in any of my matches - I think we had one rules lookup the whole tournament in all my matches), and it was the guy who was doing announcing the pairings.
I was also tracking time, and I'm quite sure that a few rounds extended past their hour time limit - there certainly wasn't a call of "1/2 hour left", "10 minutes", "5 minutes" like I am used to at our tournaments, but that might just be a local thing.
I get the feeling they're a little new at running large tournaments, though, so hopefully the store learned as much about doing it as I learned from the games I played, and we'll both do a little better next time. [:)]

| Glad my band at least gave people something to talk about. The only thing i regret was not talking and meeting more people from maxmini's. And that was my fault totally, need more sleep next time but my two year old didnt think that was necessary.
And i liked my band, my dice just didnt like me most games, hehe.
And if you can find a good way to increase the + to attack for those mounted drow make sure to let me know, hehe. | | Ha:19 of 80! De:43 of 60! Ar:24 of 60! GoL:60 of 72! Ab:59 of 60! Dk:58 of 60! | I was one of the people from Austin. I didn't get a chance to play you, but I think 2x death slaad + 2x mounted drow patrol has a lot of potential. I need to get another mounted drow patrol just to try it out.

| | It was definitely fun to play. The low attack bonus on the MDP is what really hurts the band though. | | Ha:19 of 80! De:43 of 60! Ar:24 of 60! GoL:60 of 72! Ab:59 of 60! Dk:58 of 60! | Daunte, glad you had a good time in spite of the complications of little sleep, unlucky rolls, and an unimpressive FLGS... I'm one of your two victories (I'm the guy who was running the mounted paladin/ village priest band) and I regret not asking you about maxminis when I introduced myself at the beginning of our game. I appreciate the patience you showed me when we played (the qualifier was the first time I've actually played) and hopefully I'll see you again at the DQ prerelease if you don't have one in OK.
On the turn out issue... this weekend was also the weekend for the biggest anime convention of the year (in Texas at least) AKON (or maybe it's called A-Con, whatever...) and that might have cut into some of the turnout as I know a few people who would have come and played if they hadn't been double booked. | | Champion of Pierce, warforged archer/commando, and all other quality unique minis because how else will Drizzt become tier 1? | |

Wish we had gotten to play - It was nice meeting you too.

I find this difficult to believe. While Mark and Jubei may not the most gregarious of folks I have never known them to be rude or unsociable.

This is probably my fault as I did not inform Mark that he needed to announce that he was the judge for the event. He is new with DDM and so am I really so I dropped that ball, not him. Mark did a fine job judging and there really weren't that many problems for him to deal with. He borrowed my FAQ exactly twice. There may have been problems I did not hear about though, I do not know.

Its quite possible they did/do not know this is a not looked well upon or also possible that they do not know that the materials are promotional. They have not been doing DDM for very long and someone may have sold them those pieces.

I personally don't have a problem with the way the prizes were done that day.
You seemed like a pretty nice guy Daunte maybe your friend should step up and voice his own concerns, however.
We are having a prerelease tourney here and I will talk with Mark about some of this stuff. I will definitely make sure that there is more of a judging presence and I'll see what he has to say about the promotional items for sale. | | Champion of the ???
