Sirohk’s Syracuse Qualifier Report:

First, a big thanks to XenoZephyr for judging, well done my friend.

Second, I have to say this again as I have said in my previous reports – I had a great time and met more of the cool Maxmin’s folks:

Jim (Arnminster)
Terry Chauvin
Tom (The Hev)
Chad (Latervalus)
Erik (Krystian)
Thomas Hamilton (DeadEnd106) (one of the Watertown players)
The Syracuse players
The Watertown Players who made it to the event – I was glad to meet you guys and I hope you can make next weekends WotDQ pre-release
And anyone else I may have missed

It was a pleasure meeting everyone and I hope to see all of you again either at GenCon or at future events. [)]

Also, a BIG congratulations to Terry, Jim, Tom R., and Chad for qualifying! Boo ya, way to go guys! I hope to see all of you at GenCon and some of you next week at the pre-release. ΖD]

Third, although it was a low turn out, a big thanks to “How You Play the Game” for hosting and running such a top notch Qualifier event. You could not ask for a better place to hold a Qualifier.

Fourth, here’s my $0.02 on the low turn out:

1) It was the last of the season, and those that needed to qualify are qualified or are going to do the grinder.
2) Many of the “regulars” (Syracuse and Albany players) had schedules that did not permit them to make the Qualifier
3) Likewise, many of the “regulars” (Syracuse and Albany players) I gather preferred to play next weekend at the WotDQ pre-release
4) The WotDQ pre-release (see above)

LORD RAVEN – you should have come to this qualifier, your “LADYS” would have done you proud at this one!

One benefit of the low turn out was that we got done early and 5 of us (me, Dan, Tom R, Terry, and Jim) went to dinner together and were able to spend some time chatting and such and getting to know each other. Now that was a cool!

One last commentary. IMO the Syracuse area is a great and growing DDM area. Because of its central location it allows a lot of DDM players to come together from Buffalo, Rochester, Albany, and now Watertown and places in Pennsylvania. I believe its close enough to other DDM areas that it really could attract a good sized DDM event. Hopefully next year they can have a qualifier earlier in the season so that it does not conflict with other events and maybe draw folks from Mass., NYC / NJ, and maybe Toronto and or Montreal. It would be great to see a 30+ throng of players from all over NYS and neighboring states and countries there next year!

Finally, my tournament report.

My Warband:

Up until the last minute I was debating between the warband I ended up using (see below) and using x3 Eye of Gruumsh + x2 Orc Wardummers + Tiefling Cpt + Hyena + Timber Wolf (same map). Well, I decided on the one below as I really wanted to try out the Doogie Champs & Green Dragon (I love the speed F12).

So, here’s what I played:

Urthok
x4 Duergar Champion
x1 Green Dragon
x2 Goblin Skirmishers

MAP: Dragon Shrine

FIRST MATCH (vs Tom (The Hev))

Opponents WB –. Mialee, Devis, Medium Astral Construct, Aramil, Inspiring Marshall, Rikka, Frenzied Berserker, Wemic. MAP: Dragon Shrine

Tom and I are rapidly becoming battling regulars. Two weeks ago we faced off in the final of tournament in Rochester. He is becoming a pretty good player and I have thoroughly enjoyed the matches we have had together. We moved and closed in for combat and battled it out for 6 rounds. I came out on top 201-138. Anyways, this one might have been a lot closer or even a loss for me if not for the missed conceal checks – on 3 separate times a 20 was rolled and then the conceal check failed. Phew.

Record 1-0

SECOND MATCH (vs Terry Chauvin)

Opponents WB – Caravan Guard, Warforged Scout, Man-at-arms, Warforged Bodyguard, Aspect of Kord, Cleric of Dol Arrah, Couatl. MAP: Magma Keep

Lost map initiative and played on Magma Keep (yuk). This was a great battle and Terry is a very good player. He really knows how to run the Kord/Couatl.WFB/CoDA warband. Again, a 6 round slugfest but I did manage to get Terry to separate the Couatl and WFB from Kord and CoDA that gave me enough of an opening to I think to tip the match in my favor. A few missed conceal checks on Kord swings, killing Kord in the 5th round, the match ended at 1 hour with me ahead 160-149.

Record 2-0

THIRD MATCH (vs Erik Samhammer (Krystian))

Opponents WB – Elminster, Archmage. MAP: Kings Road.

Won map initiative and played on Dragon Shrine. I was a bit surprised by the warband, but what the heck. Erik’s a good player and I was a little worried about what those two mages could do to my warband. So, round 1 – moved. Round 2 – moved and based Elminster, and attacked, also moved and based Archmage. Round 3 – killed Elminster, AoO on AM as he moves and with a critical cause a MC that AM fails. AM routs right next to exit. Round 4 – one of my DC’s attacks AM, hits, game over.

Record 3-0

FOURTH MATCH (vs Jim Mattaboni (Arnminstor))

Opponents WB – 2x Helmed Horror, Spectre, Duergar Champ, Kobold Sorcerer, Warrrior Skeleton, 2x Timber Wolf. MAP: Keep of Fallen King's

Won map initiative and played on Dragon Shrine (I wanted to nerf the HH’s fire). I lost side choice and got the cold side of things, so to speak. What I said about Tom and Terry applies here also – Jim is a very good player too! This was the match I was worried about as the HH have Blindsight and nerf my Doogie Champs conceal. Suffice to say, Jim played great, my brain melted down, and I did not get any type of luck with the die rolls. We went 6 rounds and game ended with time / Jim at 200+ points. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.

Record 3-1

FIFTH MATCH (vs, Thomas Hamilton (DeadEnd106))

Opponents WB – Tiefling Captain, Drow Wizard, 2x Aspect of Lolth. MAP: Dragon Shrine.

Thomas H was one of the folks from Watertown. They did say when they got there that they were a little rusty play wise, but IMO the all played quite well! I hope these folks continue to come to future Syracuse events (ie WotDQ pre-release) as I look forward to gaming with them. Anyways, the Aspects of Lolth were a good idea, just a little undermanned against the DC’s. We moved, me in the middle, and hacked it out. I killed both AoL and came out on top after 4 rounds, 214-84.

Record 4-1

I dropped at the end of this round to let others qualify as I had previously qualified.

Congratulations again to one and all! A great time gaming with all of you!

Sirohk, it was great playing against you again. I look forward to many more battles for Western New York, so far it is Buffalo 2 Rochester 0. I just hope it is in the later rounds and not the first round, but I have to get better and win my early rounds to do that. I also want to commended you on your genorosity for dropping before the final four. See you in Syracuse on Saturday.

It was great seeing you again Sirohk (Matt) and this time we actually got a match against each other. I'm looking forward to Gen-Con and seeing everyone there.
