| I made a horrible mistake, and went 2-3 with: Gith Dragon Knight Centaur War Hulk Green Slaad
I knew a 3-figure band wouldn't be terribly competitive, but I thought the Slaad's unlimited random spells would be challenging and fun, much like the Beholder.
I was mistaken.
The problem is that even when he is in the right place at the right time with the right spell, it's a low-DC spell for minimal damage. I clocked in at 197 pts, and had a Mezzoloth - if I was going to go commanderless, I'd have done much better dropping the Slaad for the Daemon.
The GDK and CWH were awesome, especially since they were carrying the whole weight of the band. I was able to surround and kill a titan in almost every game (Solar dead, 2 rounds; Marilith dead, 2 rounds, etc.). I could also have chosen a commander and more activations, but it's always more fun to defy conventional warband building techniques and get away with itÂ

| I went 2-2. I had:
Vlaakith Bluespawn Stormlizard Karsite Fighter Elf Warmage Greenspawn sneak Fiendish Snake
Vlaakith was awesome (disintegrate, fireball, fearless, paralyzation). The stormlizard was really good except in the fourth round where he just got worked over and failed his morale save. The warmage was good but couldn't always get her into the right position for her cones. The karsite was ok - I expected him to do better. The sneak was a tile grabber and the snake was just for the activation.
The problem was I didn't have a good beater. My other rare was a howler which I didn't put in. The stormlizard was my biggest melee threat (besides Vlaakith). I think that it was the best army I could build with what I had, but it required a better player to win more with it. | | Champion of Gromph Baenre

| I went 3-2 with:
Centuar war hulk mezzoloth dwarf sniper orc wizard harmonium guard acheron goblin kobold monk
on the drow outpost map, I got my map 4 out of my 5 matches.
I was very dissapointed in the centaur war hulk he failed MC and routed in 3 of my matches and once in a mirror match my opponents centuar war hulk routed. With the low save and high speed he is likely to rout and, more than likely,if he does, your going to lose him.
on the other hand the Orc wizard and Dwarf sniper were both MVP's. I was using battering ram like crazy on drow out post and I killed 4 enemy with it,2 in one match delorous blow on the war hulk or mezzoloth isn't to shabby either. The dwarf sniper seting up on center victory area of drow outpost can take a first round explosive bolt shot on your opponent if he sets up in start B, my opponents did 3 times, and effect a goodly number of his warband right off the bat. Then with precise shot and coordinated shot he just hangs out on the far side of the pits and shoots into meele while your large beater blocks the pass.

| I got 2-1 (I had to leave early) with: Solar Shadowdancer Phoera Hero of Valhalla Free league Ranger Kobold Monk Fiendish Snake
The Solar's slaying Arrow was the deciding factor in both games I won. on my third and final game I lost more than half my warband in the first round to an Ice Devil and his ice storm spell. At that point I was easy pickings. | | "There are some things a dog just can't explain to a monkey." -Curious George TV show my son watches

| 4-0 with:
Gnome Trickster(possibly over-powered in sealed) Gnoll Barbarian(commander assassination) Kobold Monk (killed an owlbear!) Hammerer(killed a Red Dragon!) Hero of Vahalla(filler/tile grabber) Fiendish Snake(filler) Red Hand War Sorcerer(love it) Lord of Blades(so many abilities, it's scary)
Hammerer and Lord of Blades had some good synergy with the powerful charge(worked on pit fiend, gith knight). Turn 1 for me was always the same..Lord of blades casts augmented bane weapon on himself, then the gnome makes everyone invisible. There were a lot of negative comments about the gnome at the prerelease and I can see where in sealed it is crazy over-powered, but in constructed it should be fairly easy to deal with.
So my mini swag for the day was pretty nice. In my 5 boosters I got: Vlaakith The Lich Queen(drool....) Firegiant Forgepriest(another fire giant to the collection!) Howler(nice RP piece) Lord of Blades(gonna work on a band with him and Iron Golem) Storm Silverhand(me likey)

| I went 2-1 with the following:
Lord of Blades Centaur Warhulk Gnome Trickster Free League Ranger Greenspawn Sneak Greenspawn Sneak
199 pts 6 activations
My one loss was in my first match versus Storm, Ice Devil, Maug, and Soulknife Infiltrator (4 activation warband).Â
I beat a Firegiant Forgepriest warband and a Solar warband after my first round loss.Â
The Centaur Warhulk IMO is meh - decent damage but routs too easy. The Lord of Blades is awsome, and his Bane Weapon spell was very useful, but his one problems is his slow speed. On the other hand, everyone essentially brought the battle to him so he wqaqs always in the thick of things. FInally, the Gnome Trickster is pretty good. The Invisibility (and Conceal 11 because of it) saved a number of hit points for me.Â
I'll post more later in a Tournamnet Report in the Tournamnets section.Â
Cheers.

| I went 3-1 and took 2nd place in Holmes PA (losing to Chad Dragonlord in the last match) I drew the solar and Howler as rares, one thing i noticed wa a lack of cheap pieces to round out activations - i faced bands with 5, 8 nd 6 acts and I only had 7. I cant complain about finish, but I might have made 1 change to have a stronger band.
Solar 105 Orc Wizard 24 Shadow Dancer 28 Greenspawn sneak x 2 6+6 Soldier of Bytopia 12 Hero of Valhalla 11 192/8 I took mushroom cavern - I woulndt maximum los for the slaying arrow. The VA's for side A are well hidden and spread out. Not many people use this map so I figured it was a good choice - i won mp init all 4 matches
I had also pulled - copper dragon 32, maug 41, blood vol 18, skel reaper, fre league ranger, harmonium guard
I knew I had to play the solar, and the orc wizrd giving him crit 18-20 was a must 2 sneaks proved to be a key scoring and distracting method in hindsight, with so mnay low act bands I should have swapped the dancer28 + sneak or bytopia + 8 left over points for a Maug as a backup beater but it only mattered in last match
First match Devon Marilith, Kolyarut, Doomguard and filler (note to self - never stand in front of a marilith He won side and took A, but had no ranged attacks. He never wnet after either sneak so I got free 10pts per round, he also never moved a piece on to his bottom VA, though it didnt matter much. 1. I moved up from the botom, waiting for someone to come into range. He moved completely around the bottow VA's and set up to come after me. Dolorus on the solar of course 2. Game breaker - I shot his Kolyarut, and it failed the save 45 points for me adn his secodn beater gone. He based the solar with the marility and brought up doomguard for CFX 3. I stupidly took all 3 swings at the marility, casued damage but didnt rout it. He then hit 4 times with a crit, extra damage for the CFX and brought me down to something like 25 points! 4. I flew away next round. orc cast fire and blew something up. He moved up to base the solar. I think I shadow stepped to flank the marilith. 5. Thankfully won init, killed the marilith and went over 200pts. Lucky for me to win init, otherwise I would have lost playing poorly and kicking myself.
Round 2 Matt Barry - an excelletn player I have lost to before, but this time "I dont like my band" was written on his face as he placed his much maligned Lillend.
Elf Warmage, Doomguard, Archeron goblin, Lillend, Green sneak, Kob Monk, Dragonkith, Copper dragon (good synergy for a selaed event)
I won map and side and took A to spread out the sneaks.
1. We both moved up to center of our sides. I did crit his kobold with my sneaks acid, (monk routed) then shot his sneak with solar ("That was the slaying arrow - right" - NOT - hahah)
2. Won init, The assumed move came next as the solar positioned at top of the map and hit the lillend with slaying arrow - damn thing saved arg. Its annoying his ranged is only 10 damage. He moved aroudn the VA's at the bottom kept the dragon and kith neighboring. Using the smoke em if you got em method, I used the orc to base the goblin and fireburst - it failed save it either routed or i killed it quickly. He surrounded the orc and damaged it but he didnt rout. Warmage maximized her ring of blades., wizard passed Beguile ssave!
3. he hurts the wizrd, but with bad rolls doesnt kill it. I shaodw stepped to flank the doom guard(?) I flanked and kill the dragon kith with the solar, the doom guard went down soo also, but we all got fire coned for damage. Solar misses the dragon with his +12 and +7 atacks, very annoying but my only poor rolls of the match.
(i dont talk about the gnome and hero as the y perish easily in the cones)
Another cone and now I decide to run, the solar reaches the vicotry area at teh top, opposite the one in the corner to protect my sneak. I aolso wanted to be far enough away so that in case I routed I would have a rally chance. I left the dancer out alone, but she had passed MC. And passed beguile i think also
Down on points and time running out, Matt had to come after me. A sound lance whittled down the solar, if i had a mc i passed it, he based the solar with ring o blades, but I killed off the warmage and the either the lillend or dragon for enough points to go over 200.
The solar is quite vulnerable to fire and sonic damage, the warmage was a bad non beater to have to face.
So now 2-0 and feeling prety good. I had a 1/3 chance to face chad and thankfully didnt have to yet.
Kendall - (multiple beaters and not good matchup for my titan band) Bluespawn stormlizard Centaur war hulk Harmonium Guard mezzoloth copper dragons
same set up, me on A and spread out the sneaks dolorous blow on solar
1. I let him move, He advanced around the bottom,. I got off a frist round slaying arrow on his war hulk, hit but PASSED the save (arg!!) He put his dragon up tot he top VA and mexzzoloth came after the bottom one. One small mistake, he tucked himself into the corner at the top VA, so I had melee cover and his engagement attack missed by 1. I Shadow hopped across the board and set up behind his dragon. Hemoved up the war hulk and guard tothe otherside of the wall from my start area. the CWH took aout my hero. The orc wzard stepped up and fireburst, he failed the save, now he was a key 5hp from a MC.
3. Thankfully won init, the orc cast Ram, auto 5hp, and he fialed the MC. even with his speed he didnt reach the exit, but he was JUST barely out of command. At 58 points and a big beater I didnt think he would let him auto rout ooc. So I made a risky moved and put the solar behind the guard, he would have to take an aoo in order to try and rally the CWH. The risk wa that I now based the bluespwan and the mexxoloth stepped up to flank, poor rools and I took only one hit. The drawgon hit the dancer, but she shrugged it off. Ken moved the guard, I took my aoo and 20! for 50 damage and the kill, so he lost his commander, the CWH would rout off for another 58pts - he conceded - which surprised me. Considering that we were 15 minutes itot the match and he had my 105hp guy flanked b two other beaters, I would have played it out, but I took the win happily.
As expected Chad also won (he used a confused enemy bluepsawn to bolt most of the other team to near death)
So now at 3-0 with only the other 3-0 to face I knew I had second and three boosters in the bag. Chad is the best player I know and usually i mkae some sort of a blunder to amke the win easier, so I read his cards carefully. He had a great band.
Chad Dragonlord of aiur
I call it "Got Commanders? + plus LG Beaters" Storm Silverhand FreeLEague Ranger Doomguard Thundertusk Maug Kobold Monk
stacking up to hit and damage from both small commanders, who also became fearless under stormette was just nasty.
Standard set up. He won sdie but still took B. He protected his low save Tusk , so I shot the Maug on second round, but he PASSED THE SAVE (needed a 12, rolled a 13), he then based the solar with the Tusk and the MAug, moved up all commanders.
Then he won the critical init. everyone teed off on the solar, with CFX brough him down to 25hp, passed MC. AC 19 isnt that great and in constructed the solar really needs an AC buff) So I had to stand there. The Maug is fearless so I attacked the tusk. I missed, then critted, he passed MC (rats) then I killed him with the +7 attack, but that stupid deathburst, he hit on the nose and killed the solar. That was pretty much match, but I stuck around for a bit, damaged the domguard, but - oh she's fearless under stormette command so not even a MC there.
Only other think I could have done was move into the very far corner to take my arorw shot, but that was giving the mau cover, and i wanted every chance to hit him with the slay arow.
So 3-1 is my best result and I nver placed in a real tourney so good for me, bad for the wife!
Observation, the solar is cool and has "threat potential" I alsways used the arrow as soon as I had a main piece lined up. All 4 shots hit, but only 1 save failed (three other rolls were in their "teens" so odds were in my favor but dice were not.
At AC 19 and 105 hp with no fire immunity - the solar will not last long in toe to toe combat with a lot of other pieces, so you must pick your targets wisely, use screeners to hold off other beaters and in constructed buff him up.
Having a second beater bsides the Shadow dancer (+13/10magic 60hp) mght have been better against chad's band, i still ilky would have won the other matches, but still, no compalints about results.

| I went 5-0 with
Marilith Maug Shadowdancer Free League Ranger Gnome Trickster Greenspawn Sneak
Standard Operating Procedure was to cast Invisibility on my whole warband and simply wait until the time was right to move in the Marilith and Maug do deal lots of damage as the last two activations an a round then use initiative surge to win the next round to really finish off anything nasty. The Shadowdancer tried to assassinate a spellcaster, usually to little effect but 20 damage from her helped many times. Gnome Trickster was awesome and only ever cast the one spell. I played on my Dragonshrine every game and my Commander, Greenspawn and Gnome were my tile/resistance grabbers.
My Greenspawn did 30 damage to Orion72's Gith Dragon Knight (one crit and 2 flanking hits on 4 attacks!).

| I went 1-2 with:
Solar Elf Warmage Copper Dragon Ethereal Marauder Kobold Monk
Only the Copper Dragon was worth his money. It was way too scary sending a 40hp caster within 6 of anything, she is pretty much defenseless in BW limited, won't make that mistake again.
Surprisingly the Solar, also very bad in limited. He lacks any kind of defense other than 2 immunities. At AC19 and with 1 single arrow of slaying with conditions and two chances to miss (and if the opponent saves it's only 10 damage) - he sucks. He gets massive damage output, but 105pts is the entire warband. He will be much much better in constructed where he can get the proper buffs. | | Greyhaze's DDM Spoilers Champion of a Medium Dog & then a Darkenbeast , Raistlin Majere, Nightmare WDQ25/60, Warduke WD60/60, Anti-Champion of Guns, "Knight of Bugbears", and Joke Champion of Venger. | Shouldn't this be in the tournament thread? Or to be more accurte, shouldn't we be using the version of this thread on the tournament page?
SF Bay Area tourney was held at Game Kastle in Santa Clara. The Champion (John Wang - John05) ran a warband with a Horned Devil, Elf Dragonkith, Elf Warmage, Greenspawn Sneak and Harmonium Guard. I lost to him in the final round with my Pit Fiend, Dragonmark Heir of Deneith, Hammerer, Skeletal Reaper, Greenspawn Sneak and Mercykiller.
The big memories from the day:
* Losing my Pit Fiend to a slide from a gnome trickster that pushed the pit fiend into a pit... (the irony of losing a pit fiend in a pit was not lost on me...) - However, I managed to win the match after losing over half my warband on one die roll.
* Getting a critical hit on my Pit Fiend from the Horned Devil in the last round of the game during the opening salvo. It just went from bad to worse after that moment. Â
* Taking stock of my pulls from my boostyers and realizing that I had only 1 hitter - a 105 pit fiend. I had decent tech to support him, but I though I was more likely to have a bad day than a good.
I won two boosters from the tournament. The rares were a Howler and a Githyanki Knight.
My perspective on the day: Gnome Tricketer was generally less usefual than people expected. the Elf Warmage was more useful than people expected. Horned Devil is a solid piece in the right warband. | | Champion of Meepo _*_ Myztek on the Wizards Boards. _*_ (2206 DDM on 03/06/06) Please note: The use of the indicates an attempt at humor ... often a bad attempt. And it later fell to my Green Slaad's fireball... making it the ONLY casualty of Roid Rage Kermit all day. The Slaad was such a huge disappointment that I was a sad panda by the end of the day. Do the designers actually play this game?
Oh and by the way, aren't Dragons immune to critical hits?Â
Next time, Red Baron!
PS - That wasn't even the worst thing that happened to me. The worst was when TJ's Lillend beguiled my CWH into Power Charging my Dragon for 40 damage, then his Kolyarut with dolorous blow rolled crit after crit on it.

Solar Horned Devil Fiendish Snake Little Greenspawn Dude
Good band, if short on activations. The Horned Devil is a beast (and benefited nicely from the Solar's CE), although the single attack hurts it slightly. The Solar, for a 105 HP, 3 attacks for 25 damage piece, is pretty squishy. I lost him more than once.

It was a fun day, and there were a lot of skilled players present. I had never been to Cary, and I got to meet HidesFromHurricanes and Forkedmoon and his son. It was a nice group up there.

| lol, thats a great story, beguiled centaur war hulk powerfully charging your own guy.Â
i went 4-1 use: Solar Fire Giant Forgepriest Fiendish Snake x 2
with low activations i figured that it was best to try and eliminate my opponents acts as soon as i could, so i made enemy commanders number one target in every match. nobody was playing the lich queen, so the only strong commanders were the solar or the pit fiend, and both of those should always be number one target anyway, so i guess my stragety wasnt to creative or outragous. after i gave my opponents commander a good smackdown, it only took a swing or two from my forgepriest to make enemies think running away was suddenly a great idea. my one loss was when chance turned against me, and my opponent made his morale rolls and saved vs slaying arrow, and my fire giant had the runs. | | Champion of Manshoon of the Zhentarim addict of orcs, ogres, and anything that smashes

Oh yeah, we took not 1, but 2 pre-release events! My fellow Berkeleyan, John Wang (John05) took Santa Clara with his Horned Devil / Elf Kith & Warmage band! CONGRATULATIONS JOHN!
Myself, I went north to Sacramento and went 5-0 with the following warband:
- Vlaakith, Lich Queen - Githyanki on Red Dragon (Pulling both out of 2 boosters... What are the odds?) - Hero of Valhalla - Acheron Goblin - Kobold Monk
I could have made a warband with better potential damage output had I left out Vlaakith and gone with a few mid-level beaters, but.. how can you separate the two githyanki if you pull them both?
And, though I'm not very impressed with the cost of Vlaakith, I will say that her main benefit was how INTIMIDATING she is to opponents. I chose my map wisely to get off first round spells - Dungeon of Blood (probably the best decision I made all day). First round fireball was great for eliminating activations, and first round disintegrate was great fo putting the hurt on opposing hitters early.
The Dragon, also overcosted. But Mounted Melee attack and Flight 8 was a true MVP. Fly, hit something for 25 magic (yay Vlaakith's commander effect) and fly away. Dragonkiths never knew what hit them :-) As far as the wankers go, they were there to claim tile points, but one thing I will say, is that when Vlaakith does paralyze an opposing figure, the Hero of Valhalla hits for 30!
My one near loss was to a Horned Devil band that kept stunning my Dragon and basing Vlaakith. That was the only match that I lost Vlaakith and the game came down to the Horned Devil making his morale save (I had already taken out my opponents only commander). And then my opponent rolled a 3. Bad luck, but dice are a part of the game - we both had played well up to that point.
All in all, I was very impressed with my opponents from the Sacramento area and would like to thank them for running a smooth and enjoyable tournament! Again, to my fellow Berkeleyan, John05, congratulations again. GO GoB !!! | | Champion of all things Athasian "Don't sing it - Bring it!"

| 4-1 with a 3rd place finish out of 35.Â
My band:
Pit Fiend Green Slaad Harmonium Guard (mistake, should have been living flaming sphere) Hammerer Fiendish Snake Kobold Monk
The band I lost to was a Marilith/Maug band. I had it firmly under control at the beginning of round 4 with the Marilith routed, Maug at 20 hp remaining, my Green Slaad undamaged, my Pit Fiend with only 10 damage, and my Pit Fiend basing the Maug.Â
In round 4, needing a 4 or better, Pit Fiend missed twice against the 20 hp Maug. In round 5, needing a 4 or better, Pit Fiend missed twice against the 15 hp Maug again. Later in round 5, Harmonium Guard announces a charge to flank and kill the 10 hp Maug, rolls a hit which will take the juggernaut down--unfortunately, the AOO by the f(*&ing Orc Wizard is a natural 20 which puts down my Harmonium Guard. In round 6, needing a 4 or better, Pit Fiend twice again misses against the 10 hp Maug and is slain by said Maug later that round. In the mean time, Green Slaad misses twice on a full attack versus Marilith and then is diced into extraplanar guacamole. End of game.

| I went 3-2 with: Storm Silverhand Mezzoloth Dragonmark Heir of Denieth Shadow Dancer Gnome Trickster Greenspawn Sneak My basic strategy was to Cloudkill my opponent and then cast Invisibility Sphere and wait for my chance to strike at my opponents most vulnerable piece. I tried to use the Dragonmark’s bodyguard ability to help keep Storm or the Gnome alive. My warband could not do a large amount of damage without sneak attack so I had a problem with the constructs. My first opponent was PDK and his Solar/Fire Giant Forgepriest, I lost in about 5 minutes. My other loss was to Neidhart with his Kolyarut, Maug, and Green Slaad. | | My Have/Want List And My Trade References Successful Trades:61 | |

| Posted By greyhaze on 10/29/2006 7:20 AM I went 1-2 with:
Hey Greyhaze... were you at dueling grounds on Saturday? sounds like I played you...
My warband Vlaakith, the Lich Queen Medium Copper Dragon X2 Mezzoloth Greenspawn Sneak Acheron Goblin
If it was you thanks for the great game!
I learned alot and went 3-1 Lost to Mark on the last round.

| 4-2
I ran: Storm Silverhand Owlbear whiny, running beyotch Elf Warmage Dragonmark Heir Soulknife Infiltrator Greenspawn Sneak
I debated running my second Soulknife over the Owlbear as 45 fearless HP would maybe have been better than 65 non, but I wanted something with a little damage potential. I should have run with my first thought and another activation or two. The Owlbear went *squish* and run FAR too easily and Storm is rather squishy herself. With the bodyguard, the Elf Warmage was good, just lacking in protection. Plus, facing constructs and Vlaki twice, my sneak attacks didn't do much. Still, in hindsight, I did better than I thought I would when I first saw the pulls. | | Champion of Prit(Wemic vindication is here) Minneapolis/St. Paul area Completed trades: Aspect of Cheese (Love that moniker), Tickparasite, Elderthing, Lalato, Sodj, Grimoire, SmilinIrish, Zeb, RWarehall,Link, wikkawikkawa, Auramancer, Rommers, HK, Ivid5,Qillan_dvra, Puggins, Arcabius, Ironfist Boulderbender, Robby, Corim Danex, monster_slayer, DNDJUNKIE, Kelemvor, Krush, ckissee, Massawyrm, hockey fan, Wish, Uninspiring Lieutenant, vtloon x2, Vrecknidj, Darthpoke, WakeXX, AnarionZell, lycusmike, papabear5 and umpteen local trades with board members

| I went 2 and 2
Horned Devil Maug Harmonium Guard Free League Ranger Vallhalla Warrior Fiendish Snake Kobold Monk
I rarely play so this band would have done better in more skilled hands. I was too aggressive with MAUG and lost him a couple times. On the other hand I was a little TOO cautious with the Horned Devil and didn't exploit his mobility advantages (flight & Dimension door).
Shout out to the Valhalla Warrior which did a great job for a low cost unit.
Both commanders, the Harmonium Guard and the Free League Ranger performed well as a pair. I don't know how well they'll do as stand alone commanders.
Overall a great event with a really nice set of mini's.

| | Forked - its decent but theres no "titan" so I can see the concern depending on the rest of the field. I did well (6-0) without a titan - without anyone even as good as the Kolyarut IMO. I had a Maug tho.. but the red hand is such a good piece.. man, Im a big fan | | Minis... Serious Business Completed Trades (18 ) | Pending Trades (0) Ebay seller to Avoid –Fantasy_Quest_Dist

| I went 2-2 with.......
Maug Arcadian Hippo Mezzo Storm Greenspawn Mini Urthok x2
Trust me, going 2-2 is a personal triumph in the sealed format, as sad as that sounds. The highlight of my day was playing Glumag and having both his Horned Devil and Solar fail their morale saves and run off the board. Gave me a win I never should have gotten. | | WotC - making me wish more and more every day for a return to the TSR days. :( I fought the snark and the snark won. I'm baaaaaaaaaaack!

| | A fairly disappointing 2-2 with:
Gith Knight
Maug
Hammerer
Red Hand War Sorcerer
Greenspawn Sneak
Fiendish snake
The losses were vs a Solar band - I was in a great position in that match, until the Solar critted the gith knight TWICE with a 3rd hit in a single full attack - and vs. a marilith/ice devil band, which was just an ugly matchup from a DR/energy immunity standpoint.
I also never won a single map initiative all day, although I won most of the setup initiatives. | | Anson on WotC boards
