Ok I scanned the rule but I learn best by actully haveing the stuff in front of me. Now I am not try to down play this game it looks interesting but is it like some evil offspring of YU-GI-O (Is that how you spell it) and DDM. I got a strong card game vib from the rules and I am just wondering if I have the right idea.

Several people have likened it to Magic more then Yugioh., but I can see you point. It is not like DDM as a combat game at all.

Since Magic is such a big hit for WotC it would make sense they would create mini or card games that revolve around the same mechanics as Magic. DDM was different since they wanted to make game play more immersive.

I think of the chain of influence and design going in this direction:

Magic --> Hecatomb --> Dreamblade

Dreamblade pulled some of its design from DDM (minis) and SWTCG (use of 6 sided dice for attacks). Since they knew they have a hit with Magic and have shown how successful minis games can be why not combine the two?

But in Magic and Yugioh (and Duelmasters, etc), the cards don't "move" on the board.

Here there IS strategy with the movement of your pieces, and using Blade's to move in and out on engagements... That is a fundamental difference from a card game.

I need to stare at those rules some more myself though!

Well the MtG comparison was because it is not like DDM.

The abilities to move figures in and out of cells I think will be huge. Some of the specilas move your own piece while others move an opponent. I think there will be a ton of strategy with this game, not just attack and defend.

To me at least Dreamblade looks to be fillling the gap left by Mageknight. The adudience mainly seems to be younger players who are coming off of MtG or Yu-Gi-Oh. Not to bash any of these games as childish, just my observation and opinion.

So then, this could be likened to Anachronism with figures?

Yep. Very similar. Very basic game, played on a small grid. Anachronism uses cards and has positional capabilities (facing), this one does not. This one also has multiple moving parts where as Anachronism is largely 1 v 1.

One big difference would be the multiple figures that could be involved. It seems that DB will have mulitple figures to a side in play at any given time.

Good analogy though.

And you can't minimize the complexity that goes into Anachronism tournament play. A match is five individual games, etc. so you have to adjust and work that on the fly ... above and beyond playing the individual game.

I imagine these games will be more complex than a single Anachronism game but the complexity for the hour-long match will be relatively the same.

I don't think wizards is marketing to a "kiddie" market with this game.

1.) The theme is "horror" especially "psionic horror" very close to "Call of Cthulhu". Kids get money for games most of the time through their parents and it is hard to justify parents by "horror-style" games for their children in many cases. Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh were successes because they did not have overtly demonic or horrific elements to them, Pokemon looks like fuzzy wuzzy animals in many cases.

2.) Another theme of the game seems to be "high level" or "cuthroat" competitive play. This is evidenced by the focus on DCI Rating Points and CASH awards as incentives to get new players hooked into the game. Little kids generally are not as competitive as older players (exceptions exist obviously).

3.) The game has a chess like feel to it requiring patience. Pieces can generally only move 1 square per turn (unless they elect to skip a strike phase for a second shift phase). Combat will be important because the board can easily become clogged since pieces can't move past each other if they are engaged.

I like the look of the game, I have yet to play it but after reading the rules through twice I think it has a lot of potencial.

There are dozens of games that this could be 'likened' to ... but it is really a new game, not a knock off of other games.

I took the stats that we know and worked up a mock game with myself ... and I must say that the play is interesting. I don't feel like I'm playing DDM, chess, M:tG, Yu-gi-oh, Anachronism, Yahtzee or any other game I've seen. I feel like I'm playing a new game ...

I'm intrigued, although I doubt I'll be a hardcore player.

I was stuck by this immediately, even after only a cursory scan of the rules. Very similar to Magic in many ways.

Overall, I'm intrigued
